  1. Wow, that's a hike and a half! I'm interested but not quite sure when. Anyone for next Sunday? I'll hit Topo! tonight and start some of the beta/map work.
  2. Thats something I've wondered about, just how easy it is to get PO from the bare stems. I learned way back in scouts to avoid bare stems but I've never heard of a confirmed case. Kinda confirmed now but not 100% Hey, hope you feel better Tom!
  3. Cross post from the event thread, SD Tunnel Rat meeting is now scheduled. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...0entry1923548
  4. The official San Diego Tunnel Rat meeting is now called to order! Saturday December 31st, 8am 32°56.262, 117°6.080 also know as Scripps Poway Pky @ Scripps Summit Dr Adjacent Carl's Jr for your dining "pleasure" if you missed breakfast. PassingWind and I will be exploring one of the longest tunnels in north San Diego, possibly 1-2 miles, and finding a good spot for a cache placement. The pic is from the tunnel entrance that I scouted with my kids...girls 13 & 10 years old! You can't be scared if a 10 year old girl will go, can you? Bring 2 light sources (head lamps are great!), snacks or a lunch, shoes that you don't mind getting wet, holy water, garlic and anything else that wards off the spooks. I'm bring my camera tripod this time to get some cool pictures, un-blurry pictures. You can email me for more info or for my cell number.
  5. Eh, don't sweat it. Many of these hiders have several hundred caches under their belts, if not more. Start off slow with the 1 and 2 rated caches then work your way up. Nothing is more frustrating that DNF over and over on a 4 star difficulty and not realizing it.
  6. Nice! The lake forces you to view the cache site from a limited angel and over head is always the 2nd place they look. Simple yet effective.
  7. 'nother dull one. My first name Dan morphed into Danno, ala Hawaii Five-O. There are a few too many Dannos on-line so a slight mod got me to Dan-oh. Book 'em!
  8. Cruel caches? I just had a flash...a cache based off a Steve Martin story... GCS&M 'The Cruel Cache' Interesting... Oh, you must have one more pair. . . . No, not one more . . . . Well, we have the cruel shoes, but no one would want to try . . . Yes, let me see the cruel shoes!
  9. Anyone interested in some tunnel and drain exploration? From PassingWind and DJollyMon's most recent offerings, its looking like the SD crowd likes tunnels, or at least tolerates 'em. I've looked into the SD Urban Exploring group but so far its lacking. There are lotsa underground spaces to explore and even spots for some new cache placements. Who's in? (email might be best if this is too OT)
  10. I happen to know about a really cool 16 WP multi cache. It even has the option of doing MORE waypoints! Here's my .02, pretty much in line with the group. - walkable stages work great unless the theme or "epic-ness" of the cache requires other - after approximately 3 WPs, you better be holding their attention with something fun or something brutally hard for the masochists in the grou[ - for the love of Pete, don't use the WP formula of "multiply the number of ants by the year the Paris Hilton died and subtract out the number of flag poles acrss the street" formula! - if you do use the "multiply the number of ants..." formula, make sure the cacher knows 100% that they've found the next stage. They might be counting tthe wrong grouping of trash bags. or flag poles. - have durable WP tags that aren't going to blow away or get wet with the first rain Hey, I'm a celebrity and know about this stuff. Just ask PodCacher.com, show #28! *Cough* Gotta go to the book signing next...
  11. What! There's no Santa! You didn't hear the news? Its was back in 2000...
  12. Doing my best Sienfield low-talker impersonation, iTrax & FoxTail interviewed me for this weeks PodCacher Podcast. I've been promoted as a "San Diego caching legend". Who, me? If you haven't ever listened to one of their podcasts, download any one of their weekly shows. They've cover topics from ranging from tools of the trade, hints and tips to their caching proposal. Sometimes I'll listen at my desktop, on my MP3 player or even burn a CD. Its a very cool show, excluding this week
  13. Notice that my profile invites anyone from OUTSIDE the area to email me for more of those pictures. I'm anxious to spread the good word about camo and being creative. The only hook is if you live in San Diego, ya gotta find 'em first! *PLUG-PLUG* If you don't already, tune into Sonny & Sandy's PodCacher Podcasts. Its something great to listen to on the drive and always interesting. As an added bonus, very soon they'll be interviewing a locally renowned camouflage expert! hope I don't sound like a dork!
  14. I think all the "not FTF" log entries say it all. Silly idea.
  15. Since I switched to trekking poles, I've wondered about a tripod set up as well. I have this small tripod that only weighs 2ozs that I can set up several different way. I suppose with one other trekking pole and the built in velcro strap, I can build my own full size tripod. Someday when I upgrade to a DSLR (yeah, when) I'll need the larger tripod, a whopping 4ozs. REI ultrapod
  16. I have a hanging bird feeder cache locally and struggled with an acceptable mounting. I settled on large automotive hose clamps that go around each branch. It was more work than a lag bolt but it didn't penetrate the bark.
  17. - What makes you think she's a witch? Well, she turned me into a newt. - A newt? ...I got better. - Burn her anyway!
  18. So whatcha say San Diegans, how bout we take him up on it? No, no! Not that! Put together your best list in bookmark form and we'll take the good Doctor caching, San Diego style. And if Dr Haz would let us know his prefered flavor of caches, we'll taylor the list to a T. Is it mega-hike, 4WD, ultra-camo, bizzare placement, themed story of mind bending multi? We got 'em all! Oh, and how far do you want to travel from the La Mesa area?
  19. I don't think it was about the right path or not having enough time. I believe the issue was not being prepared. Every hiker should have the Ten Essentials and then some more, when hiking. I have a 6"x4"x3" zipper pouch with everthing except water and food in it. I always have that in my pack. If I get stuck outside after dark, the headlamp is great. Should it get even worse, I have a mylar blanket and trash bag to bivuac, matches if I really needed a fire and signaling tools to help call for help. A prepared hiker need to be mentally prepared and have the supplies to spend a night out. Over the top? Not if you want to be safe.
  20. I did some recon on 'Past the Point' today but didn't have any time to get it. I have a labeled Google satelite map with the info if someone needs it. Maybe this weekend I get the head lamp going.
  21. Good idea PW. Here are my favorites: Below ground in SD San Diego must-do caches Great caches
  22. I think its important that an individual is responsible to call the "authorities" should you not return. While an on-line group helping out is a nice idea, its not certain enough. Likewise, telling someone where you'll be isn't enough if your anchor won't call. In my story, my wife delayed a hour or so on calling but she DID make the call. Re stalkers: I don't subscribe to the axe-muderer-on-the-internet theory myself. I've met plenty 'o nice folks that haven't chopped me up...yet. Maybe I'll take a look at lostguy's profile just to be safe...
  23. That sounds like a bad habit to get over. Take a look at my adventure over the summer here in the main forums. If we hadn't told anyone where we were or have the 10 essentials, we could have had an even worse time. Even a voice mail with the basic info is enough, provided the recipient knows what to do if you don't return at the appointed time. You may have been out for 30 minutes so my doom-n-gloom isn't warranted. But hey, you should see the survival gear I take when I go out for a quart of milk!
  24. I use PhotoRescue for card data recovery. Probably more important is to re-format the card on a regular basis using the function in your camera, not on your PC! The recovery programs are wonderful and are something that should be in your digital photo toolbox.
  25. Thats easy! Its at bb1d625f-899b-4aec-9aaf-a07e3d02dae5 Dang! Why don't you people ever name your image files right?!
