  1. Hi folks Time to upgrade my GPS unit. Have been reading a lot about the 64s and the 700 series Oregons. My quick question is this. As I read it my understanding is that I can download from WIFI. Is that assumption correct? Can I connect to WIFI at home, download some caches onto the Oregon or do I still have to connect to my computer and download through cable? Thanks in advance.

    Help

To download a cache from the website to your unit, make sure you DO NOT change the interface, plug in your USB to the computer turn on the unit and leave it. Find a cache you want to hunt for and simply send it to your unit. Once it is successful, unplug the unit and find your cache by looking up in Waypoints or in Geocahce (under the find) button on the unit. Sounds like what is happening is that you are sending the caches to the storage card, not the unit. Good luck. JPL` You don't need the EasyGPS.
  3. Just wanted to know if anyone has an explanation of why when I send a City Navigator section in Map Source to my 60 CSx I get a Can’t unlock map message on the unit??? It was downloaded from garmin as an upgrade for my Nuvi 260…is that why?
  4. Mine used to freeze all the time. No rhyme or reason. Some people thought it was because of the NT maps, but mine started doing it with just the base map. I sent it back and the new one did the same thing… I ended up with a 60CSx and I can’t be happier. JP`
  5. It’s an ongoing debate…done that bought the t-shirt. It comes down to one thing. Go out with one, then go out with the other, which ever you like best is the on you buy. I love the E-trex series, they are an awesome little unit. I love the 60 CSx I ended up with. It’s really up to you. Good luck! JPL`
  6. You can try this out for a bit research. It also depends on what kind of map you’re looking for. http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/ontheTrail/ Welcome and enjoy.
  7. I finally received my 60 CSx yesterday in the mail and wow what a nice piece of work. I’ve been back and fourth now with the issues I had with the Vista HCx freezing up, adored my Legend HCx, but really wanted the Alti and the EC so now the 60 CSx is in my possession. I am ecstatic about the unit. It works very well, performs better and depending on circumstances, worse then the Vista, but that was to be expected. I love the size (feels like you have a real sturdy piece of equipment in your hand) and I love the controls and their placement, truly intuitive (for me) anyway. That’s the point I want to make about all of this, for all those in search of their GPSr’s. GO TO A STORE, don’t order online like I did. Put the ones on your short list in your hand, feel what you like and don’t like, and don’t allow others to pick for you, but listen to their suggestions. That’s it, happy caching! Now you tell me...what would you have liked to know then after having done it for a while. JPL`
  8. So my Vista HCx froze once again on non-NT maps, and I sent it away for a replacement unit. Sure enough the replacement unit did the same. I’m at a lose. Anyway, I sent that away and purchased the 60 CSx, I am very pleased with the decision and I am looking forward to it’s arrival. I’ll keep you posted! JPL`
  9. So far so good...the Hard reset is hopefully a fix! I will try the NT maps again to see if it freezes. Here is to hoping! JPL`
  10. Miragee, I am interested in what you said. Having the ability to export .gpx files from GSAK to Vista HCx as POI’s. How would I do that? JPL`
  11. Apparently NT maps are the culprit when using Canadian TOPO maps. So I have found a free site that downloads TOPO’s…thanks to Ibycus, the master map developer. So I’ll keep my fingers crossed and see if this solves the problem. Also tried a Hard reset….keep your fingers crossed. JPL` Might just be able to save my Vista HCx after all
  12. I am coming up on week two of owning my brand new Vista HCx, an upgrade to my Legend HCx. Over the two week period my Vista HCx has frozen on the map view countless times. I was told that my version of Mapsource might be the issue, but after testing it with the Basemap the same thing happened a few more times. The arrow that represents where you are on the TOPO map is consistently off as well (showing me passed upcoming turns long before I actually arrive to them) is this normal? It wasn’t the case with the Legend. I have been reading similar issues and find that after spending this amount of money I might as well step it up a notch send it back and move to a 60CSx…so I’m looking for owners of the 60CSx and would like to hear how they like their 60CSX's. 13. I use the program garmin communication 2520. The download on the garmin site. I use this to send the info off this site to the gps unit. It states that it was successful and when I check the gps from my computer I can see the files in the gps. Even though they are in the gps I cant see them. Now on this site I press the button that states "send to gps" I take it that is the right button. I think you are making the samoe error I made at first. OK…when you click on “Send to GPS” make sure that the device, when found is the GPS unit and not a removable disk, for example ( F: ). To make sure, when you connect the GPS via USB make sure that you don’t change the Interface, that is to say clicking on the Menu from the GPS, then Setup, then Interface. Instead simply turn on the GPS and then send to device without the Interface being done. Hope that helps. Good luck. JPL`
  14. This is a video that taught me how to use basic mapsource...give it a try and let me know if it helped...good luck. JPL`
  15. We call calibrating the compass the 'Dizzy Dolphin Dance". When spinning around, it's a good idea to assume the "I'm a little tea cup" pose, so any onlookers don't think you're spinning around for no good reason. Don't forget to do the "tip me over" move, once you get the successful calibration message. LOL!!!! I will try that next trip out! Bought it by the way, and I LOVE it!
  16. Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with their Vista HCx freezing up on them? I was out and around today and the screen froze on three separate occasions. Nothing in common for the freeze. No electricity lines. One was in the car, one in deep foliage, and one in an open field. Batteries are good…so what’s up? Any ideas? JPL`

  18. So True! I ended up going with the compass in the end, and didn't want the price tag for the 60CSx. Still found it interesting for the difference in the chip set. From what I have read, there isn't that much of a difference. Now I have to wait three days for the new Vista...seems long now!
  19. Interesting weekend. I had a great weekend out and around a new location and found 10…it was great! The best part is that I hooked my brother to the addiction, and he ended up buying my Legend HXc, so I went out to buy and was put into the unique situation of buying again but with more knowledge about what I want and need. It came down to the Vista Hcx and the 60Cx. I ended up with the 60Cx…BUT. We went out with the units side by side and something odd happened. The Legend HCx out preformed the 60 Cx …by a significant amount…7 feet on one Cache and over 15 on the next. What gives? I thought the more expensive unit would do better. I don’t want to be hard on the 60 Cx, and I’m sure I probably did something wrong with the new unit. But could there be a logical explanation? In the end I brought it back and went with the Vista HCx for the compass ability. Just wondering if anyone else has had the chance to do something similar?
  20. I currently have an eTrex Legend HCx. Ok, what does the compass on the Vista HCx do that my compass doesn’t? If I stand still, will it point to the cache without me moving? Or is it like the Legend in that I have to move for it to work? Thanks JPL`
  21. Yay! My Palm m500 arrived from E-bay today…! Totally excited to try it out. So now all I need is a bit of know how. The consensuses seems to be Cachemate… my question is this. Can someone run the steps for me …? Step 1 Download Cache mate. Do I put Cachemate onto the Palm? How? Step 2 How do I send .GPX files to the Palm…? ETC I’ve never used Palm anything so I’m not sure what to do… Information and help is REALLY appreciated as always! Thanks gang. I have two Caches left in my area to find and both are under maintenance ROAD TRIP!
  22. I have to go with Michigansnorkeler on this one. Yesterday I was out and had three Caches loaded and ready to find…two were in residential areas and the last was about 200 meters off the road, I wasn’t going to wear my boots but decided to since it lloked like rain and they are waterproof. I put on my hiking boots, and it was a good thing I did, I went down hard on the last cache and I was really Happy I had on my Salomon hiking boots that have a high top that protects my ankles. I would have twisted it worse if it hadn’t been for the extra support. They are fairly lightweight and are not a hassle in the summer. So there you have it, my 2 cents.
  23. Got it, thanks. Once I droped the Zipped folder into the GSAK window it worked out perfectly. Should be getting my Palm from Ebay in about a week...I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks again!
  24. Hi again, I have just received my first Pocket Query and I believe I’m doing something wrong. I received the zipped file and downloaded it. In it are two files with the same name only one has the addition of –wpts.gpx, while the other is a .gpx only file. When I open either (or both at the same time) in GSAK, the information that should be there (ie hints and Cache log/info) doesn't show up. Is there a setting I'm not using? Any thoughts?
  25. I use a bean bag for a Garmin 260 and I LOVE IT. Not sue if it would be the same for a handheld but from what I can tell they are similar...all I can say is that it doesn't move, not an inch and I am a very “spirited" driver. There’s my 2 cents.
