  1. It is really all about time management. Whether it is Palm vs PPC or Windows vs Mac, if a programmer has a good market and a developing product, it is hard to justify spending the time to learn a new language (as similar as it may be) when the time could be better spent improving the current product. When you look at the market share of Windows to Mac, is it hard to see why the focus is on Windows? Palm vs PPC is a little different. Certainly Palm has held a great market share, but as the military and government move away from Palms, I believe this will change as well.
  2. Hmmm, a TB that moves itself. Kinda defeats the purpose, no? Although, attached to the right person, you could get some serious miles on one.
  3. I assume you don't mean STRAG as in STRING BAG.
  4. I had one go missing for over a year, then it suddenly reappeared. You can never tell with these things. I would give it a week for them to get posted.
  5. After looking at the pics, I would have to say MAYBE a 2.5, but no more. (Granted, I haven't been there.)
  6. Presentation is everything. Examples of the same cache: 1. A short walk along a sidewalk in a small park near some large trees. 2. The cache is located approximately 500 feet from the safety of the parking lot. Be careful when exiting vehicle due to the proximity of potential moving vehicles. There is a significant elevation change (~ 6 inches) to the main trail. While the terrain is mostly sidewalk, many slabs are cracked or not perfectly even. Children or domestic animal playing nearby may endanger visitors due to inattention. The groomed appearance of the area can be misleading. Stay on the path as sprinkler heads can be a trip hazard. During storms, large limbs have been known to fall from trees without warning. Kinda makes a huge difference, doesn't it?
  7. Bad people don't hate micros. ALL people hate micros. Well, okay, except for those that love micros, because you either love them or hate them. Unless, of course, you are indifferent. And if you don't care, then why should we? But, who cares that ...... oh, sorry. What was the topic again?
  8. Yes, but why didn't you post a "Link" vice a "Link?"? It makes you look like you don't know where you are going.
  9. I personally like the military-style boots. I wore Bates Tactical boots in a 100+ degree engineroom for over a dozen years and never had an issue. They have never let me down. Hunting or pounding metal deck, I have always found them comfortable.
  10. I have a Dell Axim x50v with CF GPS, but my friend has a 4705 and loves it. I think the screen is a bit sharper on the iPaq than on the Dell. I love mine just the same, though. I love using it with my Memory-Map software. Aerial photos are just awesome.
  11. I know Maptech has maps of Baghdad and some of the other major cites.
  12. Very good explaination. Yes, the rifle is for polar bears (mostly). Down south, it would be for sharks at the swim call and there would be a duty diver standing by (not necessary at the pole!). It is all about safety.
  13. What are the Poles doing in Canada anyway?!? Send them back to Poland where they belong! (Or, you can send 'em down to the US as long as they bring their sausage along!)
  14. Isn't the location more important than what you find there? I think that if you have a well placed cache, the hunter should go away enjoying the experience even if he/she doesn't find it.
  15. STOP THE PRESSES!!! Could it be that the press was wrong? Could it be that the cache did not say "explosives" on it? Could it be that is was clearly marked as a GeoCache? Having closely followed the events in South Carolina over the cemetery caches, I find it hard to believe that the press could have misrepresented this event. (*DRIPPING WITH SARCASM*) Seriously, though, there is nothing wrong ammo boxes. Clearly label them. Place them in an obscure locations. (Not next to a bridge or public building.) But, I see no reason to stop using them. I better stop before I get up on my soap box again. The guy next door is NOT out to blow you up. Thirty years ago there was the (rare) psycho out there blowing up things, but if we saw something in the woods and it looked like an ammo box, we wouldn't have thought twice about opening it. Get over it!
  16. Along with the Garmin iQue, the Navman PiN and the Mitac Mio are almost identical. All have integrated GPSrs.
  17. I have done a similar project with the scouts in this area. I talk to them about navigation in general (such as use of sextants and compasses). Explain a bit about the GPS concept and how the satellites work. Then, we talk about GPS units and how they are used. I always bring a selection of GPSrs, so keeping their interest has not been a problem.
  18. I would guess that you don't read the forums much, but I know better. I use Dell Axims for caching (and many other things). I use either a CF GPSr or Bluetooth. I put them in an Aquapac (which allows me to use the screen through the bag). I use them sailing (if you don't get wet sailing, you ain't really sailing), hiking, and hunting. I have yet to have one get wet, dirty, dinged or otherwise damaged. (Knock on wood!) I have an Otterbox, too. It is sort of like a mini-safe for a PDA, but I hardly use it because it is overkill. A little common sense goes a long way with Pocket PCs or any other electronic device. Even my kids use my PPCs quite a bit. They are still alive and well (and so are the PPCs!).
  19. It is really a matter of where he "marked" his coordinates. If this information was not taken off the same GPS unit, then the coordinates he "entered" may indeed be off due to the datum.
  20. One way would be to use a program like Memory-Map Navigator to import the data from the GPS. You can then print your routes, tracks, waypoints, even text notes on the map. You will need to get maps from either Memory-Map or a variety of other companies. If you get the Discoverer package, it comes with all the maps for a given state. I know Garmin has software which will allow you to print data from the GPS as well. Most any mapping software will allow you to import information from a Garmin and print it. There is not way to print directly from the GPS.
  21. I know the Lowrance iFinder Pro and H2O have memory card slots. I have used them with Memory-Map Navigator to send data to the unit. It requires sending a USR file to the card (or importing from the card). The cards are a bit awkward, as they are located in the battery compartment and not easy to remove. Still, it is better than not having one. As far as the proprietary cards from Lowrance, I could not tell you. I know they have MapCreate software that works to get your maps / data onto the cards. Sorry, that is about all I know.
  22. Yes, I am afraid I have fallen victim to the plant. I have a cache that apparently has been overrun. When I checked it a few months ago, it was snowy and barren in the area. Now I am told that poison ivy has encroached. Time to move it, I guess. I will be sure to scrub the ammo box before replacing.
  23. Add me to the list. DC 2804 and I have cracks on one lower and two middle screws. Only had this a few months.
  24. I would echo the support for Mapopolis. I use it quite a bit. However, do you plan on doing urban caches or hitting the trails to find your caches? Most of the street mapping software does nothing for you once you leave the road. I use Memory-Map Navigator (similar to Fugawi, but a more flexible program). It uses topo maps and aerial photos for off-road navigation. It does not do turn-by-turn directions like street navigation software, however.
