  1. Thanks! I was looking around $400 or less if possible. I would just like something that does both, without the expense of having to purchase both, and having to carry two pieces. It's been a while since I've even looked at any of them, so I thought I would ask....I knew there would be people out there with the knowledge :-) Do all of the versions of the Colorado/Oregon and Dakota do this? Do any of you know? I just wonder, because I'm seeing lots of version. Thanks so much!
  2. Hi everyone, I am having problems with my current GPS, and in addition, when I got a new VISTA computer (UGH) My pocket PC is no good anymore. So rather than purchasing TWO new pieces of equipment, is there a GPS out there, that you can upload GPX files to, and also read the description/clues etc for a cache? The only thing I need either for is geocaching, that's it. Any suggestions?
  3. Does this happen very often? I am in a situation right now, where I have 795 finds (as of today) but it is showing only 765. It isn't a matter of the count not being refreshed, it is a matter of 30 cache finds not registering. The logs are still there, were never deleted, but are simply not being counted. They were counted, but then one day they suddenly weren't (.....I posted about this in another thread.) A friend had the same thing happen, only he is down 87 finds. I ran a pocket query of all my finds to see which ones were showing up, and found some of the uncounted ones. but since I have been doing this for a few years, and don't remember EVERY SINGLE cache, I can't really tell which other ones I am missing. ....or did you mean they were deleted by the cache owner and not the "system"? <sigh> Can you tell this is really bugging me?
  4. No, this number simply dropped. I had 786 finds. 2 weeks later I suddenly have only 756. These were all legitimate finds, nothing was deleted. I did discover last night, that one unique cache I found a couple years ago has issues. This cache was called "5 times your money." When you found it, you were actually supposed to log it 5 times, and get 5 smileys for it. I had logged all 5. Last night as I was going through all of my finds, I discovered that only 2 of them were showing. I looked at the cache page, and all 5 logs were there, but yet only 2 were on the "All Caches Found" page. That would explain three of the missing "finds" but there are still 27 more that are unaccounted for. That unique cache was the only "multiple" I had done. So there must be more of them that simply aren't getting counted, even though I logged them, and the logs are on the cache pages. I don't know. I hope it is just a glitch, and that I get the 30 smileys back, as well as my friend get his 87 back.
  5. I have been geocaching for a few years now, and the other day I got on to log some finds from the weekend. I recently started putting "Find # ___" at the end of each post, simply to keep track of them. Well, I was at 786. But when I logged in, suddenly I was only at 756. It was off by 30 finds. Another geocacher I know who has found way more than I have, is also down by 87 finds, so I'm not the only one. Anyone know what the deal is? How could finds simply vanish? 30 of them just "poofed" into thin air?
  6. OH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally visiting the Chicago area for the first time in years, and was so excited to get that APE cache. That stinks! <sigh>
  7. I just sat here and read over all the posts again, and frankly I am very disappointed in some of my fellow Geocachers. This guy posted on here, excited about his son's accomplishment, and has been harped on from every angle....from political angles to nit-picking the coin. All I can say is shame, shame. I expected more out of you all. Once again, Taliban Hunter....you should be VERY PROUD of your son! Not many people EVER have the opportunity to meet the president as an adult, yet alone as a young man!
  8. P.S. A while back, before all of the new coins were so readily available, you could take any item and after purchasing a TB tag, engrave that tag's number onto an object to create your own personal TB/Coin. I know many people did that because they wanted unique TBs, and that was the only way to really do it and have it trackable. At least at that time.
  9. I utilize Photoshop everyday in my work and it is quite easy to tell that the tracking number is not originally part of the coin. The size proportion is wrong. The words are skewed. The color around the tracking number is off and the texture does not match. Then to add to it the icon is from the Spinning geocoin. It is great you son did meet the President but what is up with this coin? I have seen one of these coins in person, and the size/proportion of the tracking number is just fine, if you understand that these coins are HUGE! Seriously, they are nothing like any other coin you haved seen. They are about the size of a large man's palm. I saw one at an event about a year ago. No need to cast any sort of shadow of doubt.
  10. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To receive an award from the POTUS, no matter what the affiliation of the giver or receiver, is a great honor!! Especially to a young man like your son! Give your son our most sincere congratulations!!!
  11. A friend of mine has his geocaching name as his license plate "number" and has a TB tag bolted to his plate. I would like to get one, but not sure how I could make my name recognizable.....too long But I am getting some ideas from this thread! LOL
  12. I have a Dell Pocket PC, and I used the GPXSonar, and it works great for me! the only thing that isn't accurate is the "distance" category, but since I carry a GPSr...I don't need that feature I love going paperless! As a matter of fact, my MIL just ordered her own "hardware" so she could go paperless too
  13. Ahh...mine was yesterday....a spur of the moment thing. You can read it here: Bonnet's Revenge The next log is the FTF for that cache
  14. We just started releasing some, and the first one was a kiowa helicopter with the chain strung through the windows (stabbed hole in them with a sharp tool). The next 4 are very simple ones, and have been released in the last 24 hours. All four are wood blocks that I burned the names into, drilled a hole through them, and attached the tag with a split ring (Keychain ring). Thought the ring would be stronger than the chain, just in case. We also released 3 coins today. So with these 8, we will sit back and watch a little before releasing some more. There are some good ideas in the Longevity thread...
  15. Each of our 3 children are going to have their own TB's to put out. They are a block of wood with "Jen's Very Own TB" Burned into it....each one having their own name. The block of wood is about 3" by 3/4" by 3/4" and has a hole drilled through the end to attach the tag. I think this will work :-)
  16. I have the Canon PowerShot A300 (3.2 Megapixel). I love it, it has zoom, although it is digital zoom and not optical zoom, but it takes great pictures. I have had it since this past October, and am very happy with it. It can even do the "mini-movies" with sound and all. Only paid $198 for it. I think I got a good deal.
  17. All very good ideas! I have only released one so far, but have 4 more en route, as well as a couple coins...... Will be much more creative and careful with the next ones! Thanks for the ideas~!
  18. I think it is a nice idea. Though, when I put out my own TB, I did start it out in a bag, with the sheet, but really don't expect that sheet to last forever. It is just a piece of paper, and isn't very durable. When checking a site and preparing to go on a hunt--if I see there is at TB there, I will read its mission before even going to the cache. But if I find a TB and hadn't read its mission yet, I will take it home and look it up before placing it in another cache. Sometimes they request photos in various locations and such. I would like to be able to send the owner back some pictures of the TB in interesting places before sending it on its way
  19. Here is my log from Doug's Bug Cache June 17 by SmithMountainExplorers (21 found) [This one was a simple find, BUT it was rather disasterous--or should we say adventurous? Parking on the side of the road, nearly got stuck in the ditch--couldn't see how deep it was as the grass was so tall! Sat teetering on 2 tires for a moment--near panic attack!--but was able to get out! Then daughter slammed finger in the door....the drama! She'll lose that fingernail. But still she wanted to go. Found it--left VW Bug toy, took Spidey toy, signed the log. As we were leaving, youngest son managed to walk into the rear end of the car and gave himself a black eye! LOL Then picked up some cold sodas from the nearby grocery store...it was STILL a REALLY HOT DAY! But not too buggy and a good day to geocache! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Poor kids--They have gotten hurt---I have just had the ususal ticks, mud, and scratches from bushwacking.
  20. Wow! Some of these are so SNEAKY! and so cool! LOL We have just gotten started hiding our own caches...one traditional, and one micro, with another micro awaiting approval right now. I have gotten some great ideas from this thread, and can't wait to put out my next "traditional" one! <insert wicked laugh here>
  21. Well..this is post #3. I enjoy reading the threads, but just don't reply often. I have found 23 caches. We are still new to it
  22. Mine was made by a beaver too. Found it a couple years ago at a pond nearby, one day when we took the kids fishing. I recently added the geocaching metal plate to it.
  23. I am another Female Geocacher. I enjoy hiking, and hike about 30-50 miles a week. Discovered Geocaching, and now have my whole family doing it. After the first trip, taking the kids, Hubby turned to the kids and said "see what a cool mom you have? How many other moms would do cool stuff like geocaching?" That's me...the cool mom
