  1. There are some hunting gadgets that you may be able to use or modify for your purpose; game sensors. They are a bit pricey though. I'm afraid if you try to use a toy or the guts therefrom you may have poor reliability/longevity outdoors. In any case, a cache site involving active electronics would certainly be one of the higher maintenance type. Look into sealed lead acid batteries to power it. These are the type used industrially for lots of long term situations. For more help on the technical aspects of a sensor system or power options try posting to sci.electronics.basics or sci.electronics.design or email me.
  2. I use a large vertical fanny pack (Mountainsmith Chameleon I) and for my electronics I wear a radio harness (Conterra double). The radio harness has the advantages of keeping the receiver antenna mostly clear of body blocking and since I tether all my radios to the harness, I can only drop them a few inches.
  3. Seems to me that some of you like to create caches to show how clever you are. Okay with me to a point. My understanding of the spirit of the game is to give the seeker a pleasant experience. This certainly may involve overcoming some difficulties but why put the seeker through hell just to find a nothing cache in a garbage pile. I would rather have people find my cache and be happy, not just relieved. My own approach to cache hunting has been to not seek caches placed by people who have disappointed me in this way more than a few times. Quality, not quantity please.
