  1. I think the TB sounds like a wonderful idea (and one more conversation piece for the tavern)!
  2. What a wonderful idea. I think I will have to work on one.
  3. I would have to second the advice on the eTrex yellow. Not a high end model by any measure, but a very good basic unit and has some flexibility for later use.
  4. Did you really use "normal" and "geocacher" in the same sentence? Sounds like a wonderful idea. Although I haven't really placed one yet, I like the idea of themed caches.
  5. I am glad I don't live in that area. I know we don't have hundreds of caches right in my neighborhood, but we do alright for a rural area. With the activity on this site, I would hardly say this is a dying interest.
  6. Can't a man bathe in peace? What?!? You never saw a bath robe before? I suppose you didn't know about the hot spring on the other side of the hill, either?
  7. The message you are getting is because programs which were written for older PDAs may not be compatible with the new operating system since the program is not specifically "flagged" for the new operating system. Although there are occasional problems, in most cases this is just a warning and the software runs just fine.
  8. To the best of my knowledge, no, this is not possible. You can use the GPS (with proper hookup) to send data to the PDA, but it will not work the other way.
  9. Great job, Ibycus. I wish someone had shown the same level of concern for Cap'n Joe before he went MIA.
  10. As a military man and avid hunter, I have to say I think it is not the best choice. Not that I think we should censor TBs, but some people are leary enough about opening up this box of goodies when others may be nearby watching. The thought that someone might see them "take a gun out of the box" might cause some serious issues with certain people. That said, you can't please all of the people all of the time and you can't please some of the people ANY of the time.
  11. Sounds like a great idea (unless the TB goes on a 'round the world tour!). I like the idea of more than one key. Makes it less likely that the cache will not be made useless by one missing TB. Edit: That's what I get for being interrupted in the middle of a post. Thanks, Markwell, for beating me to the punch.
  12. And here I thought my dog was just rude. I didn't realize he was in the TB business! That is just too funny. I hope someone doesn't throw it away by accident. (Not that the tag shouldn't give it away.)
  13. Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose? You know, get out, walk a bit and see the sights? It would be fun to monitor your caches, though. Maybe dive bomb a few muggles!
  14. I agree. I don't consider a DNF a failure. It is just the first attempt at a success. I posted a DNF recently that (in warm weather) would certainly have been a hide, but the drifted snow made it just impossible to get an idea of where it might be hidden. We will be back in a few days, though, and the DNF will still be there after we post our find.
  15. Not to break up the discussion, but I know a group of young ladies who would not only take offense the the idea they should not be caching alone, but would put a serious hurting on anyone who tried to interrupt them in the process. And, along with that, I know a few guys who shouldn't be out in the woods by themselves. Being smart is a great idea and the safety rules should apply regardless of age, gender, etc. Let someone know where you are going, when you will be back and how you can be reached. Best of all, USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM. It makes it more fun anyway.
  16. Wally World has hunter orange match holders. They are a bit larger than a film canister and have a rubber seal in them. They work great (although they stand out due to the color).
  17. Jeremy would be the guy to contact. He can certainly tell you what he would like to see in a release.
  18. Even though the frequencies are so different, the problem with the EMI is that the field is so large around some of those lines and the interference wreaks havoc on the internals of the GPS, not just the incoming signal. If you measure the field, it seems fairly insignificant, but in such close proximity and with a sensitive device like a GPSr, it will have an impact. I would just note in the cache description that the coordinates may be suspect due to this issue.
  19. I, too, have a Dell Axim x50v. I love it because it has it all....WiFi, Bluetooth, CF slot, SD slot, plus a VGA screen. Regarding the rain, Aquapac makes very nice waterproof bags that allow you to use the PPC right through the bag membrane, so you don't even have to take it out. We use them sailing and you can through the PPC overboard, turn around and come back and get it. (Yes, it floats, too!)
  20. Hello?!? *echo* Is anyone here? *echo* What did I do? *echo*
  21. I understand taking this all into consideration, but sometimes it is just the risk you take. I wanted to place a Virtual because it was at THE most active spot in our little town. There are shops and stores all around the little park. The Virtual was denied, so I made it a micro. After careful consideration, it is certainly possible to retrieve the cache without looking obvious, but not easy. Still, the challenge is part of the game. ...and if it gets muggled, I am out a magnetic key holder. Oh, well.
  22. This is really the key. Get a good reading, then approach the spot from a couple angles to narrow it down. Having more than one GPS helps, too. I usually have at least two (one for me and one for the kids).
  23. I used to be a Navy Nuke. We had a guy who went into town with a set of anti-contamination clothing (canary suit) on. That went over like a fart in church! CO didn't think it was so funny and he got WAY more attention than you would ever want.
  24. Well, this topic has made the rounds before, but: - a good flashlight - spare batteries - several baggies of different sizes - good walking stick / hiking staff (to poke into places you don't want to put a hand) - spare log book (incase I encounter a full one) - pencil sharpener vice a knife (it does a better job) - a friend (always need one of these, but I don't put it in my bag)
  25. That is nothing. I can get DOQQs (digital orthographic quarter quads) for free from the NY GIS site (at one foot resolution). I download them, calibrate them and put them into my Memory-Map software. Then, I can carry them around in the field. Beats the heck out of Mapsource or Mapsend. They are about four times the resolution of the ones on Google maps. (A rough guess.)
