  1. thanks so much for the file. it's exactly what i need. Back in action!
  2. Well, it finally happened. My GPS bit the dust. It didn't die from a splash in water or a fall down a rock face. No, it died when I plugged in the USB and opened up the Vantage Point software from Magellan. My unit is an eXplorist 500 and has been a great geocaching gps. I somehow managed to remove the base map. Not an uncommon problem from what I read however when I called Magellan Customer Service, I got a guy with a really thick accent and that was problem #1. Problem number two was when he said that...and I quote..."there is nothing that can be done." What? Its a software problem....my GPS lost a file and this guy tells me that NOWHERE in the vast Magellan company is a copy he can get to me. He offers to give me a reduced price on a Triton 400...which I don't like. I just want my old GPS to work....but according to him thats not happening. The guy who was working with me was nice but the company and there policies are what gets me. How can they not have a basemap file. Anyway, I'm getting a Garmin.
  3. I returned a couple days ago from a geocaching adventure only to find that I picked up a couple hitchhikers. These are the original "travel bugs". None of them were attached thank goodness. But I was driving home and one was in my drink I had left in the car so it had to have crawled off of me. Second one was discovered as soon as I walked in the door and took off my shoes, I saw it on my wrist. That prompted me to kinda expedite the trip to the shower lol. So, I took a shower and did a good ol tick search. No more travel bugs found or logged thank goodness! In terms of insect repellant or tick awareness, what are some good ideas to keep these little suckers off you? I'm an avid hiker and know it comes with the territory of the woods but only when I started geocaching did they really start jumping on me. This comes, I'm sure, from walk through the brush. Following a GPS to a geocache usually involves walking in straight lines or something along those lines. So I know they get on to me when I go through the thick of it. Just wondering if I should suck it up, or there is some miracle DEET out there...or both.
  4. LOL! thats funny. I believe you are right and it would behoove me to just save up for the 400T. And probably by then something else more advanced would have came out. My magellan 500le hasn't let me down yet so I believe I'll just stick with it unless it succombs to the elements. Like I said, it usually puts me within a 10-20' circle of the cache everytime depending on the provided coordinates accuracy. I just wish the magellan software was a bit more feature ridden. It has the basics though. Where can I get a map with some roads or topo or something for it?
  5. I have a explorist 500le and it's pretty good. I guess I should follow the axiom of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" so I haven't totally decided to ditch the 500 just yet. However, I'm a techno junkie which is a curse. If there's something that has more bells and whistles or is more accurate, I take notice lol. Seems that the Garmin Colorados are the top of the line aside from the professional use GPS. Here's somethings I'm looking for in my new GPS. See if you guys know of one that I'm describing: -Geocaching features (a MUST) -WAAS or something else that's really accurate -background map. nothing fancy just perhaps roads and such. -adjustable backlight -rugged (water resistant, can take a bit of a beating) -decent battery life -less than $300. optimal price of $200 range I dont care if it has a color screen or not. One I'm looking at is a Garmin GPSMAP 60 any opinions on that? Any help is appreciated.
  6. haha thanks guys. In the past 3 days, I've found almost 20 caches. I've gotten my girlfriend hooked on it. She's the driver and I'm the navigator lol. It's so much fun. My uncle is also hooked now. He even went out and got a new Magellan Triton. I got an explorist 500le and when it gets that WAAS enabled, I usually go straight to the cache and find it VERY soon after. I've learned that hunting at night makes the difficulty go up a couple of stars. It's super hard to find a camo tube, buried, in briers while trying to hold a flashlight and a gps. But I just can't stop until I've found it. So far no absolute DNL's. I've had to postpone a hunt because it was getting really late but that hunt was resumed the following day and the cache found. Thanks for all you guys and gals' support.
  7. I was just wondering how do I delete a bookmark list?. I know how to delete individual bookmarks but just not the list once I've completed finding all the caches on my bookmark list. I just don't see an option to do that.
  8. Hey guys. I was introduced to this hobby (i guess that's what it is) by a guy I met in a parking lot kinda wondering around. I was curious as to what he was looking for because he had a GPS and was looking EVERYWHERE! I went over to see if I could help out and he was like sure and told me briefly about geocaching. Sounded interesting to me because I LOVE hiking and I have a GPS with me if I get lost. Never really used it for anything else except for safety. Now I guess I can put it to a bit more use. I've did nothing but read and watch videos about GC'ing and I think I'm ready to go. I got 5 caches laid out for tomorrow's hunt, all local, and all (supposedly) not that hard. I'm excited and will report back how it goes. -NG
