  1. This may be a bit off topic, but it is a pet peeve of mine that some cache owners rate their caches a "1" and then leave no hint and/or leave the cache size a "?" so that you have no idea what you're looking for. I think if someone rates a cache under 2, then 99% of the people going for it should be able to find it on the first try. After all, I think the point of Geocaching is actually FINDING a cache. (off soap box now).

  2. I just spent an hour reading old threads with amazing ideas on containers, camos, making them, etc. (The thread was from 2004 so a lot of pictures weren't there anymore).

So I have questions - and thought that the answers I get would probably help others that are new to hiding and possibly even help others that have been around for awhile but looking for more ideas...

    1. I personally am in this for the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of the find. I don't care about the prizes/swag inside. So as I'm getting ready to hide some I'm not too concerned about putting in FTF prizes (especially the really small ones) BUT I also don't want someone getting annoyed or posting a comment because I don't have a FTF prize or because it's not cool enough. I have a couple FTF buttons that are the size of a quarter, but even those won't fit into the smaller containers and they're not cool... How do others feel about the FTF prizes?

    2. How close to your home would you hide a cache? We're planning on hiding them all within a 5 miles radius of our home - which does include a lot of parking lots and parks so we can do both woods and urban caches... But there is also a spot or two that are very close to our home that I was thinking would be a cool place to hide because of the location BUT also because it would be funny to see people come look for them. I live on a residential street though that's pretty darn quiet - do you think I should be more concerned about bringing traffic onto my street? I don't really think any geocacher would be into staking out homes but maybe I should be more cautious? (I wasn't going to post my address or anything crazy like that - but I would be able to see the people from our back windows - about 100-200 yards away from my home and a couple neighbors' homes).

    3. So far we've only made containers wrapped in black electrical tape for more urban hides although we have two that are larger for the woods'y hides... I have a long list of things I'd like to make though after reading the other posts. Are there any cache's that you think you'd like to see more of? Ours aren't going to get you to a great view - again it's more about the thrill of the hunt and possibly a walk for some exercise.

    4. Other than: log book, pencil, note on what a geocache is printed from the site, plastic bags, some little trinkets (typical match box cards, mcdonalds toys, and other random things that we've seen or found in other caches) and some travel dogs and geocoins... Is there anything else that we need/should include in our caches?

    Thanks!

  3. Tiwica gave a very good method for entering cache coordinates. I did this very same method for nine local caches. I printed out the information, and "named" them C-1, C-2, etc.; creating a new waypoint for each one. Since all the caches were pretty local, I only had to change some of the coodinates.

I'd suggest taking a bit more time to "play" with your new toy. This is what I have been doing: Make my house a waypoint and walking/driving around the neighborhood. Create other waypoints, and then try to navigate back to them, etc. Carry your GPS with you wherever you go for awhile. Get really familiar with it.

    Your mileage may vary..... Mike

  4. I got a Garmin E-Trex GPS for Christmas. I have spent the last few days getting familiar with it, and find the operation pretty intuitive and easy to use. I have yet to actually look for a cache with it, but I intend to do so in the near future as time allows.
