  1. Thanks, Red90. First, I'm going to try putting thin foam in there, but, if not, I'll want to try one of the companies you mention. I actually did try googling, but I don't think I knew the right search terms. I'm assuming that, if I google repair Garmin [my location], I can find such a company. I do appreciate your help.
  2. Thanks! This is an excellent suggestion, which I will implement forthwith.
  3. This time, I have found that the tiny metal piece that is supposed to hold my sim card in place won't stay put, so the device can't read the maps that I put on the card and I can't transfer maps from the computer because Basecamp says that I have no storage in the unit itself (not what I thought was the case, but I am a Luddite). Anyway, does anyone know how to fix this or where I might go to avoid having to send it in to Garmin? I am on a brief vacation and was hoping to get in some geocaching and also locate restaurants with the same lovely device. I do love my GyPSy, but Garmin is slow and frustrating, and I have gotten far more help from you guys. Thanks again, Cacheret
  4. Thanks so much, TJ! You're a life saver (or at least a trip saver). There is nothing special about the cable. If my memory serves me correctly, the 60CSx has a mini USB connector, so get a USB Type A (standard PC connector) to USB Mini cable. Like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dynex-3-mini-b-usb-cable/3182249.p?id=1218382959120&skuId=3182249&st=usb%20mini%20cable&cp=1&lp=1
  5. Does anyone know which usb cords other than the Garmin will work with the 60CSx? I've lost mine and need one asap, if possible. Ideally, I'd like to be able to get it locally at Best Buy, Fry or somewhere like that. Thanks either way! Cacheret
  6. Thanks, AZ. Sadly, I don't get a dialogue box of the type you describe. I just get a "save file" choice. What I am trying to do is to send to my GPS, not download to my computer, which is probably why I don't get the download dialogue box. I did the .gpx search and did not find the PQ but did find that, in an earlier try to send an individual cache to my gps, I downloaded it to BaseCamp. This did not come about because of a dialogue box. It would appear that I can download my PQ to my desktop (or wherever) and then find a way to transfer it to RoadMap (which is what I use instead of Base Camp) and then transfer from there to my gps.
  7. Thanks, Chuck. What I get instead of this :message that file GCXXXXXX.gpx was successfully written. An icon should show up on the map where the cache was located is a message that gives a location on my computer. According to this, the plugin should be in my library in internet plugins, but it isn't there. Apparently, the cache is being sent to a file associated with my plugin. Oh well. So, I went to the page you gave for the Garmin archives, and my computer asks what I want to use to open the plugin. The default is TextEdit, which, of course, isn't the right one, but what is? I'm sorry to be so ignorant! Thanks again! If the Garmin communicator plugin doesn't find your GPSr then try getting the latest update to the plugin from Garmin. To eliminate the USB cable as a failure point put the GPSr in mass storage mode (Setup, Interface, USB Mass Storage). If windows explorer can see the file system on the GPSr then the cable is good. Other possible culprits are anti-virus software, firewall, or browser security features. From GC.com, clicking on "Send to GPS" should cause a window to pop-up that has a Garmin tab, that has a "Write" button. Clicking on the "Write" button should produce a message that file GCXXXXXX.gpx was successfully written. An icon should show up on the map where the cache was located. I don't follow your statement "follow the address that's given for the plug in." The plugin should be installed on the computer. I have heard there is a bug in the mac version of the 4.0.1 plugin that renders it useless. If you are using a mac then install the 3.0.1 version of the plug-in. An archive of past issues of Garmin software/firmware is available at Garmin Utilities
  8. Earlier, I posted a query because I can't send caches to my GPS (Garmin 60CSx). This is especially frustrating because, after a hiatus, I'm back to caching, and features that worked intuitively and easily in my previous caching days now seem impossible. Anyway, I then read more posts on sending caches that weren't just for my Garmin, and it seemed that everyone could solve any problem like this by doing a pocket query. So I did one. But there wasn't an option to send the PQ to my GPS, so I downloaded it. The problem is that there's no indication of where the download went! I have a Mac, so I tried searching in Spotlight, on the assumption that it would have downloaded somewhere to my computer (of course, I have no idea of how to move it from there to the GPS). I'm about ready to quit--or just cry. Please help!
  9. OK, I have read all these posts. I was a premium member for a while, then stopped caching for a while, and now I can't make the send to GPS work at all (it worked perfectly with the same GPS, Garmin 60CSx, before). The Garmin tab locates my device, and then I hit "Write," which is the only option that could possibly mean "send to my GPS." and then it says it sent it to the plugin. When I follow the address that's given for the plug in, the plugin doesn't show up. I am baffled. I loved this site before, and I can't understand why, with the same GPS, the same site, and the same human (me), it won't work now. Please help! 10. In a recent break-in, I lost my beloved GyPSy and now wish to replace her. I liked the 60CSx, so I want another. I've done some research and found that the lowest new price is around $285, while there are some refurbished ones for about $50 less. These say that they are like new and that they have a one-year guarantee from Garmin. Has anyone bought a refurbished GPS? Have any other advice? My sense is that the newer/fancier models are having more problems than the 60SCx, but does anyone recommend one of those? Thanks, Cacheret PS I need a Garmin because I had just broken down and bought the City Nav. maps, which were not stolen.
  11. Dear Peruvians, I'm coming to Peru next week and would like to do some caching. Are there any cheap--or free--maps that I can download? I'm only going to be there two weeks (Lima, Cuzco, Macchu Picchu, and Erica Lodge (rain forest), and, while I'd love to do some caching, I don't want to buy the expensive Garmin maps. If not, do you have any advice about what we should (or should not) do in general? Cacheret
  12. Do you have some kind of Mapsource Program already? Or do you need to download that too? Assuming you have it, you can just go in to mapsource, and select Ibycus USA from the drop down in the top left hand corner. The only thing I did was install the Trip and Waypoint Manager and bought a 4gb microSDHC card, which I put in the GPS. What is a Mapsource Program and how would I know if I have it or not? Trip and Waypoint Manager is exactly what you need, although I might install the latest mapsource update if I were you (just cuz). You can download it from Garmin's site. http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6137.exe Just load up "Trip and Waypoint Manager" and select "Ibycus USA" from the dropdown list in the top left hand corner of the screen. Then using the "Map Select Tool" (hit m), highlight the area you want to send to the GPS, then hit the "Send to Device" button. Dale I think I'm almost done. I highlighted all of Florida which shows all the counties as different maps. From that list I select the map of the county I want and keep zooming in until I get the streets I'm looking for. Is that correct? Now to get maps of another state, I open up Ibycus USA from the drop down box in the upper left corner and highlight another area, send to device and that will give me another set of maps for that state. Is that right? Thank you, thank you Dale! You have been most patient with this novice. Thanks to Dale, Dan and coggins, I've got the Ibycus maps on my Mac. But people keep talking about adding states to their GPSs as though you can see and select states as a whole. Is this true? My maps don't show state boundaries or even major cities (like Chicago); rather they show counties, with numerous small tiles, and I have tended to zoom out and do things like follow interstates until they connect in a place I recognize or use other geographical features (for example, I just went to Florida, and I went to the bottom of that state and selected tiles upward until I had roughly the whole state--though I think I included some of Alabama and Georgia). Is there a simple way to see state boundaries and, maybe, to select the whole state? Thanks, Karen
  13. Dale, Dan, and coggins, I really do appreciate all the work that you have done, making maps, making Mac versions, and giving advice and comfort. Karen
  14. Click on a tile to select it, click on it again to unselect it. On the bottom of the page is a memory meter that will tell you have much memory you have used and have left. Keep it under 2025 tiles in any case. Hallelujah. I've downloaded Indiana and environs and Florida, as well as some of New England. Just one more question. Is there a simple way to keep track of what you've already downloaded? I have a hard time finding the state boundaries, so I can't just work state by state. If not, just ignore this question, as I can cope. It's fantastic to have the maps. Thanks again. Karen
  15. Do you mean this?: Yes, that's what I get. OK then, that is from MapManager not MapInstall. MapManager installs the maps into a place on your computer that BobCat and MapInstall will use, not to you GPS. MapInstall looks like this: You need to use MapInstall to send the maps to your GPS. Plug your GPS into the computer, turn it on, the open MapInstall. Select "Ibycus USA 1.4" in the map pulldown on the upper left. Once open, you will need to select the map tiles you want to send, highlighting them by clicking on them: Once you have all the tiles selected you want, click the 'Send Maps' button in the lower right. Okay! I want the whole US, but, when I use the beginning map, I keep getting more than will copy. Then, I can't figure out how to erase what I selected to choose a smaller segment. Can you tell me how to do that? Also, is there an easy way to figure out how much will load at one time? Meanwhile, thanks VERY much! Karen
  16. Do you mean this?: Yes, that's what I get.
  17. Nothing special. Did you know that ibycus also has a map of US States and County boundaries? Could you be using that one? Make sure to select the map in the dropdown on the upper right. How far did you zoom in on the map? The road data isn't seen unless you zoom in far enough. You have to select what map tiles you are loading to the GPS in Mapinstall. It should take a while to compile the tiles into one gmapsupp.img file and send it. In what way is CNNT2009 not Mac friendly when you buy the Mac version? Mapinstall doesn't ask (or offer me a chance) to select. It just asks if I want to load the ibycus maps. According to the garmin instructions, that's exactly what it's supposed to say. There's no mention anywhere of map tiles. Where's the select section? I don't know about CNNT2008, because I haven't been able to find the post again. The guy who was writing was saying that he was sending CN back to Garmin because he couldn't make it work.
  18. Try zooming in. All the data is there. The detail can be set with the slider at the bottom right. Here's a screen shot of Minneapolis, Minnesota at 0.2 miles and medium detail: Oh that makes me jealous. When I zoom in, and put the detail on high, it's nothing but white. I'm curious if what you did to get this to work. Did you just download the file, uncompress and import into Bobcat? I'm about to break down and but City Navigator. Have you gotten the Ibycus maps to download to your GPS? I've got bobcat and map manager and mapinstall, and when I try mapinstall, it says it's transferring data and that it'll take a long time, but, in fact, it takes about a minute, and, so far as I can tell, nothing actually transfers. What did you use? In another thread that I can't find again, someone seemed to be saying that the City Navigator for Mac really isn't totally Mac friendly and that you still have to do all of this to use it. Do you know if that's true? Karen
  19. Sent you a PM. Still didn't work. I sent you a PM w/ more details.
  20. Dale and Dan, I can't download the Mac file. If I try "open with Stuffit," first, it quits early on and says that there's a download error and that I should try another site (I'm using desktop, which has worked for everything else I've downloaded), and, if I try plain download first, it gives me the same message after spending about 3 hours saying it's downloading. Any suggestions? Thanks, Karen
  21. My Man Dan! thanks very much. Will I still need to create a version of trip and waypoint manager? I just uploaded it, Dale will move it to a good location and then release its URL. So your wait should be ending soon
  22. Sorry. I didn't know what parallels was until you mentioned it and I looked it up. But it sounds from Dan's post below as though he may be making a Mac version for you. Should I just wait for that? Thanks yet again. You could do that. I assumed though that you wanted to load it exclusively on the Mac side. Dale
  23. If I get parallels, can't I just use the trip and waypoint manager on parallels? Meanwhile, you rock! You are really doing all of us a great service, and you are very dedicated. Thanks again, very much. To use on a Mac, you'll have to download and install using Parallels, and then convert using Garmin's conversion program, and finally load up the created file to your Mac install. I'd offer to upload a mac version, but with the way my connection has been going, I'm not sure it would ever get there (if someone wants to offer to upload a mac version to my account online, I can generate you an FTP account)
  24. Will this work on a Mac? Also, I went to Garmin Training Center, and it seems to be a fitness program. Is that right? Thanks!
