  1. "I have only come across one rattler that was coiled up and it was making so much noise as I approached that you would of had to been deaf not hear it. " The one I came across with my kids was right at the edge of a trail in the grass, mid afternoon in the hot sun, and it didn't coil up and rattle until my daughter almost stepped on it. Believe me, we would have rather kept our distance than have a mild heart attack like that. I guess it's just a reminder to be prepared and always keep your eyes open. Nature is very unpredictable. We still love to cache, and have a great time. We also have a bigger respect than ever and tread very lightly.
  2. I thought I remembered one of the locationless caches asking for a picture of cachers with a military tank. Does anyone know which one this is? I actually found one on a house hunting trip and would like to post it, but can't find it.
  3. I heard that old tale about rattlers being more afraid of you than you are of them. I believed it until I ran into one in the middle of a trail in NY's Catskill Mtns. It stood its ground and rattled away each time we approached it. Since it was blocking our route we tossed a few stones at it in hopes of scaring it away, but that only seemed to piss it off more. We eventually made two forked sticks to protect ourselves and walked slooowly past it, well out of reach of a strike (in our judgement). It sat there coiled and rattling as we passed, but thankfully never struck at us. The same thing happened to me and my kids a couple of months ago in the hills of Riverside, CA. I could still hear it rattling even after we had gotten about 50 feet away from it. Very scary, but educational for a 6 and 8 year old. Fortunately, they now have a big interest in learning all about snakes. They have become their classroom experts.

  5. Found my first one on 7-24-01, found my 100th on 4-8-02. A little over 8 months. I was looking forward to that 100th, but was surprised at how good it actually felt to get to it.
  6. Great idea!! I need 3 of them so far, soon to be at least 5. Where do I send the check??
  7. Southern CA is just as bad. I ran into a rattler with my kids recently, don't know how many rattles, but he had about 2.5 inches worhth of them. You can read my frantic log here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=6607 I read in a log about a week later that another local cacher had run into a little one about 15 miles from there. Someone told me they are coming closer in to the cities this year than before because we have had so little rain. Don't know if that's true or not, but I'm keeping my eyes wide open from now on!

  9. Try "Sunrise over Chickencoop" It's in Southern CA, and it's not a traditional rock climb, but you'll get the idea when you see the page.

  11. I just checked the site again, and they are now accepting applications! "The dates and times of the semi-finalist interviews will be set by the Producers in May or June of 2002. Those applicants who are selected as finalists will be flown to Los Angeles from their major local airport for finalist interviews in June or July of 2002. If selected as a contestant, you and your teammate must be willing to travel to numerous locations around the world lasting approximately 30 to 40 days. Applications must be received by May 8, 2002." I've gotten a few good responses, and I am really hopeful about this. Looks like we're really on a time schedule now!

  13. I was going to apply to be on the Amazing Race (CBS), but my teammate had to drop out due to scheduling. They are not taking new applications yet for the next one, but in preperation for a time when they are, I need to find someone who would like to apply with me. I'm the only person I know who can take the time off (I'm self employed), so I have to shop around for people I don't know I want someone who is smart, physical, adventurous, curious, moderately competative, and is willing to put up with me! Since most geocachers seem to have most of these qualities, I thought this might be a good place to look. I think we might have a good chance of making it to the interview stage just based on the fact that we would be a team of two people who don't even know each other! So far they haven't had a team of people who met over the internet. Email me if you're interested, or post your comments here, even if you think I'm crazy. Of course, this would only confirm that my friends are right, ha.

Hey, Miss Jenn, I'm moving to Eastern PA probably around July. My husband isn't much of a cacher and I won't know a soul. You want to meet up with me some time and find some caches? I would love some help learning about local dangers and such. I have to worry about rattle snakes and mountain lions here in Southern CA, but I don't know what to look for in PA, and I'd love the company.
  16. We got pins at our SoCal picnic. Uneakone has a button machine and made a basket full of pins for us, and the cacher's who had posted a note to the page saying they would be here even got personalised buttons with our caching names on them. She then took the time to hide them individually for us so we could claim them as a cache find! I'm not sure how to put a picture on here, but they were very nice. White with the black part of the logo on them with the picnic title and date. I love mine. Oh, and they had a shamrock on them too. It was St. Patrick's day.
  17. Hey Markwell, my husband's name is Kelly also, but he only rarely caches with me. He's only interested if I can find one with a good historical interest. The best thing about his name is that if someone calls for Ms. Kelly soandso, we know it's a telemarketer right away. I got my co-workier interested back in September, now we hunt together all the time.A client of mine now does it about 3 times a month. Among the 3 of us, I think we have gotten at least 4 other people started also. A client called me at work the other day and put me on the phone with her co-worker to explain caching to him, that was a fun call!
  18. "-Does your SUV have an "I'd rather be GEOCACHING" license plate frame? -Do you have MAPBLAST printouts of directions on the passenger seat?" Gmaxis, have you been following me??

  20. I bring my attack dalmation, and a hefty walking stick complete with martial arts knowledge of how to use it. I figure no one can use the dog against me like they could a gun. Not to mention her great ability to smell any wild life that might come my way.

  22. I suggest you make it a "No potato salad" pot luck. Pot lucks are famous for having about 12 different bowls full of potato salad and almost nothing else! I'll bring home made salsa and a dessert. Sound OK? Also, if you are looking for donated prizes, I can donate some services from work, let me know.
