  1. Anybody using Earthcomber for Palm OS? This looks like it would have alot of potential for geocaching. The basic premise is that you register an id and manage your account from the web. Then when you sync your palm you get maps downloaded (all free). I am just now testing the usefulness of this product, and am wondering if anyone else has tried it. From what I can tell it looks pretty slick. However, there is not alot of doc on using it. here is the link http://www.earthcomber.com
  2. Aristocracker, I also have an Tungsten E. I have an app on my palm called (HintDecoder). It sounds like what you are looking for. I did a google search and can't seem to locate where the download is. You might have better luck. The author is Thomas Chapman (email: tcchap@hotmail.com). Good luck.
  3. I too have a Rino 120 with firmware 3.60. I am glad that the GMRS channels are now opend up to transmit the locations. I don't have another rino to test this though. I am curious if I can use repeaters with this version of firmware. I looked at the manual for the rino 130, but I still don't see where you enable 'Repeater Channel'.
  4. Looks like version 2.50 is now available to download which does include the US Landmark info previously mentioned. I see the Landmarks noted on the map, but I am not sure where their exact location is. Looks like the documentation says that it is located in the upper left hand corner of the text box. This does not seem to accurately describe the location. But hey, this is a GREAT piece of software!
  5. Thanks for checking this. I was about to call them myself. Just curious does anybody have a rino 120 with version 5.x firmware? If you do are there any new functions or features?
  6. Ok I upgraded from 3.40 to 3.50. Didn't notice any new features. Now I look at the Garmin site and there is an update for 5.10. However, if you download it there is a disclaimer that states version 5.0 is required. Where did version 5.0 come from and why is it only for certain 120's?
  7. Anybody updated a Rino 120 to version 3.50 from 3.40? The update description is: "Changes made from version 3.40 to 3.50: Updated to support transfer of proximity waypoints with MapSource" I think I will go ahead and attempt it. Also, I have never updated the POI database for this unit. Does garmin typically update the POI software? Is there a way to tell what version I have (POI) and compare it to what is available from the website? When I hover over the file WindowsXP reports that it is version 2.11.15.0 with a date of 4/20/2004. This date is after the date when I purchased the unit.
  8. Ditto... Even if you are not using the radio, it is nice to hear an alert when you are approaching your waypoint. This comes in handy when you are driving to your destination and following a route or a track. Also, I like the quad-helix over the patch antenae. Very pleased with my 120.
  9. Does that mean that whenever I change the batteries in my Garmin Rino I should go through the setup process to reacquire the alamanac? I haven't been, but maybe I would get better accuracy if I did.
  10. Thanks Maeglin! I will reinitialize when I am in a more open area. I assume that all I need to do is go to the Satellite page and select "New Location".
  11. I am a new user of a RINO 120. I am not sure if it is performing at its best. In other words, is it possible that when I initialized it for the first time it was not under the best circumstances. For example, after receiving the unit from ebay I quickly went outside my workplace to initialize it which is surrounded by many buildings . Should I try to reset the unit and initialize it in a better environment?
  12. Thanks. I looked for this on the web and never found anything close. Thanks for posting the info. After reading the discaimers I probably won't attempt any of these commands. However, it is nice to know how to reset the unit.
  13. I ran accross a listing on ebay where the seller was selling a car adapter for the Garmin RINO 110/120 units. To further entice potential buyers, the seller was also claming that instructions for accessing hidden screens (eg, a screen that displayed temperature) would be included for the winning bidder. Well, that prompted me to wonder what these hidden features were. Does anybody know the magical combination of key pressings one needs to invoke to reveal these undocumented screens for a RINO 120?
  14. What a deal! I would like to know the sellers name. I won't be buying until after Christmas, so they might not be available then, but just in case.
  15. I agree with others in this discussion. The old magnetic, and reliable compass is a must. I have yet to purchase a GPS (intend to buy a Garmin Rino 120 after the holidays). But that hasn't prevented me from experiencing the fun of geocaching. I have found that by using the online maps and a lensatic compass, I can pinpoint the location of the cache. This technique, (which applies basic map/compass navigation skills) limits the caches one can seek. As long as the cache is placed in relation to two key features that are on a map and are not obstructed from view it is fairly easy to locate the location. Actually, I would be interested if anyone is aware of some caches that lend themselves to map/compass skills as opposed to GPS's. Don't misunderstand me, I am not promoting the elimination of GPS's, just believe it is nice to keep the old map/compass skills alive.
  16. I see where Cobra has come out with two new GPS's (GPS 100 and GPS 500), and another model to be released in the future (GPS 1000). It looks like the GPS 100 might be similar to a Garmin eTrex, and the GPS 500 might be similar to the eTrex Venture, and it sounds like the GPS 1000 (yet to be released) might be comparable to the Garmin Legend. Does anyone have any experience with either the Cobra GPS 100 or 500? Following is a link about the Cobra GPS's http://www.cobra.com I haven't purchased a GPS unit yet, and had been looking at the Garmin models (rino 120, eTrex Vista, or the eTrex Legend). However, I think that maybe I should give Cobra a chance. I have always liked their CB's and FRS radios.
