  1. Was actually in maine on monday and went to cabelas. They were out of stock on pn-60. Got on the website tonight and customer service agent waived shipping costs. I had 300.00 in gift cards. Cabelas has a 'save 20.00 on 150.00 purchase'. That with the delorme rebate of 50.00 will make my pn-60 cost me 30.00. NEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hud
  2. To start off, I was in Maine yesterday and met a customer right at the Delorme building exit off of I-95. I went in and bought a spiral bound atlas. Looked at the software for the pn-60, NEAT!!! My question is... Can you use your laptop as the screen for a pn-60. Bascially, if I have a mount for my laptop in the truck, can the gps talk back to the laptop and display the information? Since the 60 has a small screen I thought thismight be kind of cool. I know thay offer the small gps units to plug into the laptop, but I thought this might just save some $$$. Don't know why I didn't ask when I as at Delorme. Thanks Hud
  3. I am not well versed in techno jargon but I think the pixels refers to the resolution that the screen is capable of... Eash of those numbers , 160x240, etc, is the number of pixels per inch or some such thing. Please correct me if I am wrong, It is more than possible that I am. Hud
  4. does the oregon have a screen lock or such so that when carried in a pocket or bag the buttons are disabled. Ifigure with the touch screen that any number of actions on the screen might take place if the screen is touched. Thanks Hud
  5. I'd like to hear yours please... Hud
  6. oregon 450t or delorme pn-60 if the money is the same??? Which one? Hud

  8. Minor points of information: Garmin's nuMap subscription https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=33379 is $120 but that's a lifetime susbscription, not a one-off or yearly subscription. Typically map updates come out quarterly. Pay once, upgrade your maps forever. Garmin's Birdseye imagery subscription is $30/year, same as DeLorme -- but Garmin's coverage is international and DeLorme's isn't (yet). Now to ignore the troll and bring the map question back to the OP's quest: Garmin and DeLorme have different pricing models for their map products and considerable difference in map availability, making it hard to compare them. So I'll try anyhow... In my opinion: Out of the box for a U.S. user, the advantage is to DeLorme -- they give you everything you need to start in one package at one price. BUT down the road? Advantage Garmin. Lifetime map updates available for a fixed price, huge availability of custom maps, ability to create your own or download from many commercial sources as well as free "crowd-sourced" libraries (gpsfiledepot being the best example of the latter). International maps are available both for $ from Garmin and free from gpsfiledepot et al. DeLorme map updates come out sort of yearly and basically involve buying a complete new software package if you want it (Topo 9 is $99 MSRP, $60 upgrade for folks with prior version). You can create your own maps if you buy another program from DeLorme (XMap, versions starting at $100) and there are no public repositories of crowd-sourced maps -- because DeLorme's licensing doesn't allow for it. International maps (outside of North America) are not available but promised to be coming real soon now, pricing not known yet. I need more coffee Stuff like this is what really makes me a bit nervous about buying a unit. THe stuff that you need down the road, how much will it cost, will it even be available???? Service after the sale is what I want just as much as a I would like a quality gps unit. Hud
  9. Please elaborate on the issues that I may have with delorme. Thank you Hud
  10. I didn't think the 60csx was a true paperless unit. Hud
  11. pn 40 is 230.00 and pn 60 is 350.00 at amazon... Which one do I get. Tell me now!!!!!!!!!!!! Hud
  12. The map update, batteries and chargers, not to mention the unit itself... What does it really cost to get e new setup to go geocaching with modern paperless equipment? Thanks Hud
  13. After deciding I could add a few bucks to my budget it looks like I can get pn-60 or a garmin 62 for 330-350.00 This is not easy I appreciate all the replies. Hud
  14. Really having a hard time now deicding between colorado 400i or delorme pn 40... What should push me over the edge?? Thanks Hud
  15. held the delorme 40 at bass pro today. I like it. 299 then a 50.00 rebate. amazon is 230.00. They had one 60csx for the 199.00 price folks have mentioned. I think if I was gonna beat it to pieces I would get the 60. RIght now I think I like the paperless thing better though. I appreciate the replies more than you know. Soooooo helpful for a newb. One reply menitoned price point. I just don't think I need to spend more than 200-250 to get a nice unit that will take care of my needs. Hud
  16. I am still trying to get up to speed on certain aspects of these devices... How many caches can each of these machines hold?? First with on board memory and then with the biggest card that the device can support. From delorme site... 'Extensive On-Device Memory 500 MB of available internal flash memory in addition to the pre-loaded world base map. Holds up to ten tracks (10,000 points per track); 1,000 user-defined waypoints; and 50 routes. SD slot also available.' What is a track, I think a waypoint is like your own 'turn' or 'poi', what is a route. How does all of this fit into the memory available in the device for paperless cacheing?? Thank you Hud
  17. does the delorme allow you to download caches in your area off of the net easily?? after doing a little more looking I think I like the delorme also. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.
  18. I like paperless in one unit with the delorme and colorado. 60csx is sooooo poplular. Can I go wrong with any of these??? Colorado in the sub 200.00 price range now on amazon. Thanks for any advice. I wish I was buying a nailgun or tractor... I would know what I was talking about. Hud
  19. Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it.
  20. There is a new garmin gps 60 on my local c-list for 50.00. Can you recommend this unit for first timers? Is this unit capable of paperless geocaching? Thanks a lot!!
  21. Ain't that the truth????????????? Folks love to tell about the great deals but they will take where they actually got it to the grave.
  22. I have been looking at gps units for fun and on the road. Road use will be limited, probably three times a year. I like gadgets, I am a contractor and buy products that make me money. Therefore, I have no issues spending more than what is needed to get some added features. I have only been able to put my hands on the vista and legend units. Gander Mountain in my area had them on display but none of 15 or so units displayed had batteries or would run demos, do they really want to sell items??????? That is for another thread. I like the price of vistas and legends but I like some features of the colorado. Full size memory card in the colorado is one. The paperless thing is something I can't comment on because I have not geocached with paper yet. Maps seem to be an inevitable cost for any unit. Vista hcx can be had for about 225.00 at amazon, legend hcx 195.00, 400t colorado 480.00. If I am willing to go for a model 60 I think I would just get a colorado. 60 csx 299.00. The rei deal on the vista is good but after shipping and tax it is not a stellar deal so I am not worrying about missing that one. That is all for now... I can pick up a basic legend for 105.00 brand new. I think I would like the 'bling' of the color screen and such though so I figure the hcx legend will be the 'lowest' model I would consider. I also wanted to ask if there are any of the 'car versions' that are suitable for handheld operation. I see a fiar amount of refernece to the nuvi's. Thanks for any help I appreciate the fact that folks on this site seem willing to answer the same questions over and over and over and over... Hud
