  1. that is why im glad that i live in an apartment. no grass to cut and more time for caching. although the astro-turf idea sounds pretty good to me
  2. I have also read of a pencil/pen referred to as a "scribbler"... are there any other "slang" terms heard? i have head of them being called writing utensils.
  3. To navigate to a point - first "mark" your current position - then "edit" the lat and log to where you want to go. Save that. Select the waypoint you saved above and the select goto. Use the compass screen to see the direction and the countdown of how far you need to go to get to the waypoint. No need to see both current and derstination coordinates. Unfortunately I do have a need as when I turn, the 'compass' doesn't and so it is forever pointing in the wrong direction. The compass is unfortunately, useless. The countdown is good, however! I want to be able to see the difference between where I am and where I need to be in long/lat coords... Thank you for your reply. are you talking about the compass of the arrow that shows you shat direction the cache is in.
  4. you probably just need to check your email that you have the geocaching name registered to and see if you have a validation email.
  5. Up here the courts and schools allow anything with a blade less than six inches and without a fixed blade. Seriously? A 14-year-old can carry a knife with a 5.5-inch folding blade to high school and use it to settle a pubescent hormone induced grudge? So what's with all these news stories about zero-tollerance schools expelling kids because their parents packed a dull butter knife in with their lunches? Any form of knife was against the rules back when I was in school, and that was in rural Mississippi 15 years ago. Lots of kids carried them (including me), but they were used as tools not weapons. Back to the topic at hand, I personally feel that there is nothing wrong with a knife in a cache under normal conditions. HOWEVER, the rules specifically state that knives are prohibitted, so I don't place knives in caches. And I remove any I find (trading when possible, but always removing). Decades ago, when I was in grade school and high school, we were allowed to carry knives. I though the limit was a four-inch blade, but I'm likely wrong. That's definitely not true here. Have one in your pocket? Expelled. Notice it in your pock and move it to your backpack, and they find it there? Expelled. Locker? Expelled. Car parked in the parking lot, locked, hidden in the glove box, and they know darn well you won't be going to your car all day? Expelled. No questions asked, period. Of course that's just around here. EDIT for punctuation EDIT AGAIN: OF course that only applies to students and faculty. I have no idea what the policy for visitors is, but I can't image they'd appreciate it if you brought one. Decades ago being the key word
  6. i wanna do this but i have to see if a certain cache is to close to it. i hope not.
  7. just pick it up and walk (with it in your hands) move it to the desired location and gt the coords on the caches homepage click on log visit you then have the option to update coordinates. i think but not sure if you move the cache over 528ft you have to list it a new cache and archive the old one. Im not sure about this maybe someone will clarify.
  8. Just tell him to walk it off. jk i second the Technu Extreme Scrub my roomate got PI and uses this stuff and it works like a charm. That is the only thing i can suggest since the stuff dosen't bother me.
  9. wow this one is only 27 miles from my house. I defiantly do it now. Thanks for the lead rixart.
  10. If the FTF had to replace the log then you might want to look into getting a new container.
  11. There is this thing called "the honeycomb project" or something like that, what it is is you make something theives want to take, in this case it is a tb, but when they take it it does something such as shock them. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-End...eybike-Project/ here is an instructable showing you how you can make one just modify it in to a tb.
  12. what is this FUNK smell like, mold, urine, poop, gunpowder? you could just put some potpourri in the bottom of it.
  13. Wouldn't 'Who's were they?' be more grammatically correct? Sorry, I couldn't resist. no, but "WHOSE they were" would be. I feel so ashamed. I'm the one who is always complaining about things like that, and I got it wrong. I know better:( OK, write 100 times... WHOSE were they? WHOSE were they? WHOSE were they? WHOSE were they? ... hahahahaha
  14. you would get a better response if you posted in the regional section of the forums.
  15. Good point. It was a long day and my thought process was smoldering last night. I think I've come up with a solution to the two-person requirement. Although one person could pull it off, the cache couldn't be set back up for the next cacher without help. We'll be going out tomorrow and placing it as well as getting all of the coordinates for the rest of the stages I had the opportunity to do a cache once where the final was a vertical pipe attached to a tree. You were told to look for tools and nearby you found a gallon jug. So.. you headed down to the marsh to fill it up and float the cache which was down in the bottom of the pipe. Easy for once person so far? Well, the owner drilled a bunch of holes in the pipe and by the time you got back from the marsh the pipe was drained again! A well prepared cacher would have tape with him or other things to plug up the holes but they had an answer for that too. Some of the holes were on the backside of the pipe and were not reachable and made a slow enough leak that you almost had to have a team to do it. The first time I poured water in that pipe and water stared spouting in different directions, I just howled. That is what i was think of for a cache that required 2 people.
  16. look at some of the cache pages in your area and look at the very first post, it should say something to the effect of Published, and have a blue icon by the persons name. This is probably the reviewer. My opinion would be that as long as its a public park and you acquire permission. then i don't see any harm placing it there.
  17. Nope, according to the specs you can't load anything into the H model; no detail maps or waypoints or routes. And it doesn't appear to have a basic basemap that the other eTrex models have. You can store up to 500 waypoints in the H but they have to be entered manually. The extra 40 bucks for the Venture HC seems like money well spent if you want to be able to load waypoints and detail maps from the PC. It comes with it's own USB cable in the box, but the one for my Canon camera works just as well. The Venture HC and above also have the ability to load geocaches directly from the computer and keeps them seperate from other waypoints. You can even select your own icons for them and mark them found when you are successful. The H doesn't know anything about geocaches. ...ken... You can load things into the H model, and they dont have to be entered manually. it has a serial connector, and hooks up to a serial port on your computer. it can hold 500 waypoints, 20 routes and save 10 tracks. The H model paired up with EasyGPS (or other GPS software) can do anything a beginner would need it to do. The H can accept waypoints from your computer. The H does let you select your icon and mark them found when you are successful The H does know a think about geocaching and then some.

    How?

you could put the info on the GPSr via a cable. You could use programs such as EasyGPS, GSAK, GPSBable, Cachemate.
  19. Look under benches/tables look under the skirt on lamppost. look in bushes. look under signs. look in trees.
  20. A suggestion would be the garmin: eTrex H eTrex Legend HCx You could get them off line for less then $150. Try ebay
  21. Hummmm "Caches that are buried. If a shovel, trowel or other "pointy" object is used to dig, whether in order to hide or to find the cache, then it is not appropriate. " The shovel is to place the outer tube, not the cache. Since the actual cache is concealed in the tube I believe it would be ok. No different then a magnetic concealed on a guardrail or a light pole skirt that was placed using a backhoe. i think people over analyze this "rule" way too much.
  22. That's three generations old and vastly overpriced. I'm a little fuzzy, but that data cable may be serial, if it is avoid like the plague. Any current unit uses USB, most modern PC's no longer have serial. For ~$250 you can get a Vista HCx bundle, brand new. Color, H chipset, x = microSD for GigaBytes of memory, Topo 2008 DVD. thats not true. "Most" desktops still come with serial connections. Dell is the only one i could find that doesn't come with one. i never have had any problems with my serial connection to my GPSr.
