  1. How do you add waypoints to favorites category? I use a Garmin Etrex Legend with GSAK. Is there a way to mark the favorites in GSAK then download them into the Legend?
  2. I personally love mystery caches and mutti-caches. I like challenging caches.
  3. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We morn with them.
  4. I use Cachemate with my Palm. It is a great program for your PDA. GSAK will export to Cachemate. I found this much easier than Mobi Pocket Reader. You can get cachemate from Handango for $7.00. They also offer a trial version to try before you buy. It is very user friendly. I like GSAK because it keeps track of your finds and DNFs and lets you export to your GPS and Cachemate. If you put in your home coords, you can arrange your waypoints in miles from your location to see which ones are nearest you. You can also print out your spreadsheet. It is very user friendly too! Good Luck.
  5. We carry most of the same items already mentioned. One item not mentioned that is important for South Georgia is a good pair of tweezers for tick removal along with "After Bite" the Itch Eraser stick.
  6. I tried this in Cachemate and it worked like a charm. This is AWESOME! Thanks so much!
  7. I use an Extrex Legend. Today I needed to project a waypoint in feet. My Legend would only let me project it in miles (0000.00mi). Is there a way to change the setting so that it will read in feet instead of miles?
  8. Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to Saturday so I can revisit my DNF and get my smiley!!
  9. I logged a DNF for my second cache. Since that time, two friendly cachers emailed me to let me know that due to problems with the cache and the fact that the cache owner left town, the cache had been moved to a new location that was listed in the logs. My question is: Once you log a DNF, is it politically correct to look for the cache again? If so, do you edit your first log and change it to Found or create a new log for the find? Thanks for the advice!
  10. Thanks to all for the advice. I did buy the book and enjoyed reading it! I've finally got a handle on this and am able to download waypoints and enter them manually. We've found 8 caches so far! This is such a great sport and everyone has been so helpful! Thanks Robespierre for the offer, unfortunately I'm in Georgia...way too far from Ohio to take you up on your offer. I think I will check out the regional forums so that I can meet some local cachers. Thanks again everyone!
  11. I too am a new cacher and I had a DNF for my second cache. Because I still wasn't sure enough of my GPS abilities, I emailed the cache owner to see if I was looking in the wrong area. In my case, the original cache owner had left town and someone else had moved the cache to a new location because it was underwater at the old coords. The new coordinates were listed in past logs. Also, once I logged my DNF, another friendly cacher emailed me to let me know that it had been moved. I didn't feel so dumb after that!! So, I guess my point is if all else fails, email the owner...So far everyone I've corresponded with has been extremely helpful.
  12. Okay, I've downloaded Plucker and I also have GSAK with my information database already prepared. What do I do next?
  13. Does CacheMate allow you to view the maps too? I've been using Mobi Pocket reader and all I get are cache pages and hints...no maps.
  14. I just purchased my Etrex Legend two days ago. How do I determine the firmware version on the unit? I don't want to download firmware if mine is already current. Thanks for your advice!

  16. Hi All, I purchased my first gps unit today... an Etrex Legend and have found that manipulating the buttons is very difficult to do (especially with arthritis in my fingers.) I find myself using both hands and turning the unit to press the buttons. I'm thinking about returning it to the store, but am unsure what unit to buy to replace it. I know the Magellan SporTrac Map is comparable, but I've read the posts regarding the stress fractures from the screws, so I've pretty much steered clear of that model. Any suggestions will be appreciated!!
  17. This is a great tip. I'm headed to the bookstore!! Thanks!
  18. I'm both a geocaching beginner and a GPS beginner. I understanding the geocaching part, it's the GPS part that I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around. I'll post my question there also as suggested! Thanks!
  19. Are there any step by step instructions for beginners? I've read many posts in the forums which give me bits and pieces of the steps, but would like to see a great "how to get started" article. For example, I have a cache sheet which gives gives the following information: Going to Gatlinburg by MountainMudbug & TigerShark [profile] N 35° 42.458 W 083° 31.161 (WGS84) UTM: 17S E 272078 N 3954447 or convert to NAD27 at Jeeep.com Click icon to download: loc or gpx. What do I do now? I also see that there are free desktop applications that support GPX and LOC file formats for managing the loc/gps files. Short of downloading all of these, which ones are recommended? Thanks to anyone who can help me.
  20. Thanks for the advice. Printing out the map sounds like a good idea!
  21. Thanks for the info. What, in your opinion, is the best gps for a newbie geocacher for the lowest price?
  22. I'm looking to purchase a gps unit and just saw the new Magellan eXplorist 200. Has anyone used this gps yet? If so, how do you like it and how does it compare with other Garmin and Magellan units?
