  1. While that's mostly true, it's not why they charge a stocking fee. They're doing it so the OP won't shop there any more. That's right. They actually don't want him as a customer, and are purposefully trying to discourage him from shopping their again. About four years ago, Best Buy took a look at their business, and decided they could make more profit (even it it meant fewer actual sales) if they could eliminate certain classes of customers. One of those is the class of people who frequently return items. So they instituted the restocking fee. On special orders, the stocking fee can be as much as 25%. (BTW, the manager lied when he said he couldn't do anything about it - he has the power to waive the fee - for the right person.) The also trained their employees to "read" and classify their customers. If you didn't fall into the right class, expect the store personnel to completely ignore you. Story here. If you complain loudly enough about the fee to the corporate office, they might issue you a store credit (not cash) for the fee amount. Also, if the unit is being returned because it's damaged or faulty in some way, there is NO restocking fee. Not that I'm suggesting anything. In other words I just don't look right to them. I think their classification of customers is flawed, seeing as I bought a TV, camcorder, my first GPS, cell phone, laptop and numerous other small items at that store and I never returned any. But you're right. This experience has discouraged me from shopping there again. I did call and complain, but I guess it wasn't loud enough because I wasn't offered a store credit. Thanks for the info, I'll call again.
  2. Geez, now look at posts #18 & #19. He's spamming with multiple quotes of his original rant. It was not my intent to keep posting the same message. I was trying to add a general response to all and didn't realize I was repeating the original post. So I finally edited the original. You can see my comments there. And here I thought I'd get "thanks for letting me know." Little did I know I'd be attacked for stating my experience with the company.
  3. I'm sharing this with everyone I know. Since many of you may be in the market for a new GPS or any other piece of electronic equipment, you need to know this. Best Buy has a 15% restocking charge on returned items. I recently purchased a GPS, opened it, didn't have the features I wanted, then returned it 3 days later, packaged EXACTLY the way that I bought. I paid cash and had my receipt. That's when they told me there was a 15% restocking charge because it had been opened....$45.00 !!!! to walk over and put it on the shelf. You would have never known it was opened. I said I was never told this, she told me it was on the back of my receipt. Who looks there? I spoke to the manager, he said that's store policy and he can't do anything about it. Seeing as I wasn't going to get anywhere arguing, I said, fine, then just give me my money back. That's when the clerk said, it's over $250 so a check will be mailed to you within 10 days. WHAT???? I paid cash, I want my cash back. Sorry, that's store policy. I was shocked!! If you want verification, look at Best Buy's website and it clearly states these policies. In reply to all your responses: No, I'm not raging, I'm alerting. Yes, I bought one in April and gave it to my son. Yes, I should have researched here before buying, but it was an impulse purchase. The signage was not plainly visible. AND I am a woman, not a HE. My purpose was to inform so others are aware of this policy. Regarding the one I purchased previously, the box did not give enough information about the features or lack thereof. You had to open it and read the 20 page pamphlet to find out. For example, it did not say on the box that you had to buy additional software to get maps that you need to actually use it to make it anymore worthwhile than a paper map for $5.00. Surprise! Fortunately I was able to find the maps on here free, or that one would have gone back also. Now that it was brought to my attention, I can see that some people buy things to use them once or twice and return them. Best Buy or any other store has no way of knowing what the intent of the purchaser might be. How stores can resolve the issue of differentiating between true buyers and abusers, I don't know. But, as in the case of the Garmin I previously purchased, to spend $300 on the unit then have to spend another $150 for maps which they didn't tell you about, would be a justifiable reason for returning it if I didn't want to spend the additional money. The point is, when the box doesn't tell you enough, how else can you know except to open it and read about it? Like the box that says "easy assembly" only to find it has 70 pieces which you have to sort by screw size and it takes two people to hold the thing together so you don't break the coffee table by it flopping over. And that's the whole reason I take issue with this. Packaging is oftentimes misleading and the consumer should not have to pay restocking charges for it. I've purchased electronics from other stores who do not have this policy, though I never even questioned it. They gladly accept the return because they value their customers. Through my naivity, I thought all stores operated that way. If you think I should delete this, then please tell me how. I posted it here because it concerned a GPS purchase, which everyone needs for this hobby.
  4. Do you have some kind of Mapsource Program already? Or do you need to download that too? Assuming you have it, you can just go in to mapsource, and select Ibycus USA from the drop down in the top left hand corner. The only thing I did was install the Trip and Waypoint Manager and bought a 4gb microSDHC card, which I put in the GPS. What is a Mapsource Program and how would I know if I have it or not? Trip and Waypoint Manager is exactly what you need, although I might install the latest mapsource update if I were you (just cuz). You can download it from Garmin's site. http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6137.exe Just load up "Trip and Waypoint Manager" and select "Ibycus USA" from the dropdown list in the top left hand corner of the screen. Then using the "Map Select Tool" (hit m), highlight the area you want to send to the GPS, then hit the "Send to Device" button. Dale I think I'm almost done. I highlighted all of Florida which shows all the counties as different maps. From that list I select the map of the county I want and keep zooming in until I get the streets I'm looking for. Is that correct? Now to get maps of another state, I open up Ibycus USA from the drop down box in the upper left corner and highlight another area, send to device and that will give me another set of maps for that state. Is that right? Thank you, thank you Dale! You have been most patient with this novice.

  7. I have USA1.4 installed on desktop. Now how do I get the maps into my GPS? (eTrex Legend HCx)
  8. Need more info. What brand and model receiver are you using? I"m using the Garmin eTrex HCx Legend. I downloaded the maps from IbycusUSA14; at least I think I did because it didn't say download incomplete. There's two icons on my desktop. When I try to open them one says: IbycusUSA14.exe.part cannot open file, needs to know what program created it. The other is an NSIS (whatever that is) and says installer integrity check failed, common cause incomplete download and damaged media. What am I doing wrong?
  9. Hi Dale, I want to be sure I'm downloading the version that has all of Florida. May I have that info please? Thank you so much
  10. I just bought the eTrex Legend HCx and, never having owned or used any GPS, where do I start? I managed to turn it on and set up my home waypoint, but that's it. After reading all the praises of your maps, I'd like to use those for Florida. Do I need to download the Trips and Waypoint Manager that came with the unit first? Do I need a microSD card to download yours? Do I plug in the USB to the unit and download your file direct or do I save your file to my computer first? Will the entire 864MB file fit or do I only load Florida? If there's anything else I need to know, your guidance would be appreciated. A step by step would be most helpful please.
  11. It would be much appreciated if you could do Florida. No rush as I haven't even picked out my GPS (newbie). Speaking of which, anyone have recommendations for an easy to use GPS for the South Florida region? It's all cities where I am, but once I get my feet wet I might venture to the more rural areas like the Keys.
  12. All my research has left me soooo confused as to which unit to buy. What is the best, easiest to use GPS for flat South Florida? Since it's mostly cities, street maps would probably be needed. Least expensive is a plus, but I'm more concerned that it does what I need with my limited knowledge of operation. If I'm missing any major features to consider, please enlighten me. I'm new to geocaching and want to spend my time searching and not fiddling with a gadget.
