  1. If you don't care about bells and whistles, and don't mind manual entry, you can still pick up a Magellan eXplorist 100 from a certain auction site for about 50 bucks.
  2. Definitely place it first. If it is disallowed you can pick it back up. Neither should you count on it necessarily taking a few days to publish. I've had caches publish in as little as two hours. You just never know.
  3. Very well put, and in retrospect, fits my hide experiences exactly.
  4. Being a new hider, I've tried to make some easy and some hard. I agree that a lot of hiking or legwork should not be met with a likely DNF, but all of mine are less than 1/2 mile and most are within feet of parking. Looking back on my dozen hides, I seem to lean towards 2 to 3 stars difficulty based on being tricky.....some say evil.
  5. I sure hope people do not hesitate to post DNF's. As a relatively new hider, I am looking for DNF's to tell me whether to check on it, adjust it's rating, adjust it's hiding spot, and gauge the fun factor. I will never get things right if I don't have a whole, true picture of what's going on for searchers. Folks.....post your DNF's. They are your friends. They will help the cache owners make this more fun for everyone.
  6. similar question.... A cacher mentions in his/her log that they took "the geocoin", but then does not "retrieve" it from the cache page. Other cachers see the icon, but find no coin. Since I was the last to "place" the coin there, I feel like someone may question my claims of dropping it off. I've messaged the "taker" once, but that was several weeks ago. Still the coin shows in the cache inventory. Any other suggestions?
  7. Something that I've noticed about email notifications, at least when I receive them, is that they may or may not be arriving at the same time that others receive them. One of my caching buddies frequently calls me to see if I'm going to find "the new cache that just came out". he frequently receives email notifications before I do. Sometimes there can be a long lapse in their arrival in my inbox. Just wondering out loud, here....... Maybe not all notifications are sent at the exact same time? This is absolutely the case. I started hidng just this past week. On my second hide, one of the early logs questioned how the cache "popped" on his device, he left the house within 10 minutes, drove a short distance to the site, found the cache, and found that he had been beaten by several minutes (maybe more). I absolutely did not inform anyone, nor do I even know the FTF cacher. So, this scenario can be the ONLY explanation.
  8. Thanks for all the great answers and clarification. I guess my wife and I will be at odds again about my collecting habits, err......money spending. (are there any Mother's Day coins?)
  9. Hello, I am a new geocacher. I found my first geocoin today, a beautiful Civil War #10. It is registered, so I will get it moving soon. This is certainly bitter-sweet, because as a habitual collector of things, I would like nothing more than to start a geocoin collection with it. I envision a beautiful display with my favorite, best looking, or most interesting coins gleeming under a spotlight with a fancy black velvet background. But, I guess there is no such thing as collecting geocoins? They are all meant to travel? In one aspect, it seems like a waste for these beautiful coins to spend most of there existence in a container, or waiting to be placed in one. Please set me straight on this. Thanks.
