  1. The other thing you can try ... read the logs on some of the caches where you live. From there you can tell who are the most active in your area. The owners of those caches probably live in the area too. Send the active cachers or owners an email directly and ask them. I know in my area there is an email list that the area cachers subscribe to ... I only found out about it by starting a dialogue with cache owners in the area.
  2. I don't mean to mock but is 30 F like -1 C? That is down right balmy. It's been -25 C (-13 F) and -40 C (-40 F) with windchill all week here. Still hasn't happered many from caching here. Just meand you bundle up and go. I'm one of those insane people out caching last week from Halden's neck of the woods ... went on a hour and a half hike with Spunsister to "Key Chase" and "Geeks only" on thursday and dragged the family on friday to "What ye looking at?" for just under 3 hours. It was great - just wear lots of layers and keep moving! Best part is ... no mosquitos. The funny thing is that I've mentioned this behaviour to my "pre-caching" friends and they think aliens have taken over my free will! If you had asked me last year if I was capable of going out in this weather the answer would have been a resounding - What are you insane?!! Today was way better - practically a balmy -9C and sunny! Fresh snow - so we went cross country skiing for 2 hours ... didn't find the cache though .
  3. Hi, my husband is going down to Mountain View / San Jose for 2 weeks of work. He will probably not get much time off but I'm lending him my GPSr for the duration. He has mentioned it to his co-workers down there but they don't cache ... they had never heard of it. My question is which caches are the most worthwhile to do. ... If he had the time he'd try for them all! Thanks for any suggestions fireflyfan - freezing up here in Ottawa. I originally had posted this on the Central Valley Cachers forum and they kindly redirected me your way. Yup this is a lot like how I cache - I always need to decrypt the hint!
  4. Oops sorry - I did a search on San Jose and this thread come up. ... my bad. Fireflyfan - see the brain is the first part to freeze.

  6. I've been reading these all morning and thought I should bump it up so it gets the attention it deserves.
  7. I say put your cache in place before you seek approval. I saw a new cache posted last friday and jumped in the car and drove the 30 minutes to get it. Searched for 45 minutes - it was for a first to find - and was about to start raking the forest when the owners husband drove buy. I corralled him and showed him where I thought it should be. Yup - that's where his wife told him she was going to put it. "Going" being the optimum word . She expected to have 24 hours in which to place the cache. So long story short I didn't get to claim the "first to find" but I did claim my first "first to not find" tm spunsister.
  8. I bought a sportrak in September. After much frustration we finally figured out that if we added .020 to the west co-ordinate (which is about 70 of my paces) we would be very close to the cache. When my friend got her gps we discovered that this was a constant error. Rather than fighting with it I returned it to the store got a brand new replacement and now the coordinates are dead on.
  9. I recently went to a cache. I had the container in my hands but I just couldn't open it. My fellow geocacher couldn't get it open either. We tried for a long time. I think the hulk was the last person there. I logged it as a find saying "took nothing left nothing and didn't sign the log book". I also explained the circumstances. My question is: was I supposed to log as a find or a note? This was a week ago and I haven't heard from the cache owner nor has anyone else logged it.
