  1. I'm all for capitalism, but I don't see the obvious brand bias and special "Garmin brand only" features as being a good thing, so much for "open" caching. One of the great things about geocaching.com is the neutrality and the fact that regardless of what equipment you have there's a way to get into it. I have nothing against Garmin, in fact being a local company is one of the reasons I have all Garmin unit and I know several employees whom I like to support. In the end I hope the opening of the second site doesn't divide or dilute the fanbase. roog
  2. Why on earth would Garmin start up a geocaching website that duplicates the well established one here? Maybe I should go ask them as Garmin World HQ is literally about 5 minutes from my house. OpenCaching.com Announcement shaking my head, roog
  3. Just a heads up for those who may have done the same. I broke my suction cup mount by dropping it and stepping on it. I broke the plastic around the pivot point and after seeing that the suction cup mount is $54 (!) I was a little sick because I use it everyday. I perused through GPScity's website and found this mount for a C5xx and figured for $11 I would give it a shot and it worked perfectly! The only difference is that the ball on the end of the arm doesn't pivot, but it still allows you to rotate the cradle up or down as I need it. A great replacement for $11, a full $43 cheaper than the OEM replacement. Granted the OEM replacement includes a cradle, power cable with integrated speaker, but I didn't need all that stuff as I just broke the suction cup mount. $11 replacement: http://www.gpscity.com/spc5sucmnt $54 OEM replacement: http://www.gpscity.com/item-garmin-quest-s...uest2sucmnt.htm xrider
  4. That's exactly right, Palm sells a USB to Serial converter, I got one for my Palm V and it works great with my Mac. I would guess that for a PC just about any of the USB to Serial converters would work as long as they have the right drivers for your version of Windows, for my Mac I went the Palm route to be sure it would work correctly as they can be a bit pickier. xrider
  5. I started caching and would like to do more. I started right before my son was born and when he gets old enough to understand I will be doing more. Most of my time now is spent taking care of my 8 month old daughter and working. I have an eTrex Vista and Quest and live in eastern Kansas. I am a Mac user and also am a fan of Honda motorcycles, currently riding a VTX 1300, GPS has made that more enjoyable as well. roog
  6. It depends on the unit, if it's a StreetPilot that only works with 12v power, then you will need to get a handheld unit. If yours can run on it's own battery power then you can use that, you just need to look up how to input coordinates for your specific model. I use a Quest and an eTrex Vista for geocaching. roog
  7. Yea, hard to believe! Although I did a search and didn't see anything on this specific topic. Enjoy, roog
  8. I have to admit that $129 is near the price of another GPSr though, so you may be better off just purchasing a new one if you like. I just wanted to let people know what the process was like and how they did. roog
  9. I bought a used eTrex Vista from another motorcyclist in 2003. I use it quite a bit on my motorcycle and it has taken quite a bit of abuse. My screen had about 6 dead lines, one of the battery springs was completely flat from a bad battery, the click-stick would stop working intermittently, and the shell had a lot of wear from being in a RAM Mount. I also found out that the previous owner wired it directly to his Gold Wing's electrical system, completely bypassing the voltage step-down that the 12v adapter has built in. Well, I mentioned these things to my friend who works at Garmin (I live about 10 miles from their world HQ) and he took it in to do the $129 refurbishment for out of warranty GPSrs. They replaced the screen, battery contacts, click-stick and the entire outer shell. They also replaced one of the main boards due to it getting 12v from the previous owner, evidently it didn't pass their internal testing. I got it back after 4 business days and it looks like a brand new unit. I had the older very blue colored backlight and this one now has the newer blue-gray backlighting. The shell has no marks and all the buttons and click-stick actions are crisp and solid. If you are considering sending in a dead unit or fixing up your out of warranty GPSr, they do a great job. roog
  10. I've always had Garmins, a 2720 that I gave to my Dad, this Quest and eTrex. It helps to have a Garmin employee as a friend (I live 10 miles from their global HQ). roog
  11. I love RAM Mounts for my stuff, whether it be on my motorcycle, in my Kenworth at work or in my Explorer or Altima at home. There are tons of options and a Quest specific mount: http://www.gpscity.com/item-ram-mount-garm.../ramholga15.htm All you need to do is find the right parts to fit your Tahoe. For my Explorer I used this (to the right of the heater controls): http://www.panavise.com/nf/comm/indash/ind...198301965521310 They will have one for your Tahoe as well, http://www.panavise.com roog I will try to get a picture of my setup, once it gets home from whatever my wife is doing with it.
  12. This isn't a Micro but a good price on a regular SD card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820134029 roog
  13. Thanks for the tips folks, I didn't know about the local reviewer since I am still kinda new so I will go that route and include this discussion along with it. Thanks again, Wayne
  14. This would be the exact reason I'm here. My goal is not to convert or gain church members, pass out literature or get donations. I just would like to combine two things I am interested in, thinking that others may find this interesting or challenging instead of just posting the coordinates. Thanks for the feedback, roog
  15. Yes, they will all be versed. For example, I would have something like this as part of the puzzle. Coordinates are N ab° cd.efg W 0hi° jk.lmn Question: The letter m = The LORD made the earth in how many days? With a little research on BibleGateway.com (or if they just know the answer) it will point to Exodus 20:11 where the answer is: For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Answer: 6 Plug in the number 6 for m and it yields: N ab° cd.efg W 0hi° jk.l6n Then continue on until all the numbers are plugged in for the final coords. I will be working with my pastor to ensure that the questions will be unique and won't be easily mistaken. roog
  16. Good point, I was planning on giving a link to the BibleGateway online and let people know I would be using that website and specifically the NIV translation. The swag I have planned isn't advertising or specifically religious, just little toys that have a meaning to myself. Thanks for the input, Wayne
  17. I think this is the place to ask this, I would like to setup a puzzle cache that would require people to reference the Bible to find the coordinates. Basically looking up numbers in the text. Would this be prohibited at all? It's not meant to to gain or recruit members to a church or anything like that. Thanks, Wayne
  18. That's awesome, I live about 10 miles from the Garmin World HQ and have a friend who works there in the aviation department, he didn't know much about the handhelds. roog
  19. I've always wondered how high the Max Speed reading would go, I got this on a United flight from Dulles to Kansas City. roog
  20. I asked the flight attendent in a flight from Washington/Dulles to Kansas City International and she told me it was ok, was a United flight. She was very interested in finding out how fast we were going. Guess it just depends on the flight crew. roog

  23. I have a friend I ride motorcycles with who is an engineer at Garmin (although in the avionics department). He says there are no current plans that he knows of to include Macs. 24. I do the same thing on my eTrex Vista. A PDA protector covers my whole screen and I can use the extras for my PDA.. Enjoy, Roog
