  1. Mrs ofth just found this on the Help section: 3.11. Grandfathered Geocaches What does "grandfathered" mean? In geocaching terms, the word "grandfathered" means to grant a special exception. More clearly, to "grandfather" something is to allow certain situations to exist based on an older rule (this is the "grandfather clause") even though a new rule is currently in place. For example, geocache types like Virtual Geocaches and Webcams are no longer accepted as new listings today, but those that already exist remain as "grandfathered" geocaches as long as they continue to be maintained by their owners and are good for the game. Even grandfathered caches should continue to be good examples of geocaching. If they aren't, they are eligible to be archived regardless of their grandfathered status.
  2. A little history of the Brass Cap Cache and the Ye Ole Survey Monuments Cache. Before I created the two I asked geocaching.com if they could include Canada and the UK in with the US benchmarks.I also submitted links to data bases for these surveyed points from both countries. As a surveyor I knew that most people have never been to these locations and would enjoy some of the history and views they provide. I was told it wasn't possible. I then submitted the two caches. There were no restrictions or changes from geocaching.com to my original submitted cache proposals. It's the same today as it was 15 years ago. Was it a mistake or over site? Who really should care. They were approved and each cache has given years of enjoyment to geocachers. Why should that change?
  3. I'm giving Jeremy one of my gold embossed Brass Cap geocoins and thanking him for grandfathering my caches
  4. I have received official notice that the new changes do apply to my four caches. Thank you to those that showed their support.Yes as pointed out these caches did have a small percentage of cachers finding them and they all enjoyed the hunts and had fun.Isn't that what geocaching is all about? Is there no place for the rare and unique geocache on geocaching.com. All four were very popular and all logs were legitimate finds. Each trig and brass cap location had a separate ID name and number. No double logs were ever made at the same location by the same geocacher. There was a smiley face at the end of each hunt but I guarantee that it was never about boosting stats. There are way easier ways to boost stats. As for "the post a note" comments geocaching would not be very popular if you couldn't get the smiley after a find. It just doesn't have the same effect. All smileys were earned there was no one looking for loopholes to advance their find counts. So after more than 15 years of promoting and supporting and enjoying geocaching it is a sad day. It did get me thinking of back on one of my better days geocaching when I met this young cacher.Shortly after the visit Jeremy went out and found one of my brass caps. For the fact checkers he just found one. I know I could have taken him to another one but he was a busy boy that day
  5. I'm very confused with this type of comment? What is geocaching? Well here's a log from my Brass Cap cache that does give me a great explanation of what geocaching is all about. Note the comment.... "They are the reason we have explored so much of our great province. The most favourite reason I love hunting for caps is all the fun I’ve had finding them with family and good friends and the memories we have created together "
  6. GC43F3-Brass Cap Cache was created March 21 2002 at present has 20,202 finds GC45CC-Ye Ole Survey Monuments was created March 25 2002 at present has 22,630 finds GCA0D6-Stash n' Dash was created November 15 2002 at present has 1558 finds GC4411 -LEAP FROG was created March 2 2002 at present has 384 finds I have four caches that can be logged more than one time. How are the new changes going to affect these caches? All four were created early on in geocaching history to help promote geocaching. In the early days of geocaching in Alberta and the UK there was vast areas with very few caches to find.I started the The Brass Cap in Alberta and Ye Ole Survey Monuments in the UK and gave cachers in all areas something to find and a way to check the accuracy of their gps as well as taking them to locations they normally would not have seen. Stash n' Dash and Leap Frog caches were created to help promote caching in the City of Calgary. I have maintained these caches for 15 years. All logs have been checked and if they are not logged as per cache log requirements they have been deleted or the cacher has adjusted them to conform with what was required. The reason I have maintained these caches so many years is the logs and pictures I get on the pages. You will not find many "Found it" logs. Most are entertaining and amusing. There has always been concerns with multiple logging Brass Cap and Ye Ole Survey Monuments caches which I have never understood as each location is separate.I have tried to add some history, a view a hike in most locations to add to the hunts.I have also been asked numerous times for a cap or YOSM to be placed near events.I am not sure if my caches are going to be affected by the new changes but will be watching with interest
  7. I now have the event date, thanks here's a link to some pictures. We may get in to check the house on Wednesday. Here's a picture link http://www.google.ca/search?q=high+river+flood+pictures&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=3-fQUZLRLIvuigLr-YGoDQ&ved=0CCoQsAQ&biw=1113&bih=717
  8. I had an email for a YOSM location a few days ago but can't find the email. Our town has suffered a disaster as a flood has taken over our town and all 13000 residents has been displaced for the past 8 days.I have tried to keep up with my emails but seemed to has lost the request. Please send me a note and I'll try to get it posted. Thanks Brian
  9. Thanks for the postings and emails.YSM500 will be posted soon
  10. I'm looking for a location for YSM500.Maybe a historic location or one with a great view. You can post here or email me at outforthehunt@gmail.com. Thank you for any suggestions.
  11. Thank you for the input. As with most things there are different views on what is acceptable and fair. This cache and my Brass Cap cache were created to promote geocaching and to get people out to areas they would not normally go to. Some cachers didn't like the idea of not finding a Tupperware box filled with toys in it at the end of the hunt but YOSM and Cap hunters are more interested in the hike, view and sometimes the history of what is at the end of the hunt. It shows up in your logs as you could just send me the information I require and put "found it" in your log find. I see a great deal of effort with your log postings and pictures and appreciate the effort. I think for now I'll sit on the fence a bit longer as I agree with both sides. One example of retrospective logging that I think adds to the cache page are the ones described by John "They involved a considerable outlay in effort which was rewarded with some great views and a good deal of self satisfaction." As with the Ben Nevis hikes. I recognize the effort put into some of the hikes and really don't expect you to have to head back up there again. I also think that after reading some of these logs and viewing the pictures it may encourage others to try some of these hikes. I have deleted some logs. Some justified and some may have been in the grayish area and not justified it's hard sometimes to decide what was fair. Sorry if you were one of the unfair choices. "Isle of Arran" No problem. Maybe send me a note just before heading out. Still looking for feedback
  12. I have had issues with retrospective logs on the YOSM cache. I have deleted some logs and allowed others and still haven't come to terms with what is fair as I get emails both for and against. So I guess it's a good time to open the discussion on what you think is fair. Certainly no logs before the cache was created will be allowed. The cache wasn't created to increase log finds.I was having some concerns with that when I started to get so many retrospective logs.I'm open for any feedback on what the majority think is fair. Brian
  13. I have made a change to the cache page. I hope this helps
  14. I also have this problem: Can not update cache coordinates. Keeps changing back to the current coordinates.
  15. Here's a picture of a brass cap location from Alberta Canada.
  16. I'm definitely going to need some kind of user friendly overlay for the YOSM cache. I posted a new location today and was in trouble right away
  17. Sorry for any confusion it had nothing to do with your post. I entered my post and it said it didn't go then I entered again and it said it didn't go through and it seems both did. I deleted one post and entered the confusing smiley guy as I'm totally confused with how the posting works on this site
  18. Lots of good information on this site http://www.canlyme.com/ Checkout the Live Discussion forums on that link
  19. Here's a site that may help you out as well as the paper links given on the Canadian forum. http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/topo/map
  20. Thanks John It does get busy around here and I do miss some things so please try to play by the cache rules. Please don't log retrospective logs as this cache has certainly gained some new interest and I don't want to loose control. I have had to delete a few postings recently. Oh yeah did I mention I really like the pictures
