  1. While it is tempting at times I do not cut and paste - even on a power trail or geo art. I figure that if the CO took the time and effort to place a container, obtain coordinates, submit the cache and then maintain it the least I can do not duplicate one of my other logs or do a TFTC. Of course, it takes a bit longer but I am tempted to notify anyone who simply posts a smiley emoticon or the equally lame TFTC to one of my caches that they will have their log deleted. (I haven't actually done this but it has crossed my mind.) I try not to place lame caches and I would be just as happy if I didn't earn lame logs.
  2. Bridge Out (GC28N8G) seems to fit the criteria. It is a 5/5 and requires rappelling but not necessarily climbing gear.
  3. Thanks for all of your thoughts. Of course, I especially appreciated the positive comments. ManvillePH I would like to address some of the issues which were mentioned. This could be done completely through e-mail until the age issue was resolved. Simple advice such as not hiding a micro in the woods as a first hide would be immeasureably helpful. Also, the mentor could check the accuracy of the coordinates and the appropriateness of the hide after the cache was placed without the presence of the cache owner. I don't know, but I think that prevention of a bad cache is preferable for the newbie's reputation than rehabilitation. And I think that a mentor relationship would be more likely to foster a good caching relationship than an e-mail from a stranger recommending changes. Not sure if you are making reference to my idea but since it would be totally voluntary with several benefits to both the newcomer as well as the mentor I'm not sure how rules and regs are involved. If I knew who the mentor was then I would have a good idea whether I would be expecting a quality cache or just another grc. A new cacher would have the benefit of being introduced into the community by a highly regarded cacher. This already happens but to a lesser extent.
  4. It's true that some people who are new to the game have placed very good caches (and I've even favorited a few of them). I know that when I started caching I was worried that my coordinates might not be sufficiently accurate. I also wanted to place a quality cache so it was not until some seasoned and well respected cachers in my area provided encouragement and offered to check my coordinates that I finally designed my first placement. Last weekend I kayaked 90 minutes for an unfound micro and it remains unfound since I DNF'ed. On my way back I had some time to think about this very issue since the cache was the first to be placed by a someone who has logged a total of 5 finds. My idea is for Groundspeak to implement a voluntary mentor/protégé system. An experienced cacher whose placements had earned a specified number of favorite points would make themselves available to help with the new cacher's first few hides. Participation could be encouraged by creating a special badge perhaps The Good Cachekeeping Seal of Approval for the protégé's profile indicating the number of caches they had placed with the guidance of the mentor. The mentor could receive recognition in many ways, either by a badge, a new category on the statistics page, and/or, the addition of their caching identity to the name of the cache they mentored. I know I would appreciate the latter since it would give an indication what type of cache it is most likely to be e.g. suitable to the location, accurate coordinates, appropriate container etc.
  5. I normally cache with either a PN-40 or a Garmin GPSMap 62sc but when I wanted to try Wherigos I paired the BadElf with my iPod Touch. For general caching it's mediocre but does the job, for Wherigos it isn't very good. In my local area the compass doesn't seem to work so it is basically hit or miss about which direction to move to get into a zone. And, it has either locked up or can't find satellites when I am out of the country. I have contacted tech support and nothing has improved the situation. If you have the correct maps loaded or, a WiFi connection it does a reasonable job of tracking your route.
  6. The code is GC27933. Thanks for your prompt response.
  7. I noticed that the background image was missing from one of my cache pages although it had been there previously. I checked my Photobucket account and the jpg of the image is still there. I tried editing the listing by re-pasting the URL from Photobucket and that didn't bring it back either. Any ideas how to remedy the situation?
  8. There are a lot of almost new Garmin 60CSX GPSrs for sale on this forum. I don't have one of these but I wish I had chosen it when I first started caching. I've noticed that most of the successful cachers that I know have owned one of them at some point, and, even if they have moved on they retain it as a backup. I've borrowed one and found it to be rock solid and consistently accurate.
  9. This didn't happen to me but it did happen yesterday to someone looking for one of my more difficult caches. They had been searching for a difficulty 4 in an urban environment and when they had given up and were heading to their car a worker from a restaurant that was several hundred feet away yet within view ran out crossed the street and directed them where to look. The cache seems to provide a bit of entertainment for some benevolent muggles. I'm planning on introducing myself and seeing if they would like to learn more about the game.
  10. Joining those who haven't been able to access the WAAS even after firmware update, NVM reset, and an overnight in a south facing window. Immediately after the firmware update and NVM reset there was a space for one of the WAAS birds on the display but no signal strength. This morning before replacing the batteries I might have seen some weak blue signal bars but since then there hasn't been any WAAS activity and the satellite is missing from the display.
  11. Caveat: My Nuvi can do a lot of things, but it isn't very good for geocaching. (That's why I just got a PN-40). My Nuvi can display photos, serve as an mp3 player, translate common phrases into different languages, and route me to the vicinity of the cache, BUT it lacks a compass. And the batteries are no where near what was advertised. On a bicycle trip I'd use it to alert me to caches in the vicinity and as soon as I started searching the batteries would be dead. Count on about 2 hours maximum in warm weather. I've been carrying a separate compass in my geobag. Since you are a premium member it seems as if you are all set for a good hand held but I just wanted to give you the benefit of my experience.
  12. When trying to unzip the file GSAK would launch and then I was in a deadend. I think I'm getting somewhere by launching EasyGPS and unzipping that way. Thanks for the input. I really want to be able to use the full functionality of the PN-40 before too long.
  13. Very cool. A Christmas present to go with my Christmas present.
  14. Absolutely. Click on the "Where To" screen then click on the "down" arrow on the bottom right (just under the Cities tab). Until recently I used a Nuvi for Geocaching. Even managed five FTFs!
  15. Thanks for all your prompt and really helpful replies. Maingray, thanks for pointing me toward the macro. Embra, I haven't had a chance to take a look at the step by step process but I certainly will. And Benjamin921 your translation of Delorme's reply was greatl. You guys are the best. Thanks again.
  16. Thanks for the pointer. Why couldn't I think of that myself?
  17. Mine just arrived last night. Might you be able to tell me how you were able to load your pocket queries using GSAK? Before I ordered I was told by the DeLorme pre-sales person that GSAK wouldn't work on the PN-40. I have been trying to save individual caches as .loc files but since I use GSAK for another GPS it is the default. When I save a cache it goes into a GSAK folder and Topo USA doesn't recognize the file. I would really enjoy being able to use the functionality of GSAK. Thanks for any help

  19. Ah. I thought cache maggots were people who steal geocaches. I gotta update my geodictionary. People who steal geocoins and Travel Bugs are Geocoin/Travel Bug Thieves? Is that what you want to call them? So respectful of a thief to call them what they are. Why not call them geovultures, or something derogatory? I have names for them, but I don't think its appropriate for these forums. Thieves are lazy by nature, I will not relocate a coin or bug unless it has at least 3/3 rating. Seems to work in my area lately, and I tend to drop them at PMOC's Unfortunately that only works once. and when the next person picks it up, its usually dropped in an easier cache. I usually feel responsible for a coin or a TB until the next person picks it up. I rarely remove anything from a cache unless it is a tb or a gc. I take their journey's very seriously and never leave them in a cache which might be dangerous for them no matter how appropriate it might have seemed to their goal. Therefore, someone may think I will not be setting their trackable free in a timely manner but I want it to be safe and headed in the right direction when I release it.
  20. As a "cousin from the Colonies" and fairly new new geocaching I must say that those in the UK have elevated multi's to a high art form. While visiting Lymington last month I very much enjoyed finding the clues to the coordinates for the Lymington Park Multi (GC1C0HB) however, when it came to finding the cache where I planned to leave a tb I had no joy. There was a ferry to catch so reluctantly I abandoned my quest. Since returning home I have pondered what I might have missed or misread. Since I don't know when I'll be back in Lymington I wondered if any of you who are successful with this one could send me a photo of the location of the final cache. Enjoy your weekend! I wish I were there. tandemstoker
