  1. The function of MOB is to create a waypoint and immediately start navigating back to that point. To that end it isn't really optimum for marking your car. Usually there is a quick way to mark the location you are currently at. Most of the time it is faster to just mark a waypoint than to find the MOB function of the GPS. Depending on what unit you have, many GPS units can reposition a waypoint. I have several waypoints set up such as National Car that when I get to a new rental location I edit the waypoint using the reposition here function. I find it is quicker and I can create a more descriptive name when I am not in a rush.
  2. You can use it with one more piece of software. Franson GPSGate will allow you to use the two programs together. http://gpsgate.com/support/using_a_garmin_gps_as_input
  3. I'm not a Wherigo guru by any means, but couldn't you just create a zone that if they enter it it causes a state that won't let them continue without going back to a starting point? If they enter the zone have a variable that causes the next zone to lead them right back to the prior zone.
  4. You will probably loose any custom settings but the new features and stability will make up for the time you will have to spend to get the settings back the way you like them.
  5. Lies. I am returning a coin to a fellow Geocacher this weekend (he is coming to Korea from Japan) and in January when I am back in the US some cachers are coming from Califorina to Arizona to get a coin of theirs that I found and have. The chances are that you won't see it again but if you contact some one who has your coin they are sure to return it. OK so maybe I should have said almost never. But in your case you just add another reason to release real coins. I doubt many folks would go out of their way to visit you and return a proxy coin. So you get to meet several other cachers that you might not have meet otherwise. Still a plus
  6. Just a quick thought provoking argument from someone who only releases real coins. Once you release a coin you will no longer ever see it again. If the coin is stolen you still won't see the coin again. If it doesn't get stolen you won't see the coin again. My point is that one you release a coin your connection to it only comes from the logs that it generates. You will find that the logs on a real coin vs a proxy are much more satisfying. And you still won't ever see the coin again.
  7. The stat bar runs on another server. It isn't updated in real time, I am not sure how often it is updated but the stat bar will be behind until such time as the servers are synched. It isn't very long, I think about 30 minutes is the longest I have seen.
  8. sometimes it takes some time for the stat bar to catch up
  9. I followed my father into the US Air Force. I served for six years with the 375th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron out of Scott AFB in Illinois. My brother was a in the US Navy. My children followed my lead, my daughter served in the US Air Force and my son is still currently serving in the US Marines in Fuji Japan.
  10. As to your days in a road cached, if you use field notes they are in Seattle time on some devices. So if you log early in the morning in Edinburgh it can still be the previous day in Seattle. That might account for the loss of consecutive days.
  11. To be "accurate" you want the GPS to indicate the level of your feet, thus the ability to "calibrate" it. Think about it, if an airplane calibrated to the height of its GPS you would be attempting to land 30 feet lower than the deck resulting in a really hard landing When you are calibrating an aircraft GPS you dial in the number ASL that is listed at the airport. This is done every time you preflight to account for barometric differences at the time of flight.
  12. I'm still interested. I plan on breaking the server when it comes time to award state and country souvi's. All 50 states and 9 countries, whoo hooo, can hardly sit still waiting.
  13. You must be well loved. They usually have my farewell events after I leave.
  14. Most of the caches I have placed have a strong first week when the locals find it. Then it will drop to a steady find every once in a while. Depending on the quality of the cache and the choice of location it can be once a month if I chose wrong or many times a week if I chose correctly. There will be a natural lull in finding at the start of the school year when families are more concerned with fall sports at high school and getting their younger children acclimated to the daily responsibilities of finishing school work, dealing with new friends and teachers etc. You didn't ask for it directly but since I am thinking you probably are wanting lots of finds let me offer these suggestions. A percentage of cachers is going to find your cache just for the smilie. This will be the one or two a month log that any cache will get. Then another group of cachers, those that have gotten over the "numbers matter" phase of the caching life will actually look at a cache page before seeking. They are looking for something to find outside of the cache. These are the people who want to see a nice view, interesting history, unusual something or other, or just a well done camo job. This is where you can influence the number of visits to your cache. A well done cache page will tell me why I want to visit your cache. This is where I decide if I am visiting your cache or another one down the road. Is your cache on a nice walking trail? Perhaps there is a good place to see birds nearby that is often overlooked? By looking at your cache page I think that you found a telephone pole that didn't have a cache near it and dropped a tape covered medicine vial. Not something I would go out of my way to find. What sets your cache apart from all the other caches in the area? One last note, your hint is much to long IMHO. I would put "Base of pole" Everything else you have in the hint should go in the body of the cache page. Thanks for placing a cache and participating in both sides of the game.
  15. Normally you would use it before you logged an attempt. Thus its position about the log attempt. Just a guess on my part.
  16. I just wanted to make an observation. The cacher was not "Jacked up" he was questioned or maybe wanted for questioning. Around here I am very lucky because the Kansas reviewer is a LEO. Please don't exaggerate the situation by using terms such as jacked up.
  17. I just looked at my DNF's 495 DNF logs with 4812 finds, greater than 10%
  18. Do you always post in the 3rd person I assumed it was XC posting.
  19. Yep, put me in the camp of people who think, if I look for it and did not find it, I log a DNF.
  20. My favorite is number of counties cached in. I am currently at 1090 counties in the US with a cache found in them.
  21. That would involve modifying Red Box property, so only do it if they give permission. And I expect they will not give permission. Sticking a magnet on the side of the machine would not damage nor modify their property. Although they may cart the machine away to replace or repair it, and your cache would go along with it! Ah but if you rented a Red Box DVD, removed the DVD and replaced an empty container you would have purchased the DVD after the 7 day rental period, and thus purchased the container. The Red Box is set up to allow you to retrieve an empty container if you lost yours thus allowing retrieval of the cache container. Besides I was just tryint to think outside of the box.
  22. I told LorrieBird once that when I come down to Florida to kayak with her I wanted a double kayak so she wouldn't embarras me. She told me that they were called divorce boats because they were so bad. I now know that for two people canoes are the way to go.
  23. I would think that this would violate the commercial clause of the guidelines. However if you created a cache container with one of the DVD cases you could have it retrieved using the empty case feature of the Red Box
  24. http://gmscripts.locusprime.net/Forum_Enhancements.html Is this the one you are looking for?
  25. Depending on when you go to Japan I have an event south of Tokyo later this month. http://coord.info/GC2GNM0
