  1. Daniel Oliveira suggested I post my request here. If someone could translate it for me, I would greatly appreciate it!

My name is Duane Bolin, and my Geocaching username is Odyssey Posse. Here is a link to my Geocaching profile: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=29...c2-a1e7f4ed9836

I am writing to ask if you would help me obtain a personal waymark based upon my username. Here is a link to the Waymarking category called "Where's In A Name?": http://www.Waymarking.com/cat/details.aspx...3f&exp=True

That page explains what it is I am trying to do.

My username (Odyssey Posse) converts numerically to the following North latitude line: N 40 17.397. What I need someone in Portugal to do is the following:

Take a photo of your GPSr (with the coords clearly visible) at ANY coord. (choice is yours) that intersects with N 40 17.397. For example, it could be taken at the intersection of N 40 17.397 and ANY longitude. A photo of the surrounding area would be great as well! Then, just email me the photos with any details you want to share about the area.

If this sounds like something you could help me with, let me know! Thanks for your help!

P.S. My son, Seth, is an 11-year-old futbol (yes, we call it "soccer" here in the U.S.) player, and he idolizes Cristiano Ronaldo. He once wrote a school paper about his dream of playing for the Portuguese National Team. It broke my heart to explain to him how his U.S. citizenship would likely impede that dream. :-)

Are the coordinates N 40 17.397 W 008 26.778 good for you? If you want, choose others in a 5km radius and I'll see what I can do.

    Cheers!

  2. Most people who posted here saying "they won't miss it" either never used it or didn't know how to use it.
    I love generalities like this.

    What? Generalities like

It doesn't matter to them. They don't want to adapt, they just want it the way it was so they don't have to think...and no matter what we say, they don't want to listen.

No!!!! How could it be??!?

  3. It doesn't matter to them. They don't want to adapt, they just want it the way it was so they don't have to think...and no matter what we say, they don't want to listen.

    No, it's not like that.

The trouble is that, with the GE KML, we had instantly the latest caches, even if I went to the PC in a cybercafe.

With your method, I would need to carry the latest GPX with me to anywhere I go in order to have the same funtionality.

Now, if you don't like/don't need/won't mess this (or another) funtionality, fine, good for you, I respect that.

But what you're doing is saying that everyone who cared for that are stubborn - or worse. If it's fine by you, that's nice. But you can't say anything helpful, then don't!

  4. I guess your perception is your reality, however since they really don't need an "excuse" to turn a feature on or off, I am sure they did not intend to specifically offend you and since you utilize their system, I think if asked they would describe you as pretty "in the know".

    Yeah, whatever, I'm sold.

Just to make sure nobody was offended at my reaction - it wasn't my intention. I'm still not convinced, but that's my own problem. I just want to be at peace with everyone.

    Peace! :yikes:

  5. Agreed. Why should we help support the use of the servers and license fees. This should be a labor of love with someone else footing the bill.

Don't get me wrong - I feel that GC.com's admins are doing a great job overall and that the monthly fee is a low price to pay to help fund all the time and effort put in this site.

But I got quite upset at the "only 200 people" using one of two features I mainly use and that I believe is used by far more people than that.

Where did they get that number from? The forums? Personally, this is the second time since I began geocaching last year that I come here. I usually go to other forums and rarely come this way (unless I can't find answers to my questions anywhere else).

If only 10 people posted on this forum complaining is because the KML is still working. Let them shut it off and you'll probably see the posts from people complaining falling in like rain in Seattle.

It was a poor excuse, and it upsets me because I feel like someone is trying to pass me off as dumb - which I believe I'm not (though opinions may vary).

    Cheers!

  6. My vote cancels your vote. I haven't used it in a long time. Won't miss it a bit. It is inaccurate anyway, and I only use Google Earth now to drag a GPX file into it and even do that maybe four times a year at the most.

If 10 out of 200 have posted, then that is five percent. If as some say there are more than 200 users, then that only hurts the percentage figures regarding those that care enough to post. It would seem that the lack of interest solidifies the fact that few used this function. When more than 200 post that they are currently using it then that would mean something, but considering that there are over 2 million accounts, the percentages are going to be way low when looking at the big picture.

The KML will simply expire at some point from what I understand. It will work for a while and then just quit.

Well, that about wraps it up.

Personally, the only thing now that makes me being a premium member is the ability of doing PQs. Once I get to the conclusion that I don't need them - or get an alternate way of getting my hands on them - there's no longer any point of paying a monthly fee for GC.com's services.

    Cheers!

  7. I'm sad about seeing the Google Earth kml feature go. As I said in another related post, I can't believe only 200 worldwide used it regularly.

My planning depended on it, and I tried using the embedded map feature on the site, but it isn't as easy to use: I had to manually drag the location to the city where I'm standing (from the US to Wester Europe) and even then, the plugin wouldn't finish parsing the caches.

IMHO, it's a bad bad move, and I'm sorely dissapointed with Groundspeak for killing that superb app.

  8. Only 200 users?

I beg your pardon, but I strongly believe that here in Portugal, an "insignificant" country with "just" 10k inhabitants, there may be more than those pesky 200 kml GE users.

Please bring back that tool - it was my main source of cache finding before going on a hunt. I tried to use that map tool, but, after a long struggle trying to center it on the zone where I'm standing today, the script would never finish parsing caches.
