  1. i've already been detained for questioning. Oh flask! that sounds like a story that needs to be shared! LOL
  2. yes, you should be able to do so... just make sure the box labled 'Description is in HTML" is checkmarked
  3. I have recently submitted a cipher based puzzle cache based on a simulator of the encryption device that the Germans used in WWII. Problem I am having is on the difficulty rating. UsingClayjar's system, any cache that requires special training and/or equipment is classified a diff of 5. Would the requirement of having to download and use that simulator fall under 'special equipment' and therefore earning a diff of 5? Markwell this if you must Oh, I WILL post the link to the cache as soon as I get an approval from KYadmin
  4. I also use various tins for my caches... and they seem to do well as TEMPORARY containers... Primarily cause they eventually rust Like everyone else, I covet surplus ammo cans above all alse.. Also, if you go to the hunting section of the sporting goods department of your local wal-mart or, indeed , spoirting goods stores or gunshop, you may be able to locate a plastic version of the ole ammo cans running about $5. I have troied different plastic cache-tainers before and I suppose they couldnt be beat for the price ( and also may be required by some public authorities). online sources ( surplus websites and such) DO sell ammo cans starting from $4.95 BUT you also have to figgure in the shipping and handling. this can be more than double the price. remember, the only true prerequisits for a cachetainer is that they be weather, insect and critter proof.
  5. Me, I like 100 grit sandpaper OR my new toy, a brass wire wheel.
  6. didnt come up for me.eoither ..even with a login..sent me to my yahoo frontpage
  7. Ahhh the best stuff I have hidden in a cache??? Music CD's I have grown tired of. PC video games I have beaten or grown weary of as well as a bunch of really nice $1-$2 things like mini FM radios, battery powered booklights ect ect ect. Come getsome of them! Virgo's Megacache
  8. I feel for ya ,Goldfawn .. i own/operate/sometimes curse a Maggie 310... Best way I found to get around the missing decimal is to use the UTM coordinate system. does make for a bit of a hassle with multis and puzzle caches, though , for most folks DO have thier third digit and dont think about us oldtimers. I wouldn't either. big benefit, however, is that 1/100th of a degree ( the third decimal) equals between 4.5 and 5.5 FEET whereas utm is based on METRIC mesurements and is accurate to 1 meter (3.3 feet) I wouldn't trade my old 310 for any of those 500-waypoint-capable, breadcrumb-trail-laying, FMS-empowered, parallel-processing, MP3-playing, Mosquito repelling, 8 AA powered monstrosities with the 5 inch screens..... Well maybe for the mosquito repellant model
  9. Use the 'Where would I hide...' mindset.. works for me 90% of the time Be Persistant when possible ( excluding road trips n such) keep slugging away at it. There will be caches that almost jump at ya and there will be some that will make you think youve lost your mind:(GCGBTJ - Commodore Confounder took me 8 trips. Some logged , some not) And being a cacher that marches to a different set of coords (UTM! UTM!), I make certain to jot down the posted coords, or bring a print out ( use your PDA if you wish). Once I hit 'ground zero' (within about 50ft on my maggie 310) I play the 'match the coords' game. If the original coords were shot true, matching UTM coords well often get me to within 3 feet of the cache. O course that doesnt mean I'll find it anyway.. but it does help and beats chasing that frillin' arrow
  10. OH! somewhat on-topic... I have been doing a lot of investigating camo , bot patterns and techniques... I came across this website WWW.eDecals.com. they print and sell adhesive vinyl graphics. HAs anyone had any experience with this sort of product? Looks like just the thing for 'standard' traditional or large cache-tainers. Then again, traditional OD green that us ammo cans come naturally in does a better job of hiding than one might think. When I camo up a can, I use the same krylon ultra flats that are mentiond several times in this thread. I like to freehand a pseudo-NATO style 3 ( and sometimes 4) color woodland pattern with a nice bit of blending on the edges. But as per good geocaching manners, I make very certain that my cans are CLEARLY marked with red Groundspeak and Geocky logo stencils and the word Geo-cache if they are in a location that I may think they stand more than a 10% chance of being muggled It is also not beyond me to hot glue sections of split branches or sometimes sections of trunk bark to my cans while being very very careful to avoid anything that looks like a straight line or seam ( dead give away.. have found many 'hollow stick' caches this way) I find this to be very very useful for micros. I have one recent micro where I used thick gell CA glue to stick strips of bark to the cachetainer . been several thumbs up on that one so far Yep! back when I first started placing hides, I thought the mossy oak camo tape was the bomb! And it isnt bad... but from the distance the pattern just seems to merge into one color. If i am prepping an urban magnetic micro ( or sometimes 'sub-micro) I will take my time and try to match the background color... still having a time finding a good 'Medium Bronze' I have been wanting to try the camo burlap that I see sold in sporting goods stores and hunting dept of wal-mart to see if it would work well draped over a cache ? If I get to it, I'll be sure to share Phew! If i werent in such a good mood when I posrted this, I would think I was on a rant!
  11. You're incorrect about #2. I wasn't a paid member until the creation of the OT Forum and its being a Premium Member feature. okay, poor word choice on my part... Should have read "there will always be a few..."
  12. well! I thought I would learn a few things about Geocaching from following the threads... this thread did not disappoint. I have learned that: 1) MOC's vs NonMOC's topic is BOUND to start sparks and flames 2) paid Members will always try to get non paid's to join up, consciously or otherwise 3) I shall never cease to be amazed how seriously posters can treat the trivial If you want to pay your dues and put out MOC's fine, wonderful, more power to ya. If you don't ( for whatever reason) Fine knock yourself out. Otherwise Who really gives a flip?
  13. Oh and dont forget military bases... actually, you probably COULD cache at one but I doubt it would be recommended
  14. My old Magellan 310 is the same way.. only 2 decimal precision. What I anded up doing is using YTM format coordinates then popping over to www.jeeep.com to convert. Works very well. And , actually, Most days I find UTM coords to be very accurate, often to within a meter (3.25 feet). BTW- I love my Maggie
  15. Where do we get magnets??/ anywhere we can find them! stay away from the ones that come in flexible strips.. they dont gripp so well on painted or rusted surfaces. hardware department of local home improvment ceneter is a good bet.. radio shack has some small rare earth magnets that are extrodinarily strong for thier size... and expensive, too. Why magnets?? well, mostly because they are handy for urban caching.
  16. logged a total of 57 DNF's of those only 3 were confirmed MIAs, of the remainder, 12 of them were to far away to return to ( between 120 and 300 miles) and the rest I eventually found
  17. Yess, you will have to convert from D/M/S to either decimal degrees or Degrees w/ decimal minutes. the first link in markwells post , www.JeEep.com is great for that ... i use it to convert my UTM coords into Degree Decimal Minutes ( my old Magellan 310 has only two decimal point precision)
  18. Much along the 'DiHydrogen Oxide" scare a few months back
  19. And GEOCKY has recently released a series of their own GeoCoins geocky coins If one were to want to release their own geocoins , TravelerTags.com sell wooden nickles that , may Groundspeak forgive, are tracked therough the travellertags.com website
  20. Nope ... the treasure wasn't buried ... and actually, neither was the rum cache, technically... jack did not have to dig to get at it . and I would give them both 5/5 special equipment... some form of ship/boat I like the line about "..and compass that doesnt point north" Sounds like my Maggie310
  21. Ooohhh! good one Knight! Okay ... How about adding " Global Positioning Repeater Station (GCxxxx)" hmmm... might use that one myself..okay forget I mentioned it add an antenna of your choice
  22. Alas.. the hypocrisy inherent in humanity condition gains another voice. IMESHO; look at it this way... A large part of any outdoor activity is getting , well, outdoors. the numbers are secondary. Kinda like sport fishing.... most of the time it is just "catch and release" for the enjoyment of the challenge... but every now and again, it is nice to be reconized for a big catch. That is why geocachers say it isnt about the numbers , yet congratulate milestones IMESHO and the way I see it. maybe someone else could be more 'eloquent'
  23. of my nearest 20 the closest at .01 miles is mine as well as the next 4... I have found all but 2 of the next nearest and they are both preferred, one of those disabled for a couple weeks now the . the furthest of the 20 is abt 1.4 miles away. of the nearest 20 UNFOUND caches, all but one are either preferred or virts. Closest at 1.4 miles, furthest at 13.6 miles. --nuff said
  24. What about "The Mummy"? typical 5/5 multi with logbook key hidden in micro...
