  1. You sure its a storage tube or is it long enough to be part of a stokes mortar? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stokes_Mortar
  2. "Currently you can participate with a Garmin Colorado or most GPS-enabled PocketPC devices." Wherigo seems to be Colorado and other Pocket PPC devices only. I've a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx, its very good. I've heard issues with colorado units so I stayed away from them. I think the 76CSx series are better than the 60CSx series since they're newer. Also, the 76CSx floats if dropped in water, unlike 60CSx. I bought mine recently for 226.99 new compared to the retail price from most places at 299.99. You can search my other posts for the place to buy it for 229.99, risen since I bought mine, or I can PM it to you. I don't think you can get any more robust unless you want to deal with colorado issues.
  3. Walking sticks help immensely. I'm one of those people who will run until he hurts something. Sometimes I'll wear my feet sore. My komperdell is the best, when I'm done I just pack it up and go home.
  4. Some of these replies are humoring me. DO NOT CARRY A GUN UNLESS YOU KNOW THE LAWS IN YOUR STATE AND THE AREA YOU'RE VISITING I think that got the message cross. Please don't recommend to people carry a gun when you don't even know where they are located. 1) Carrying a gun in a national park is illegal with the exception of law enforcement and I THINK the national forest officers. 2) know your state laws, see if cities, municipalities, boroughs, etc are pre-emp from creating their own firearm laws. 3) Check the state laws on carry in state parks I live in Alaska, a state which pre-emps cities, boroughs, municipalities, etc from creating their own firearm laws. I can open carry or conceal carry WITHOUT a license. I'm getting my license, but only so I can open carry in a vehicle in Pennsylvania. I *CAN* carry in state parks in Alaska. In Pennsylvania there is a bill which hasn't been signed in to law yet for LTCF or other firearms license holders of another state to carry in Pennsylvania State Parks, but it isn't in effect yet so its currently illegal. That being said, I open carry my firearm everywhere I go, even to the bank. The only time I'll ever conceal carry is if I'm in an area where I don't want my good gun to get dirty or get sand in it. I've several good guns, but my carry weapon is a XD 45. compact until I find a nice 1911. Any questions I'll try to answer, but if you state incorrect information, you're going to get flamed. I'm sorry, but I must correct this post. WRONG! if you shoot a gun, its going to scare the bear away! It isn't the impact of the bullet which usually scares a bear away, its the sound. Also, I should note I'm more afraid of moose trampling me than a bear. Bears will charge, then just suddenly stop. This is their behavior, moose on the other hand will charge and stomp on you until you're dead. If confronted by a bear, DO NOT RUN AWAY!! This will only make the bear chase you since you're giving in, YELL and SWING YOUR ARMS *AT* the bear to tell it you're big and mean! It will go away. I recommend if you've a gun, fire a couple warning shots if you need to without hitting the bear.
  5. I paid 226.99 for my new 76CSx Did that beat the price you paid?
  6. I live in Homer, Alaska... which is a 4 hour drive from Anchorage. I set the map over a subsection of anchorage and my search exceeded 500 caches. Does anyone else have examples of cities or places like this?
  7. define pricey 226.99 for a 76CSx is not pricey to me. Well worth it.
  8. Generally I don't post links to online stores, however I still gawk at buying this 76CSx for 226.99. The price rose to 229.99 since I ordered. http://www.compuplus.com/i-Garmin-GPSMAP-7...0-1006303~.html Personally I'd go for the 76CSx and not a 60 series for the sake of maintained support. If you've the money for a colorado, then buy it. The above is the best deal you're going to get. I must say one thing, GET GARMIN. Magellan's are second rate, plus you can't use the "send to GPS" feature with them. I must also mention you can get a 30 day free trial on geocaching.com for he premium caching when you buy Garmin.
  9. Exactly what I'd thinking of doing, or set the GPS coordinates to a fixed item position. Though, that method sounds more fun, since they'd need to look for the item themselves.
  10. Wow! I love that idea. Would only work in the summer time here. In the winter, theres a possibility of a person getting frostbite or worse, slip and fall from the water getting frozen minutes after it hits the ground. However, it may be possible on the shore since its not easy to freeze from all the warm air/water. Many caches are not winter accessible. A bunch of those are disabled for a couple or so months every year. I've been reading logbooks at caches, many which are placed are winter accessible here. My first cache is winter accessible as well. I think I'll stick to all the public trails and areas for when I place my caches so people can enjoy them all year round.
  11. It would be a permanently placed item in the visitor's center, like a educational painted plywood bear with information. Just trying to think of educational caches people can enjoy when the weather is bad.
  12. This happened to me, but it was not fault of technology. Make sure when you're geocaching, you don't accidently push buttons while in map mode, there is an option to "move" a point. This happened to me yesterday about 10pm at night. A security guard at a hospital was wondering why I was walking about. We check the hospital and the point was dead center in the hospital(complete coincidence it moved to the center of the hospital). We checked throughout the hospital, but I wasn't going to go in to any rooms. I thought to myself, something is really wrong here, or someone is a complete a** and I'm going to report them. I went home, looked at the point, and it was off by .31km Again, make sure buttons aren't accidentally being pushed, it MAY move the point.
  13. Well I found the only difference in the 60CSx and the 76CSx, the 76CSx floats. I think the other difference might be life of support as well. Vista HCx doesn't have tide tables, nor does it float. I live all around water, my GPS unit BETTER float. XD
  14. I live in Homer, Alaska and people come here to see stuff. Does anyone know if its possible to get a cache approved if I make some sort of destination to an item in a visitor's center? I'd get permission from the visitors center of course. I've been in side, its full of wildlife stuff, pictures, and those educational posters. The building is owned by the state and a wildlife refuge organization, I'm sure they'd say okay to me if it didn't bother anybody.
  15. Wow! I love that idea. Would only work in the summer time here. 16. LOL! Now that would be funny. I don't think I'd attempt to climb up a tree 50 feet here, since they're not really climbing material. You never know when a branch is pine beetle eaten. Well, I think my first cache is difficult but acceptable, I picked a nice place. Beautiful views are all over where I live. Thinking of that, I might know another place where there isn't a cache.
  17. hmm noted. Well I want to make educational caches like the earth caches as well. Not sure what it falls under since I'm only 2 days new. I've a path in my head already, and I could have the tourist print off a cute solution sheet. I don't know if I like the really simple to find caches, its not why I started geocaching. Many people who come to Alaska are wanting wilderness fun and a physically stressing time. The cache I just placed is where I said it is, but its difficult to get. Anyone attempting will most likely get scratched by the Earth. To me, that is a good cache, just like riding a mountain bike. The mountain bike saying is, if you're not bleeding, you're not having fun.
  18. Help me with some ideas here. I've some excellent ideas and math puzzle ideas, but would like to hear what others have done. I live in Alaska, so we do get plenty of tourists, and yes.. people DO geocache when theres plenty of snow on the ground. I'm trying to make caches which are easy to get to, but difficult to obtain. So far I've placed one cache, and I hope people have a difficult time getting to it. I love a good challenge, don't you? Sorry, I can't tell my secrets, theres only 1 cache which I found invigorating to find so far and only because it was in the middle of the woods located off a trail by a couple hundred feet.
  19. Is there a reason why people still buy 60CSx over 76CSx? btw, bought my 76CSx for 226.99 new
  20. I'm new to Geocaching and was searching for a decent GPS unit. I went to compuplus.com and searched their units since google listed some in the searches. Currently the price is $229.99, I bought it for 226.99, which is still a low price compared to $299.99 from NewEgg. I did look at other brands, but Garmin is the defacto, the newer company behind the Magellan name isn't very good at product support nor the product itself. Also looking at the "send to gps" feature on geocaching.com, Garmin is DEFINITELY the way to go! Anyway, I'm off to find some caches, I live in Alaska. This will be a blast. I've a cache of my own ready to place, but I'll place it somewhere next week. Later~!
