I see that the quilt peices need to be signed with a fabric pen ... but is there sewing involved? Can someone sum up what the findee of a geoquilt cache is required to do? The finder of the geoquilt cache is required to sign one of the quilt pieces in the cache. The pieces are then to be mailed to Cliffy or 300Mag in Ottawa (self-addressed envelopes included in the cache). A fine lady from New York (DxChallenged) will be taking all the signed quilt pieces and sewing them into a giant quilt which will be a compilation of signed quilt pieces from geocachers across Canada.
  2. When I first started out I bought the basic yellow eTrex. After geocaching for a while, the value of the PC synch cable became obvious and so I bought one too. Total price - close to the value of the Venture which comes with the cable. If I knew then what I know now I would definitely have bought the Venture. And, like others have pointed out you get a bunch of other useful features such as: - click stick for navigating through screens & menus - better screen resolution (160x288 pixels versus 64x128 for the basic eTrex) - 20 routes versus 1 - Better mapping capabilities (includes the ability to download and map points of interest) - WAAS enabled (for better accuracy) All of which is more than worth the small price differential.
  3. Hello all, I am trying to find the best online price for an eTrex Legend that I would like to purchase for some colleagues in the UK (I am from Canada). I have looked at GPS Warehouse and at expansys. I have also seen a reference to maplins on this forum but can't seem to find a link. The best price I can find is £224 (incl. VAT). Is there a better source out there? The price of this same unit here in Canada is about £139, but it comes with the North American basemap, not the European one (and you can't get them preloaded with the European basemap here in North America). Another option would be to buy the North America unit and then buy the European Mapsource CD as an add-on - I could still do this for under £200 - what functionality would I be giving up by doing this? Any and all help is appreciated.
  4. Jeremy, This is great, but would it be possible to expand this to Canada as well? Information on the Canadian Base Network can be found at the following geocaching link: Canadian Base Network Geocache
  5. rschoolf, Just wanted to drop a note saying how great this little app is. My wife and I went away for the weekend this past weekend, and of course geocaching was part of the fun. Before we went, I downloaded all the local caches into my GPS, and then I used the GeoClipper to download the information pages into my Palm. No more need to handle pages and pages of printouts, especially since we did not know in advance which caches we would visit. My wife commented several times on how this was far superior to the paper method. I also have an app in my palm for decoding the hints, so the few times we got stuck it was real easy to pull out my Palm and cut and paste the clue into the decoder app. Presto - instant hint! Thanks again.
  6. quote:Originally posted by Web-ling: Spammers ARE getting email addresses from geocaching.com http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/25021_1200.gif I have been getting some of the same. I suspect this is spammers that are using a web-bot to scour websites, discussion groups, forums etc. looking for e-mail addresses. If you have posted your e-mail address on this forum, or on a geocache page it is potentially vulnerable.
  7. Anyone have suggestions on the best type of paint to use on a plastic container? My experience is that most types of paint don't adhere well to plastic and will tend to flake with any amount of exposure to the elements. Anyone have a container that has been out for a long time (one year plus) that has had good results for paint adhesion? The other factor is that I live in Canada, so the temperature change through the seasons is from about -30F to +90F.
  8. 300mag & Cliffy, I would be more than willing to take on responsibility for coordinating the Canadian quilt cache in the Edmonton area. I will send you my contact details.

  10. quote:Originally posted by spog: I have just downloaded a set of waypoints from the site. I also have a set of waypoints on my Garmin III+. I want to combine both sets into a single set. I seem to be able to do this using the GPS, but is there any way I can do this using just software on my PC? I have geobuddy, easygps & mapsource, but it seems that merging is not possible. I can get one set open or another, but not both merged. Help. Spog You can do this in EasyGPS, although it is not obvious. If you open multiple files in EasyGPS, you can "Tile" the Windows and then drag and drop waypoints from one to the other.
  11. quote:Originally posted by Gustaf: Yes you can. Just use any free counter service on the web and paste the code in your cache description. Make sure that the counter doesn't use Javascript. I put a counter on one of my caches (link below). Click on the small graph icon on the cache page to see the stats. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=15784 Thanks Gustaf for the link. Now does anyone know of an equivalent counter service that is not in Swedish (sorry but my language skills are not that good )

  13. First saw it in a newspaper article in the Edmonton Journal online last May. Article tagline caught my attention, and then I recognized one of the individuals in the picture as a co-worker. Couldn't convince my wife that we "needed" to buy a GPS, so I had to wait until that summer to log a couple caches with a friend and his GPS. Got my eTrex in August, and have been happily addicted ever since (and my wife is now a fellow geocaching advocate...).
  14. I noticed some discussion on another thread (now locked) regarding the use of PayPal from Canada. I just set up an account at the beginning of this week and had no trouble at all making the payment for my membership to Groundspeak. You also don't need to wait for your first credit card statement to activate your account - PayPal allows you to spend up to $250 before your account is fully activated by this method. It worked just fine for me!! There is an additional charge for an international order of 2.6% plus $0.30 for a grand total of $1.14 premium on the $30 price. Oh - and the most useful feature of membership so far is the ability to customize the tag line under your name on the forums

Not a positive contribution to the sport at all. Those who wish to place caches still will - no extra incentive needed.
