Well, I just got a Garmin nuvi 200w for Father's Day. It's my first GPSr as well as my first venture into the wonderful world of geocaching. So far, I couldn't ask for anything more! I absolutely LOVE it. It works great on the road, and the "Offroad" mode works great for caching. Add that to GSAK and "pilotsnipes" macro, and you can't go wrong! I just got a Garmin nuvi 200w last weekend for Father's Day, and I haven't downloaded my free map update yet. I figured I'd wait a couple of weeks to get a more recent map if they have one. Does anyone know if my current Favorites and Custom POIs will remain on my nuvi 200w if I download the updated map?

My wife and I were caching on a nearby college campus the other day, and a campus security guard rode up on a segway (is that how you spell that?) just as I had retrieved the cache! He says, "You guys lose something?" We had our 6 month old daughter with us, so I casually held up the rubbermaid container full of little toys and trinkets and said, "Yep, but we just found it! Thanks for asking!" He says, "Oh, she wouldn't be very happy if you lost that would she?" as he gave himself a little chuckle and rolled off! My wife and I just laughed, and then patted ourselves on the back for our "quick on our head-foot" thinking. That was our first geocaching experience, and boy are we hooked now!

I'm pretty sure it's there. My 200w does it, and I think the only difference between the two is the wide screen. You just have to hold it down for a good slow 3 or 4 count and then let go.

Nevermind about the alerts. I did what I should have done in the first place and did a quick topic search and got my answer. Glad to know it's gonna work! Oh, and one more question. I haven't downloaded my free map update from garmin yet. When I do that, will it erase my current caches and favorites or will everything transfer over? It's a nuvi 200w, by the way.

WOW! I am just starting out in geocaching. In fact, my wife and I nabbed our very first one yesterday! I just got everything downloaded, and holy cow, this is gonna make things so much more fun! This is gonna save lots and lots of paper and ink! Not to mention all the time it saves! Thank you soooooo much for this; can't wait to use it for the first time! BTW... GREAT tutorial. I am very new to the "gps phenomenon" and the tips you provided at the end were wonderful! I was wondering, though; will the proximity alerts work with my 200w?
