Kreativität wird aber schon gebremst (keine physischen Stationen) und schnelle Punkte empfohlen (Zwei-Stunden-Regel). Ich frage mich, wie viele Lab-Owner sich das wohl vorher angesehen haben? Letztens hat mir ein Lab-Owner erzählt, dass in den Lab-Guidelines steht, dass man einen Lab innerhalb von 2 Stunden zu Fuß absolvieren können muss (!). Für mich heißt das, dass Groundspeak die Dinger wirklich einfach und schnell will. Zum Glück halten sich nicht alle Cacher daran und es gibt keinen Reviewprozess - so entstehen interessante Dinger, wie die von Mausebiber verlinkten. Das ändert aber nichts daran, dass im Groundspeak'schen Sinne die arothron'sche Meinung richtig ist. Und das sehen auch die meisten Lab-Owner so. Danke für die schönen - nicht guideline-tauglichen - Gegenbeispiele. :-)

Und kurioserweise sind dann genau diese Microcaches in der Stadt - zum Beispiel neben der Kirche, die das halbe GPS-Signal abdeckt - als D1 gelistet, während die Munitionskiste im Wald, die man dank der guten Koordinaten und des Hasengrills sofort findet, D2 ist. :-(

You paid for the first tracking code. You paid for the second tracking code again while the first one is still working. The material cost of the badge is almost nothing. You only pay for the codes (and you pay too much but that's another topic). Now you want to overwrite the second working code (which you would never use in this case) with the old working code? Just to reuse an old listing? That doesn't make any sense to me. I would suggest to ... 1) ... use the new bought trackable for a new traveller. If you buy two codes you should have two icons moving. 2) ... use the old code on something new and release the new object as replacement for the old one. 3) ... be happy as you'll recieve more logs as you have two items now. Fair point - I was too strict. But in fact here I rarely see caches being unarchived. I am thinking if I find this unfortunately - in fact no, as in almost any cases the archiving was right. :-) By the way I like the new system more: giving the owner more time until a cache is archived. Klar - laufe 100 Meter um eine Kirche, gib fünf sinnlose Antworten ein, und schon bist du Raketenwissenschaftler. Zum Glück kann man auch 34 Caches mit jeweils mindestens 10 Favoritenpunkten finden, da hat man mehr davon und bekommt auch seine Souvenirs. Das sollte in drei Monaten zu schaffen sein. Warum gibt es nicht einfach nur 10 Punkte pro abgeschlossenem Adventure? Meinetwegen auch die ganzen anderen Caches nicht, dann würden sie ihre App wirklich bewerben. So finde ich das Ganze..... offtopic, sorry.

The guidelines are very clear: https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=38&pgid=56 "If a cache is archived by a reviewer or staff for lack of maintenance, it will not be unarchived." But again: it's good that our reviewers (I think it is not just yours) sometimes make decisions that help the community more than following every letter of the guidelines. :-) And there may be other cases as "lack of maintenance"... One thing that makes the situation worse is the higher fluctuation of the cacher community. Starting the hobby is easier as 2004 (the mobile phone is available and you don't need an expensive handheld GPS device) and therefore more people start caching and put out their own ones very quick. And then they lose interest in the hobby and their caches remain in place until.... :-( If you see that a cacher hasn't been online for quite some time and the cache is not in a good health use the "needs archived" log. As long as cache owners are active you contact them via "needs maintenance" and hope that they take care for their caches (if not - NA some weeks later). But if they haven't been logged in for two years all the NM logs are in vain, use NA directly. As someone said before caches are rarely archived immediately, so your NA might lead to a reviewer deactivating the cache (step one: done) and giving the owner some more days (30 in the most cases) to take care for the cache. So in the end the owner still can maintain the cache after your NA log. I wish you fun hiding and maintaining your new caches! Jochen

As I said: I don't see the fault on your part but by just taking a not very close look it seems as if your cache has been archived by the reviewer due to bad maintenance. Your first post was about unmaintained caches and about caches being archived by the system. Your cache is the best example that a) not every cache that looks unmaintained is unmaintained. And if there are two DNFs that's not a sign that something is wrong. b) caches shouldn't be archived to soon. Addon to b): As you see the reviewer told you that your cache can be unarchived later if you maintain it. So archiving the cache was not its end in those days. Nowadays a cache which has been archived by the reviewer can't be unarchived anymore. The rules are more strict there but that's the reason why it takes a little longer (usually! there are exceptions) until a not maintained cache gets archived. And just another addon: I fully agree with you that caches should be maintained and if it is missing the owner should take care. The first step is deactivating the cache as soon as possible if it is probably missing as cachers shouldn't come in vain. There will always be cache owners putting out caches and losing the interest in the hobby - and I am quite sure those kind of cachers existed in the early times, too. So will you tell me that unmaintained caches didn't exist in 2005 when you started your caching carreer? I think that's a long time problem and I don't think it has gotten any better or worse over the last years. Jochen

Note that many cachers do not log DNF as they are afraid to admit that they have failed. But if another cacher logs a DNF the shame isn't as big and they can log their DNF, too. Following cachers trying to find the cache see two DNF logs and stop searching after two minutes because of those logs discouraging them. And if there haven't been found it logs for one year but two DNFs then no one dares to do the search!? But does that say that the owner needs to look for the cache as it is clearly (???) missing? I like to say "DNFs sind Rudeltiere." (that might translate as "DNFs are pack animal." if I may believe the online translator with this word) as one DNF often leads to a second while there's rarely a single one. So no DNF does not mean that the cache is in place and some DNFs don't mean that the cache is surely missing. The owners do not have to control their caches after some DNF logs. Of course it is nice for the future searchers if they do so but I wouldn't tell them irresponsible as you do. Of course they should react after two many DNFs but don't expect too much of them. The NA log was too early in this case and you didn't have enough time taking care for the cache. But considering your post you might name yourself irresponsible because of that?!)

Ich stimme dir zwar zu, aber als ersten Schritt finde ich es bei Stadtcaches (und nur da!) gar nicht schlecht. Man kann ja zu Hause Koordinaten auf diese Weise nehmen und sich dann selbst hinrouten lassen. Wenn man dann mit den Google-Maps-Koordinaten zu seiner Dose geführt wird, sind sie gut und man kann sie übernehmen, wenn nicht, dann nicht. Google maps als Kontrolle zu nehmen (einmessen mit dem GPS-Gerät oder Handy, Kontrolle zu Hause über google maps, um grobe Fehler zu vermeiden), kann auf jeden Fall nicht schaden. Die Genauigkeit von Smartphones ist heute tatsächlich nicht mehr schlecht, ich bin da aber bei hcy: Im Zweifel würde ich mich da nicht drauf verlassen, auf mein GPS-Gerät schon. Aber auch da sehe ich das Smartphone als ersten Schritt: Wenn man an der schönen Stelle vorbeikommt, kann man mit dem Smartphone Koordinaten nehmen. Wenn man dann am nächsten Tag eine Dose verstecken will, lässt man sich von einem anderen Gerät hinrouten und schaut, wie gut die Koordinaten sind. Wenn sie gut sind usw. Auch mit dem GPS-Gerät kann man leider erfahrungsgemäß schlechte Koordinaten nehmen. Im Zweifel immer am nächsten Tag selbst testen, einen Betatester testen lassen usw. usf. In manchen Gegenden hat man sowieso keine Chance, eine gute Koordinate zu kriegen - egal, wie man es macht, da springen die Koordinaten wie wild in der Gegend herum. Da hilft dann ja zum Glück noch ein guter Hint. :-) Herzliche Grüße Jochen

Hi, meinst du auf der Karte? Es gibt zwei mögliche Einstellungen, wie die App mit absolvierten Lab-Adventures umgeht: anzeigen oder verbergen. Du hast hier wohl (was ich sinnvoll finde, vor allem in Gebieten mit vielen Adventures) verbergen eingestellt, darum "verschwinden" sie, wenn du sie abgeschlossen hast. Wenn du absolvierte Adventures anzeigen lässt, dann werden sie mit einem Haken auf der Karte angezeigt - ich denke, das ist das, was du suchst, zumindest entspricht das dem Smiley. Bei den richtigen Caches kannst du auf der Karte ja auch zwischen Smiley und Ausblenden wechseln. :-) Herzliche Grüße Jochen

Note that there are two restrictions if a cache can be seen or not by non-premium members: The owner can decide to make the cache "Premium member only" (hint: don't do it) so "normal" members can't see the cache neither via app nor the webiste. But they can still log it online, let's say if they visit it with a premium member. In the app there is another restriction: if the difficulty or terrain rating is higher than 2.5 non-premium members can't see these caches via the app. That's a big disadvantage of it. I am sure you want your cache to be found my as many cachers as possible so don't use the PMO feature. Premium members are for sure no better cachers as non-premium ones. Jochen

Sure it is - it contains several thousand finds. But that's no problem with the old version as it ignores all of the old drafts that have been uploaded before. The old system works quite fine here. :-) The new version does not ignore these already uploaded finds though Mount10Bike tells me it would do so: So that's wrong for my file but hopefully only for the first time (if I ever have to use it). So I can live with it and as long as it works I will use the old system. By the way I haven't bulk resetted any caches. ;-) Jochen

Und um mal den Bogen zu spannen von "FP für den geilen Cache" zu "FP für den Owner": Der Cache kommt auf die persönliche Favoritenliste, weil man ihn sehr gut findet. Aber weil der Owner diesen Cache gelegt hat, bekommt er den FP halt doch irgendwie, weil es ja sein Werk ist. Und wenn ein Cacher Caches legt, die viele Favoritenpunkte haben, dann sagt man halt, dass der Owner viele Favoritenpunkte sammelt - auch wenn es streng genommen seine Caches sind. Sagt man so und jeder weiß, was gemeint ist. Ich denke, das war auch hier jedem klar, auch schon, als ich es das erste Mal nicht ganz sauber formuliert habe. As I said: no it does not. I haven't emptied my visits.txt for some years now and I am uploading the new drafts with the old version regularly. The new version still tries to upload all of them - if not it wouldn't say that only 1,000 at a time are possible but upload only the few new ones. But you helped me a lot and I will go that way: --> As long as the old version works I will use that. --> As soon as the old version stops oeprating I will delete my visits.txt once and start a new life with the new version. As I like to write long individual logs for any (!) cache the draft system is very important to me. If I short logged most caches it wouldn't be necessary but good logs take time and only be using the drafts system I can log them days (or weeks) later if necessary. Thanks to everyone. Jochen

Hi, the new system won't upload my fieldnotes at all as in my visits.txt file there are more than a thousand drafts from the recent years and the system tells me that it can't upload more than a 1000 drafts at once and nothing happens. So I conclude that it tries to upload all of them. So probably it is just for the first time as I have never used the new system before (because of that reason!)? That's not very self-explanatory so thank you very much for your information. If I understand you correctly I have to upload an empty visits.txt ONCE to activate the "don't upload drafts before ...." feature and next time using the new system it will only take the newer ones? But if I ever switch back to the old system I have problems again as the systems don't talk to each other? Thanks again. Jochen

Hello, I am referring to the problem which I have already mentioned here (see details if my post here doesn't give enough explanation): My hope that this feature already exists and I am just too silly to find it has gone as no one could give me an answer. There are two versions of the draft system on the website: the old one and the new one. In the old version you can tell the website only to upload new drafts. Let's say I uploaded my drafts today, 8. of April 2021, 5 p.m., than next time I can upload only those with a later time, only the new ones. With the new version this does not work so the system wants to upload all my drafts from the visits.txt file, even those I have already uploaded. At the moment I use the old system as the new one is unusable for me due to this missing feature. But I have the fear that someday the old version will be deactivated and only the new one will work. HHL suggested (see his answer in the linked post) to delete the txt file each time you upload the drafts. That might work but it is laborious and it shouldn't be necessary to do so. So my feature request is to add this existing feature (!) in the old version to the new version, too. Thanks! Jochen

Ah, okay. Am Anfang hieß es irgendwann einmal, dass manche Cacher einen Credit bekommen und wenn sie ihn nicht bis Tag X brauchen, dieser nicht verfällt, sondern an jemand anderen vergeben wird. Das fand ich gar nicht so schlecht, aber mit nicht verfallenenden Credits verfällt dafür diese Möglichkeit. Vielleicht kommt dann ja (konsequenterweise) irgendwann die Möglichkeit, den Credit weiterzugeben, damit er nicht auf ewig ungenutzt bleibt. Sobald das geht, würde ich ihn dann gleich wegspenden. Vielleicht ist das aber für Groundspeak auch nicht mehr so kritisch, da die Labs anfangs als begrenzter eingeplant waren, als sie jetzt sind. Und da es eh genug gibt, können auch ALCs-Credits verfallen bzw. eben ungenutzt bleiben.

Hello Ari, there have been many discussion about those numbers being fake or not. And I am still sure that finding so many caches isn't fun to them but hard work - doesn't matter if they are all honest finds or if they have been cheating. It's like finding 1,000 and more caches in one day - that may be fun for some hours but I am sure that is is getting boring and tiring in the end to keep up the work. A very important thing to learn: It is not about the numbers. And if someone comes to you and tells you that he has found many more caches than you - don't care. Do you have fun finding caches? That's great. And that's the only thing that matters. Not numbers. I really like multi caches and have found more than 2,300 of them. Funny enough I have found more multi caches than https://www.geocaching.com/p/?u=alamogul with his more than 210,000 finds. So we can't compare our numbers as they search quick traditional caches and i hunt for the time taking multi caches. But if someone told me Alamogul was better I disagree - with only 1900 multi caches found? :-) You see, there is no way to compare statistics so don't try to - do what you like most and do it for yourself only. :-) Jochen PS: By the way: I've been caching for about 12 years now and have found about 12,000 caches, so about 1,000 per year. That's much. I wouldn't want to find more but that's the perfect time and effort for me which I want to use for this great hobby.

Ziemlich sicher genau deswegen, aber auch nicht-trollend würden die Leute sonst Note: "toller Cache" Note: "Wenn ich mal eine Rakete habe, will ich den unbedingt machen." DNF: "Leider nicht gefunden, haha." usw. loggen, ohne das irgendwie böse zu meinen. Dazu kämen dann zig ernstgemeinte NA-Logs (warum nur NM? Wenn man die richtigen Guidelines zitiert, ist zum Beispiel beim ISS-Cache ein NA mehr als gerechtfertigt). Ich meine mich sogar zu erinnern, dass das ISS-Listing früher voller Logs war, die alle aufgeräumt wurden bis auf ganz wenige Ausnahmen. Ich vermute, ein solcher Cache hätte in den ersten Tagen nach der Promo-Mail vielleicht 100 Logs pro Tag, aber eben keine Funde. Die Sperrung verstehe ich da schon. Der von Mausebiber verlinkte Cache https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4W9H7_deep-gold hatte in den letzten Tagen sogar virtuelle TB-Ablagen.... Verrückt!

Ich habe am 19.03.2020 eine Mail vom Hauptquartier bekommen, dass ich ausgewählt wurde, blablabla. (Das war ganz am Anfang, bevor die Dinger überall herausgekommen sind. Im Nachhinein bin ich froh, keinen gelegt zu haben.) Jetzt habe ich mal auf der Webseite nachgesehen, ich könnte den immer noch erstellen. Der Stichtag für die allererste Runde ist also immer noch nicht abgelaufen. Zumindest nicht bei mir. :-) Und der 31.03. ist ja auch schon wieder einige Tage Vergangenheit. So sieht's gerade bei mir aus: In der Mail stand damals noch eine Frist von August 2020, vermutlich wurde die wegen Covid-19 dann um ein paar viele Monate verschoben. Mal schauen, wann dieser "Adventure credit" endlich verschwindet...

Aber es gibt eben doch einzelne wenige, die sich den Champagner leisten wollen (obwohl er vermutlich nicht besser schmeckt als billigeres Zeugs). Und ein Cache, der bei Weitem nicht für alle ist, aber den eben einzelne auserlesene gerne machen, erfüllt einen Sinn. Dazu zählen für mich z. B. München-Venedig (um ein konkretes Beispiel zu nennen), ein krasser D5-Mystery über wasweißich oder ein Tauchcache in 15 Metern Tiefe - letzteres können nicht viele (ich zum Beispiel nicht), aber eben doch ein paar und die finden's dann meistens auch ziemlich gut. Zwischen "kaum jemand" (15 Meter tief) und "niemals jemand" (10.000 Meter unter NN) ist für mich (subjektive Meinung!) ein großer Unterschied. Dadurch, dass die oben verlinkten Caches (aber nicht der eine, den Mausebiber verlinkt!) von Groundspeak gesperrt werden, zeigt ja eigentlich auch, dass sie die Caches nicht als normale Caches ansehen. Danke auf jeden Fall für eure Meinungen, ich freue mich über weitere. Mir ging es tatsächlich erst einmal nur darum, ob ich das mit den falschen Augen sehe und einfach zu wenig Humor habe. ;-)

Hallo xelarep, Entwürfe sind immer für Logs. Das, was du suchst, ist eher das Feld für persönliche Notizen, das du in den Cache-Listings ganz oben findest: (Das ist die englische Spracheinstellung - im Deutschen wird es ähnlich sein.) Alles, was du hier reinschreibst, ist nur für euch lesbar. Wie du es über die App bedienst, weiß ich nicht, sollte aber auch gehen - und zwar in beide Richtungen. Du solltest über die App hier Daten speichern können (kann z. B. wichtig sein, wenn du outdoor Informationen einträgst, die du später zu Hause haben willst - Koordinaten von Multifinals oder so), sie sollte aber auch in der Lage sein, das Feld zu aktualisieren, wenn du zu Hause hier etwas reingeschrieben hast (z. B. wenn du einen Hint aus einer externen Quelle wie dem Geochecker hast). Herzliche Grüße Jochen

Hallo ihr Lieben, nachdem letztens wieder mal ein Newsletter von Groundspeak reingeflattert ist, der Werbung für einen Cache gemacht hat, den nie jemand finden wird, wollte ich eigentlich schon hier einen Thread aufmachen, um mal ein Meinungsbild einzuholen. Hab's dann natürlich wieder vergessen, aber da der Cache eben in einem anderen Beitrag erwähnt wurde, habe ich wieder dran gedacht. Bekannt ist ja der "Cache" auf der ISS, der nach 12 Jahren tatsächlich schon einen Fund hat (https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC1BE91_international-space-station). Dieser Fund ist allerdings von einem "Cacher", der nur für den Log dieses Caches einen Account angelegt hat. Weniger bekannt ist vielleicht der erste selbstgelegte Cache des gleichen Owners (https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCG822_rainbow-hydrothermal-vents), der nach über 18 Jahren auf seinen ersten Fund wartet. Er liegt auch nur 2.300 Meter unter dem Meeresspiegel, sollte also für geübte Apnoe-Taucher schnell machbar sein. ;-) Tatsächlich ist "nur 2.300 Meter" richtig, denn das neueste Werk liegt irgendwo unter der -10.000-Meter-Marke (Vorzeichen beachten!), also noch ein klein wenig tiefer (https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC95P88_challenger-deep-of-the-marianas-trench-at-10-925m). Mich würde einfach einmal interessieren, was ihr von diesen Caches haltet. Eigentlich kann ich meine eigene Meinung in einem Wort zusammenfassen: nichts. Ich bin ganz ehrlich, ich weiß nicht, was das soll. Das ist beeindruckend, wo der Owner schon überall war und so (toller Typ, ehrlich), aber diese Caches haben für mich mit Geocaching gar nichts zu tun. Groundspeak kann sich zwar damit brüsten, dass auf ihrer Webseite auch Geocaches im Weltall gelistet sind, aber ich sehe hier eigentlich keinerlei positive Außenwirkung (und keine Werbung für neue Mitglieder, was vermutlich Sinn und Zweck dieser Promo-Caches ist). Für das normale Cacher-Fußvolk (also alle außer dem Owner) sind die Caches einfach unerreichbar. Und ja, das Argument "sie stören nicht" ist okay, aber sie bringen auch nichts. Und trotzdem wurde auch dieser neue Cache nun wieder von Groundspeak gehypet, als wäre das ein großartiger Cache. Ist er nicht. Es ist ein sinnloser Cache. Da draußen gibt es wirklich gute, machbare (!) Caches, die viel bessere Werbung für geocaching.com wären und die auch gefunden werden. Und selbst die nicht so spannenden Caches haben mehr Wert als die oben genannten. Bin ich der einzige, der das so sieht? Das würde mich mal interessieren. Schade, dass es hier keine Umfrage-Funktion gibt. Welchen Grund seht ihr, dass solche Caches gelistet sein sollten? Gelegt wurden sie vermutlich wegen des Arguments "weil ich es kann", was leider noch nie ein gutes Argument war. Wer noch weitere solche Beispiele dieser Bauart kennt, kann sie ja gerne hier anfügen.
