  1. Ikobi: I personally think that it would depend on how you handled it and the type of cache you placed. You said it would be a virtual cache and not a regular cache. I think this is fine, as long as it is worded appropriately and isn't done to exploit the ghoulishness of the spot. It may be ghoulish to some extent either way, but there are tons of tours that people take all over this country that do the same thing. Theres graveyard tours of the rich in LA, theres grave tours in New Orleans, theres tours to see where gangsters were killed in Chicago, etc. As someone who lives in the DC Area, I have encountered many people who want to go see the spot. It is not to get their jollies, but human curiosity. As for RAD DAD: your posts on this topic have just dropped my opinion of you to nothing. It is ok to have strong opinions and feelings about something, but the stuff that you posted here was totally uncalled for. IMHO Dep
  2. Well, things seem to be jumping here in VA, although we have yet to run into another cacher out in the wilds. Also, Uno was up in Indianapolis this weekend for the Indy 500 and introduced his cousin to the sport of GC and he is now hooked. So at least there is one new member Dep
  3. Hey all If you want to read a very easy to understand and very informative description of ivy, oak and sumac, go to WWW.WEBMD.COM and type in poison ivy in the search box. The first match it has is really educational. Even if you know all abouot it, you may want to read the last paragraph of the article. It talks about a new over the counter lotion called bentoquatam. It is applied at least 15 minutes before possible exposure and either prevents and/or reduces the effects. It can be applied every 4 hours for extended excursions. Just thought everyone might be interested. Dep
  4. This is the most dangerous thing I have seen posted in these forums yet. We should NEVER "let it rest". If you need a reminder about just what happened a short 9 months ago to steel your resolve again, watch the special "In Memoriam" on HBO tomorrow night. The warnings are being put out for good reason. It doesn't mean you have to avoid everything, just use some common sense and keep your eyes open for anything strange. The warnings are to keep people aware and vigilant, not make them afraid. Just my $.02 Dep
  5. I am one of the ones who doesn't know what poison ivy even looks like. I know I have seen it, because other people that have logged some of the same caches on the same days as I have have mentioned tons of it. I like to take my dog out when caching. Do I need to worry about her being exposed as well or are animals truly immune? Thanx Dep
  6. Thats all there is to this post. No complaint, no rant. Just a thank you for all the hard work you do and the BS you put up with. Looking forward to a fun holiday weekend of Geocaching with my new Garmin Map76S. Dep

  8. I happen to like them and would ask that they be kept as is. It seems that some people really lose sleep over them though. Too them, I say go find a new hobby. This one obviously has become not fun for you anymore if a "found" count has got you this worked up. And it seems to be a certain few that are bugged by these little things. I say leave them as they are. Dave
  9. I posted this in the correct forum, but as this forum tends to get more traffic, or so it seems, I thoughht there may be some interest in it here as well. If not, I apologize Hey there Just thought I would let you all know that after reading aboutthe bad experiences with AdvancedGPS, I took the advice of another user and placed an order with TVNAV.Com last Friday (May 17). First off the person on the other end of the phone was just about the nicest phone rep I have ever dealt with. I was ordering the Garmin Map76S and the price was right. Also got the cigarette lighter adapter for good measure. Paid an extra 5 dollars for 2 day air. By late that evening I had the tracking number and shipment confirmation in my email box. By noon today (May 21) I had my new toy in my hot little hands. I HIGHLY recommend this company for your GPS needs and I will definately be giving them my business in the future. Dave

  15. Just want to say thanx for everyones advice and input. We finally decided to go with the new Garmin Map 76S. Yes, I know, it is above the price range we were thinking, but it has gotten some really positive reviews. We also looked at the Garmin V, but have been told that the Map 76S works better in heavy tree cover. Should have it tues and will definately put it to use over Memorial day weekend so will let you all know how it goes! Thanx again! Dave

  17. I did a search on this topic but the most detailed post was from Sept 2001. Anyone have more recent opinions? We currently have a Garmin III+ but want another one to use when we are separated. Any recomendations? How is the Garmin V? Thanx
  18. I don't need a bunch of responses, but we currently have a Garmin III+ and I am wanting to buy another cheaper model so that when Uno is out of town (like he will be over the long memorial day weekend), I can still go chase down some caches. I see that that the E-Trex is down to $115.00. Will that do ok for just occasional caching use? Would just like to hear a couple of opinions cuz I need to order it fast if I want it here by next weekend. Major concern is tree cover. We live in Virginia........lotsa trees Thanx in advance Dave

  20. As a huge Big Brother fan, I am happy to say that they ARE doing a third season this summer and it should start in late June. You can visit the CBS web page for more info. Wish we lived close enough to hunt your cache when you get it placed. Would be awesome to see the the set, even if it is from afar.

  22. Hey there all I just want to say that as someone who just started reading these message forums recently, thank you to those who like to help out and offer advice, opinions and even debate at times. All of this really is informative to read. But a big "Shame on you" to the people that I see telling people that the things they are posting about have already been discussed too much, or are tiresome. Something you may have read and posted about 100 times may be completely new to me. Most people put a pretty understandable subject line on their post. If you see a topic that you feel you have already read all you can about or posted aqll the opinions you have about, then just don't go in and read that series of posts. There just may be someone out there who is logging in for the first time who will find that thread informative. It almost makes me leary to post anything. Just because you are behind a computer and not face to face doesn't mean you can be rude. Just my $.02 Dep
  23. I don't think anyone in here is talking about New, clean, McToys or anything else that is still in it's wrapper or in like new condition. Everyone has pretty much agreed that those are great for the kids. What is being called trash here are things that are broken, dirty, half eaten, or inappropriate etc. Dep
  24. I completely agree with everything that has been said so far. You can stock up on a ton of great stuff at Walmart or Target for cheap. Yes, the reward is in finding the cache, but opening it to find trash or someones used and broken toys is ridiculus. Not ALL Geocachers have kids. And yes, I do like to find something worth taking as a souvenir of the journey. On a similar note. People should really look at the "Theme" of certain geocaches before leaving something there. Many people go to great creative lengths to set up specific themed caches, only to have the people they did all the work for totally ruin it by putting in the above mentioned garbage. It was SOOOOO refreshing yesterday to go to a movie/DVD/VHS cache that has been active for about 5 months and actually find it full of movies. Now, to be fair, since all but 1 or 2 of the movies were not child friendly, we did leave a beanie bear (our signature item) and a wheresgeorge dollar, but this was in ADDITION to a DVD of Casablanca. That way we helped contribute to the theme but also left something fun for the next person who had a kid with them. But we have gone to themed caches that had nothing left in them that would indicate what the theme was. If it says it's a music CD themed cache, then leave a music CD, not a happy meal toy or an "Jesus Loves Me" button. If trash is all that people are finding when they get to each cache, people are going to stop looking for them. Just my $.02 Dep
