  1. It's in Commonwealth countries you're not allowed to deface the currency.

Thanks Droo (and WriteShopRobert), I was wondering how US companies got away with adding colour to them.

  2. ...there are some bullion official pieces, with face value of 1$ (so.. we can call them coins), the walking liberty ones! they are 1 oz of pure silver! But... who could give it in its face value???? Especially if you bought it more...or much more??? :D

The US Silver Eagle bullion coin folks. Currency Value $1 (backed by US Govt) Silver Value about $15. You could engrave a tracking number on it and call it a geocoin but you take the risk of ending up in jail for defacing currency.

  3. Yep, a Numismatist could question our use of the term "coin" in "geocoin". Sure the round metal ones look like coins but they are not legal tender. One could say all geocoins are fake coins and Matt B Good is trying to pull a fast one by taking our attention off this fact by focussing on the whole trackable thing :D

Anyway, we all know that it aint a geocoin unless it has a picture of Signal

  4. I don't want to insult the designer but according to me this is still a 10$ coin like any others.

and why did you have only 25 of each minted instead of offering them as a presale ?

It's just that people are willing to pay more since it is very limited.

Any chance of having these versions up for regular sale after you bought your camera ?

Good questions that deserve answers. I'll give it a shot. You have answered most of your own questions. A $5 - $10 production cost for a small run (incl mail from China to the US) sounds about right. The prices these coins are fetching is due to their limited numbers (availability). If he reminted them they would no longer be XLE's and the people that bought them wouldn't be happy. It would kill the trust that an LE/XLE is a limited number coin. I'd stop purchasing them. While I won't be rushing out to buy these coins at their current values, I take some comfort in the fact that their prices are due to their limited numbers. I asssume you were referring to him putting the remainders of each version up for regular sale (rather than reminting) once he has covered his production and camera costs. He could do that or he could give them away as part of a cointest. I am writing this more for the newbees who may not be aware of the whole LE/XLE thing.

  5. Settle down folks, the OP has made a fair point.

I want to take this opportunity to formerly apologise to the 150 kids I mugged to create my yo-yo collection.

"No sir, please don't take my yo-yo"

"It's not your yo-yo anymore. Bwaa Ha Ha"

Edit : I hear a Candy collection is even easier to create.

  6. I started out as a Type A but, then my car took a royal dump on me, and now I can't drive around town, much less take any caching trips. So now I just spend all my money on geocoins and enjoy looking at them, and sharing them with a friend or two.

What I don' get tis the collecting monetary money. Why would I want to pay $20 for a quarter ? :)

Trust me, you don't want to know the answer to that question

  7. 1. What is your favourite finish?

Depends on the coin. Whatever I feel best suits the design however I do lean towards polished gold and bronze.

    2. What is your favourite 2-tone finish?

Not fussed as long as the effect adds distinction rather than bluriness. I like polished metal coupled with matt metal as this tends to achieve this.

    3. Do you like to see multiple finishes offered for a coin? Do you buy them all, or just your favourite(s)?

Yes. I then choose my favourite or favourites. Won't collect a set unless I really like all the finishes.

    4. Do you prefer round coins or shaped coins?

Generally round but will make exceptions. Depends on the coin.

    5. Do you prefer trackable or non-trackable?

    No preference.

    6. Do you prefer personal coins, caching-related coins, or 'art' coins?

I only buy coins that I consider to have good artistic merit. That includes a number of personal and caching-related coins.

    7. Do you collect around a theme (what theme), or collect whatever catches your eye?

    Whatever catches my eye.

    8. Do you have a coin budget? Do you ever go over this budget?

    Yes. Sometimes.

    9. Are you more likely to buy a coin, or trade for a coin?

About a 75/25 split though I prefer opening a package received via a trade.

    10. Do you have any 'absolutely never trade' coins in your collection, or are they all fair game for a trade?

    About 95% are 'never trade'.

  8. Still 15 shy of 100 'paid and delivered' sales for the icon - Sorry couldn't get enough of the raw specialty glass at the one time. Should be fine to proceed once i have signed off on the others.

Do you mean there were 85 made following pre-order #3 or 85 in total ?

  9. My daughter is an astrophysics major. I would like to get her the new coin from Landsharkz 2009 Year of Astronomy in satin gold. Does anyone have 1 to trade? It seems you can only buy a minimum of 2? Thanks.

They are a 2 coin set, same front image on both coins but different backs.

The sets come in either Satin Gold Or Satin Silver.

  10. I live in South Australia, Australia and look online at nearby Geocaches. Heaps of them have Geocoins. The thing is, I don't know where you get unactivated Geocoins. I know there is some place because I have seen the Australia Geocoin. I (and I'm sure there's others) would like to know where the people that have them get them. Does anyone know where you can get Geocoins in Australia? (I'm obviously looking for places in South Australia BUT I travel, plus the are probably other people that would like to know where you get Geocoins that live in other states.)

Probley the best place to get all type's off trackable's including aussie gc's is Geostore.com in sydney they will post out to you

None of the web page images displayed when I went to the site. I have automatic updates turned on so everything should be up to date on my computer.

  11. I have never had anything go missing in the post (several hundred packages to/from USA and Europe)

Post to Australia usually takes 1 to 3 weeks.

Had 2 packages take 6 weeks. When they arrived the packages had a sticker on them saying they had gone through the mail delivery centre in Mascot (which is next to Sydney airport). The guy that x-rayed them probably thought they required further inspection. We x-ray ALL postal items that come into our country. I assume all mail goes through that centre however they don't usually add a sticker. Maybe the sticker was added on its return from another building

  12. Mapamundi XXL Geocoin - 20€

    Mapamundi Geocoin - 11€

Thanks, you just reminded me about these. I'll purchase these from you because the shop that sells them doesn't post to Australia, New Zealand and many other first world countries. As a courtesy, I sent the shop an email asking if this is a mistake in their cart system.

  13. i am interested but very gun shy since i just had a rather expensive geocoin lost or stolen in the mail coming from europe. it was a trade geocoin and insurance isn't available for a reasonable rate, so my loss. i will now conduct international business only if i'm not worried about the item going "missing in action". such is life in the geocoin world.

    Sorry to hear about that.

I have never had anything go missing in the post (several hundred packages to/from USA and Europe)

People, don't be concerned about international post, it works (IMO)

  14. Couldn't resist picking up an RE2; love the balance the extra gold adds.

A mistake you say, well then, I hope it magically turns into an LE :(

Taking the RE2 and replacing the A.N. centre with Antique Gold, Copper or Black Nickel should also work.

    Congrats !

  15. I've seen people all over the internet selling geocoins. Now I suppose I can assume these are all "new" geocoins that are meant to be put into circulation, but I doubt that. What's with the sale of them?

If you are wondering whether the coins you see for sale have been stolen from caches the answer is no 99.99% of the time. If you see an activated geocoin for sale, the seller will be the owner of the coin. A lot of people like to activate their geocoins even though they don't intend to place them in caches. Having said this, there have been a few cases of stolen coins being sold on ebay so if buying an activated coin make sure the seller can provide adoption.

You will see some coins listed on ebay with the term "new" in the title. This can mean any number of things but usually it means unactivated OR recently released & unactivated OR simply in new condition.

  16. I would love to try this but I don't live in the staes but what can you do

That's easy if you don't mind a little substitution. How about going around your area and filling up 50 caches with McDonald's flyers. Then reward yourself by cutting a geocoin sized circle out of a cheeseburger wrapper. Mail it to yourself with a thank you note from Ronald (fake his signiture). Put your new coin and thank you note on your mantlepiece. Make sure to point it out to friends when they come over.

  17. I haven't made one yet. I was de-motivated by the cold reception my Windows Vista geocoin idea received.

<grin> Sometimes coin design is like submitting writing to publishers. You end up with a big stack of rejection notices. You just gotta keep at it. : )

Thanks for the encouragement. I am sure the Mariah Carey 2009 (Still annoying in eight octaves) geocoin will do much better. The AE has glitter !
