  1. Thanks for your support. I am trying to move this conversation to the general fourm category as suggested by some. I am more of a tactile guy than an online guy, but I am encouraged to document the project as suggested. my teenage son will have to do the e-stuff. Oh, by the way, the lnes are not imaginary, they are real. They are just a little thin at this point. They will thicken as time goes on. Can you imagine this project in 1000 years? My father used to send his students looking for benchmarks with a Brunton Compass. All they had to do was return with a rubbing for a grade. Since my brothers and I knew where all of the markers were, we were able to make quite a profit on the side. Lowell
  2. My math is appropriately corrected. thanks for the notations. Lowell
  3. You all have very interesting takes on my project. Yes, it may seem wierd to you. I can live with that. I did not spam anyone. I simply looked up your coordinates on my mapping program and replied to those who are close to the line. That took a lot of time and I did rile some of you. I sincerely appologize for that. I am very new to this list and seem to have posted in the wrong camp. I am working to fix that. By the way there are no less than five USFS benchmarks within five-hundred yards of that coordinate. Is this art? I can argue that it certainly is. I can also argue that it certainly isn't. Isn't that one of the beauties of art, and, as well, being an art academic? I picked the coordinated based on the location of a cairn that holds my father's ashes. Among other things my father taught surveying. I pulled a chain through the woods and ran a transit before GPS was even a gleam in the eye of a rocket scientist. I have a passion for maps and locations, as I assume most of you do. I just look at it a little differently, maybe because I was trained as an artist. Maybe because I think non-linear thinking is a good thing. Matisse said, "A line is a point out for a walk." My goal is to take that idea to a very real extreme. I will try not to bother those of you who are not interested. I will try to engage those of you who are with an interesting project. If you want to work with me on this one, send me a return address with your documentation and I will make you a mug. Are bribes acceptable on this list? W. Lowell Baker, Professor of Art, Ceramics
  4. I am a Professor of Art at The University of Alabama. During the summer of 2003 I began the largest piece of sculpture in the world. It will consist of two marked lines that circle the earth. The lines can be marked in any manner you choose from a large pile of rocks, as I have done in Colorado, to a simple scratch on the ground or a pile of grass clippings. These markers need not be permanent, but documentation is important. I would like the participants to photograph their markers and send me a copy of the image along with their name, the location of the marker and the date it was erected. Elevation would be nice too. I will include every submission into my file. If you have contacts around the world on or near the lines I would appreciate you sending them this message. Send me a return address and I will make you a mug. The East/west coordinate is 37o 22.386N. The north/south line is at 106o37.544W on this side of the world and 74o 22.38 on the other side of the world. Admittedly this is not the most important piece of art ever concieved, but I believe it is relevant, and i think it will be a lot of fum. on December 5, 2003, I have three concurrent exhibitions where I will introduce this piece. I will show photographs, maps, drawings, and paintings along with written descriptions of the work. As I present the work in other venues, I would like to include other people's markers. Let me know if you can help. W. Lowell Baker, Professor of Art, Ceramics The University of Alabama Wbaker@art.as.ua.edu
  5. Just to clarify my choice of starting coordinates: That location is marked. It is in southern Colorado next to a lake that is named after my mother (Lake Annella). The lake is now marked on all topo maps as lake Annella. I own this particular piece of land. There is a stone pile there that contains my father's ashes. Last summer I built five markers on the lines, as well as several other similar markers at points off the line. In the course of building my markers I found two other rather impressive markers. In the emerging tradition of post-modern art, I claimed them as my own. On December 5, I will have three exhibitions of this project work including drawings, maps photographic images and paintings of the markers I built and acquired last summer. Once again thanks for your interest. This should be fun. W. Lowell Baker Professor of Ceramics The University of Alabama
  6. You got it... Thanks for the reply and the graphics. I seem to have stepped on the toes of a few people on this list by contacting them directly. If that is the case I am truly sorry. I am just excited about this project and when I found your list I thought this group would be interested and capable of helping me. For those of you who have positively responded, thanks. If you can help me mark this thing in other countries or point me to people who might help I would also appreciate that too. Finally, this makes my GPS, Programs and Laptop deductable as art tools. Lowell
  7. I am working on a line project that will be teh largest sculpture in the world. One of my lines goes through southern Missouri. Are you or any of your members interested in helping me? Lowell Baker, professor of art
  8. By introduction, I am a professor of art at The University of Alabama. I started the largest sculpture in the world last summer and am looking for interested individuals to help me complete the project. I am marking two intersecting lines around the world. The lines may be marked by building any kind of a monument, from a stack of stones to a mark on the earth to a pile of rubbish. You then need to photograph the marker, note the location and date and your name. Once this is done you send that information to me and I add your work and name to the list of contributors to this project. The coordinates are 37degrees 22.386N and 106degrees 37.544W. Should you be interested in contacting me directly for more conversation I can be found at wbaker@art.as.ua.edu Thanks for your help and interst in my work. Lowel
