  1. Yup, am a lurker mostly. Have too many opinions to type them all here
  2. Popular to leave. Unpopular to take. That's why you see so many of 'em. Nobody takes them out of caches, because nobody wants 'em. Am I going to drop somebody else's signature item in the next cache I visit? Nooooo. If I pick it up, it must because I want to take it and keep it - which happens roughly never. I know of lots of people who collect signature items, so to call it "unpopular" and say that "nobody wants 'em" is wildly inaccurate. Some people have even created online galleries of the sig items they've collected. I will have to heartily agree. I do enjoy taking signature cards and other items and will often move them to other caches. I've kept a large collection of cards with geocachers handles on them. I attache magnets to them and have many of them attached to my storage cabinets. Not odd at all. As always, your mileage may vary. If you don't collect them, don't take them. Wooden nickels, business cards, customized poker chips are all common trade items. I personally don't care for the marbles, golf balls and polished rocks I find. Customize something that shows YOUR personality or creativity. Good idea to make it water resistant if not waterproof. Magnets are a good thing to use.
  3. Thanks for all you've done Dot ! Has it really been 5yrs already ? Been alot of water over the bridge since then. Congrats on a job well done !
  4. You may want to look up the nuvi topic thread. There are some great helps out there. As other have stated, the nuvi isn't made to Geocache, but you CAN. One thing you may want to do is option it for "Off Road" and "Pedestrian" and that should help some. Also, there is a satelitte page from the main menu, push and hold on the top left where the satellite bars are, this should get you a page that gives you actual coordinates. Moving N-S and E-W until the nuvi reads the same coords as the cache will get you pretty close. Read the cache page, unless the difficulty is way up there, hidden deviously or a puzzle cache, you should locate the cache quickly. Try the 1.5/1.5 D/T caches and look for either small or regular size containers to start out with.
  5. Thanks for posting that. It worked. I looked all over for the activation code and found the reference here to Idaho Micro Geocoin update.... Thanks again, happy happy, joy joy ! DMflyer Gate City, VA
  6. What?, ME make a backup ? or is it WHAT backup ?
  7. I'll have to agree with you KK on this one. The account was created back in January, has recently been seen as a non-validated Premium Member and now is a Premium Member. Hmmm. Current cache pages (that you own) in the area that are MOC are able to log on their "audit trail" the viewing of the cache page, by time/date stamp and by cacher. Merely view a cache page multiple times is not a problem. The account has: 0 finds 0 hides 0 trackables 0 gallery pics 0 forum posts Soooo.... Why create a Premium Account as a "ghost" ?? Viewing Members Only caches pages ? No, they can do that with their OTHER account ! Watching the Forum posts, but not posting ? no, reading Forum posts leaves no trails. What would be the purpose of creating such an account? being anonymous I'd guess. WHY would Groundspeak allow someone to pay as a premium member ? My guess is for the $$$ and thats the bottom line. Very few things will get an account on Groundspeak deleted or locked, they don't want to lose the $$$
  8. I have one of the older Greenman coins. I think it goes back to 2001 mintingl. Not sure, but its not trackable.
  9. The last event I went to there were several large coin collections there. I was encouraged by the event organizer to make a list of tracking numbers of all the coins I brought. He actually took my coins and made up a full 30 copies of the tracking numbers list for me (Thanks WCNUT!) Anyone who came and looked at the sheets (clear plastic double sided) that I had the coins in, I gave them a paper copied list of all the tracking numbers. I did find out that not all who came to the event (some 150 - 200 people) luckily didn't get or want to log the coins. I'm always glad to share the list of tracking numbers with anyone I meet on the trail or out and about.
  10. Just received my coins today. Was not finding the activation code, but after reading a few messages HERE, I found it ! The slip of paper that has the Tracking number visible through the plastic envelope had the activation number on the BACK side of it !
  11. Thanks for putting the card together. I think I'll put a link to the card on my profile page. LOTS of folks never make it into these forums (me included) but hopefully will catch the link on my profile page. How about an image and some HTML to go with it so it could be quickly cut/ pasted to cache pages, profile pages or travel bug pages ? That would expand the visibility of the link to the card.
  12. Belated congrats from "Da Flyer" too ! We gotta pick some good ones for my upcoming 1500 milestone. Maybe finish Lost Cove by then ? Or High Water ?
  13. Hehehe Just saw this post. Yeah I'm here. Make my way up to E.KY on occasion. Have done caches up in Pikeville, Paintsville and all the way up to Ashland, KY and into WV and OH from there. Loved your Bad Branch Falls Earthcache. Awesome hike and falls. Need more waterfall caches !!
  14. I use GSAK every day and LOVE it ! Thanks for all the work you've done ! An option I'd really like to see to add for future use: Centerpoint: Grab from GPS Currently there are: Home Current Waypoint Post Code Locations... Show Current on Mapquest How about adding one like this: Capture from GPS (assumes GPS is ON and set correctly) =================================== Another option I'd really like to see is: Waypoint > Add Currently there are three buttons at the bottom: OK Cancel Help When I am connected to gc.om and want to add a cache, Use the ADD option when I'm out placing a cache. It sure would be handy to have a SUBMIT button and have GSAK populate all the fields on GC.COM when adding a cache. Currently I use the Copy/Past option and flip back and forth between GSAK and GC.COM to submit the cache listing.
  15. Black bear. While out on the trail towards a cache in North Carolina, I saw plenty of signs of flattened grass. Grass was knee high or higher. Quietly I went down the trail. Then I heard the brush crashing and stopped dead in my tracks. Thats when I saw the bear cub scamper up a tree. The other one, making alot of noise headed up the hill, along with momma. She snorted, liked "come on, cub, lets get moving" and the one I snapped the picture of up the tree came down and followed momma. Never saw momma, never saw the 2nd cub.
  16. I have set up a database for me, and one for my wife. We both have individual GC.COM ID# - I've gotten GSAK to save them as separate databases. THe problem is I don't seem to be able to keep my FINDS totals and her FIND totals separate. Any help from anyone using multiple users and multiple databases with GSAK? I had thought maybe I'd have to install a whole new GSAK with Options set for her and her own database. Is that necessary ?
  17. It was quite the adventure. The morning (from 8:30am until 11:00) was spent trying to find access to the National Forest land. We tried several landowners. The very last man we talked to, Mr. Tolley I think? pulled out a plat map of land that he owned and showed us on it where his land borders National Forest land. Then he proceeded to tell us where we could get access to National Forest land without crossing his land. Nice, but subtle way of telling us, No you can't cross my property. He was nice and must have asked us 3 times, "And WHY do you want to go up there?" Once we found the Border markers, painted red rock and red painted bands on trees, the rest was pure adventure. The first .3 miles was straight up hill, but once on top the ridgeline, the last 2miles was all fairly easy hiking. The original 5gal bucket was found, wet and soggy inside, with only a few trade items salvable. Replaced 5gal bucket with 50cal ammo box, with new logbook and trade items. If you do this one, please bring quality trade items to give others incentive to make the long hike.
  18. You can use these tags: %gcid %Name The name of the individual would be: %By I just found the Special Tags in the Help file or I would have been asking the same question or one similar. I wanted the GCid to be sent to the comment field when I send a waypoint to the GPS. I got it now with %gcid %Name by %By
  19. You got the idea. From .001 to .010 is 10x or 10 times. You can also use mapping software to have it tell you the distance. You can also use projection to reverse the .1 mi to decimal equivalents. RE: N xx 31.469 W xx 31.267 to go .1 mi directly north: N xx 31.556 would be .087 = .1 mi = 528 ft, or about 6.06 ft per .001 on the coordinates. .001 = 6.06ft .010 = 60.6ft .100 = 606ft ...so a .1 on the decimal portion of the coordinates is a little further than .1 miles.
  20. I read this entire thread, had to laugh a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed the frustration and confusion that is displayed. "teach them correct principles and let them govern themselves" I think gc.com DOES have sufficient guidelines for the EXTREME caches. As long as they fall within these guidelines, then I see no reason for them to NOT be approved. As stated several times, the INDIVIDUAL is responsible for their own actions. There are cliffs, steep drop offs, lots and lots of possible places to get hurt and even killed. If you want to SEEK the 5/5 caches, you gotta be willing to take the RISK. If it seems the RISK is too high, back off and regroup. It is very difficult if not impossible to LEGISLATE, MANDATE or REGULATE any kind of common sense. Each attempt at a 5/5 can result in death or serious injury. Do we allow 5/5 caches ? Sure, just with the proper precautions and with the legal liabilities waived. To protect someone else from their own decisions or actions is impossible. We cannot protect idiots from themselves. As for the comments about teenagers going off and doing something that might get them killed or injured, they don't need a gc.com listing to do that, they are very capable of finding and even seeking those obviously dangerous places to get themselves in trouble - all on their own. ...and might I add, many adults too... So who's liable ? If you agree to the conditions stated on a cache page... "Note:To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer. " http://www.geocaching.com/about/disclaimer.aspx "Geocaching, hiking, backpacking and other outdoor activities involve risk to both persons and property. There are many variables including, but not limited to, weather, fitness level, terrain features and outdoor experience, that must be considered prior to seeking or placing a Cache. Be prepared for your journey and be sure to check the current weather and conditions before heading outdoors. Always exercise common sense and caution." "Cache seekers assume all risks involved in seeking a cache." need we say more about dangerous caches ?
  21. My interest was pretty much the same as others. I have looked at the topo maps of the area and looks like a few possible access points. Knowing where the Forest Service land is would certainly help in this case though. I too have .50cal ammo cans ready to go and will take one with me when I go. Taking a recon trip up there would be the way to go. Landowner issues as stated, could be easily taken care of by just asking. There have to be some logging roads in the area too.
