  1. This may be a stupid question... I'm new to star gazing, artificial or otherwise. I stood out there waiting for my flare, and I think I was looking in the right direction. Maybe I missed it (I was distracted by my pups right when the flare was supposed to happen), but I think I couldn't see it because of the moon and the light pollution from the city. How dark does it have to be to see one of these flares? Should I trek out to the country on a moon-less night to see it? /Alienpuppy

  3. - Talk to a reporter for your local paper, and help them with an article about GeoCaching. This has helped some people find the hobby. - Introduce friends. Things like this tend to travel work-of-mouth. - If you are real energetic, organize geo-caching events for other organizations that might find it interesting: scouts, picnics, etc. Just some ideas. /Alienpuppy

  5. Hi, I had a travel bug picked up by a West Virginia/Pennsylvania geocacher named "sludgepup". He mentioned GeoJones in the log as well. I haven't seen any activity from either cacher since June (when they picked up my bug) and they haven't yet responded to my e-mails. I'm hoping someone in this forum may know them, and possibly get my bug back into circulation... I suppose they have given up on geocaching, which is fine. The bug is Andre The Seal: http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=305 Click HERE His goal is to reach Maine, and has been making good progress. Please help if you can! Thanks, /AlienPuppy
  6. Very cool. I hope to see the -8 magnitude one by my house this next week! /Alienpuppy

  8. I am one who has had a bug for a while. But here is my excuse: 1. The bug wants to "move south". 2. I meant to drop it on a trip to AZ, but didn't find any caches. (Lack of planning) 3. Proceeded to take trips to Oregon and Ohio, but ALAS, these are not south. 4. e-mailed owner, but no response. When I make it to a cache south of where I found it, I'll drop it. But, I feel by e-mailing the owner, I'm exempt. I offered several solutions, but they haven't responded. But, I do feel very guilty. But if the goal is not printed on a card with the bug, how am I supposed to know until I pick it up and check the page... Would it be rude to just ignore the goal to get it moving? /Alienpuppy
  9. Bruce, I was going to post a reply asking you how you do it... The past three times I've gone on vacation, I've hit none of the caches I'd wanted to... mostly because of poor planning. So, it was helpful to hear your explanation. One question: Do you print all the pages manually? I find this very tedious, and the website doesn't allow off-line subscriptions because it blocks 'bots. What I try to do is download the webpages for each cache in a given area, but because I have to do this manually, my coverage is usually lacking. Just curious. Thanks, Alienpuppy
  10. Hi, I am just repeating what others have said, but I've used both e-mail and the forums to help my travel bugs along. I had one bug that sat in a cache for a very long time... so I posted a topic to the appropriate area (New Zealand) and it was picked up with in a week... after sitting idle for months! I've also sent e-mail to people to make sure things are well with my travel bugs. Most people get back to me right away. As far as rules, I don't think I could replace a bug in a week's time. I try not to hold them too long, but sometimes a bug's goal will require a little bit of planning. I think people need to be patient when it comes to travel bugs. I'm happy as long as mine are not missing, and the holder responds to e-mail. I know that all is well, and when they get the chance, they will drop the bug. This is much better than not knowing... /AlienPuppy
  11. Hi, I am going to be in Cincinnati next week, and was wondering if there are any recommended caches that I could take my nephews to find. I will be staying with them in White Oak, so the ones in Mt Airy forest look OK. But, I will be around other parts of the city, and was wondering if there any caches that are good for kids and in interesting areas we would be going to anyways... For example, the the Virtual Cache at the Zoo. Also, I hope to bring several travel bugs to drop, and hope they find their way back to me in California. Thanks! Gregory
  12. Not to railroad the stamp discussion, which is an excellent idea... what do people think about stickers? The circle from the center of a CD label is perfect for my logo. I've been placing these in log books when I remember to bring them. Return labels, etc would be excellent and cheap. Anyone else do this? /Alienpuppy
  13. My Pink Intel Bunnyperson travel bug has gone to New Zealand, hung out for a few months, and has recently been brought back to North America, and is waiting to be placed in a cache in Canada. 7913.22 without the trip back. Not the most, but something I am proud of, since it was my first release, and it actually hung out in New Zealand, instead of being a travel companion. /Alienpuppy
  14. I've used those key rings that have a circle of paper protected with a piece of metal, and a wire loop. I write the name of the bug on the paper circle, and hook the wire loop through the copy tag. Then I strung them all on one of the chains that come with the bugs... Not as organized as your method, but it does keep my tags straight, and in one place. It is useful, because occasionally, some one will need the id to make a log... /Alienpuppy

This is great that we have this global community here. /AlienPuppy

  17. Thanks BigNick! I can wait a few weeks, even a month. I just want to make sure Pink moves along. -Alienpuppy (aka Gregory)

  19. Hi, I'm sure everything is fine, but my travel bug Pink Intel Bunnyperson has been sitting in a cache in New Zealand since January. Could some one stop by the Sharks Tooth Kaikoura cache, and check on the cache and the bug. Neither has been logged since January. I would, but I'm on the opposite side of the planet (USA-California). I'm hoping once the cache is visited, someone will move Pink along. Thanks! Gregory

  21. Here is one cache I found that was looted. The looters left the container and logbook, but took all the stuff. They left a log entry, detailing their exploits. Warning... profanity in the log entry: The vandals left this message. My cache Coastal Limerick Cache had the camera stolen within the first week, but fortunately nothing else really happened, except everyone traded down... I was convinced it was regularly looted, but after looking through the logs, I noticed that people where simply trading down. So, after a few trades, the cache was pretty empty. /AlienPuppy

I've done this as a bug owner on a few occations. Also, if you use IE with the auto-form feature, it will store the last few serial numbers from the "seek" page, if you used that orginally. I've been able to retrieve numbers that way. But, finally, if you "grabbed" it, you should be able to place it when you log the new cache location. At the bottom is a form called "Dropped off a traveller?", and if you have logged the TB as "grabbed", you should be able to drop it here. Hope this helps. /AlienPuppy
  23. quote:Originally posted by TheBeans: We have taken Beanie, our non-fierce- chicken-of-a-pom on all but two cache-hunts that we've been on. She enjoys the walks so much and although she's fairly chicken around other dogs and she hasn't sniffed out a cache box yet, she loves to follow her people into the brush looking for it! So, to give her some honor in this world (because little chicken dogs rarely get any respect!) we created a doggie-themed cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=17734 One of my dogs is named "Bean", but we call him "Beanie" most of the time!. Got this perfect picture of Betsey this weekend when we were all geocaching: /Alienpuppy
