  1. Hokay, I already have 4 GPSs but a mate of mine just gave me his old Magellan Gold. Who am I to offend him and refuse his kind offer It's loaded with Aus maps so that's a bonus........ It's got a 128MB SD card installed ( which I think contains the maps ) So some quick questions.... 1. On the About it shows: V4.51 Australia 1.02 Sept 29 2003 Basemap - Australia 1.02 Are these the latest versions ?? 2. It doesn't have the serial cable. Is there a way to load Waypoints onto the SD card and load them in ?? I've tried putting GPX , LOC and GS ( limit of 200 export ? ) files from GSAK onto the SD card but I doesn't see them if I go to Card utilities/Load WP Route Am I going to have to buy a serial cable ??? Any help greatly appreciated.
  2. Whatever you want... I use GSAK to "stratify" the caches into traditional, non-traditional and founds. You create the POI and copy it into your /<country>/ directory on the TomTom So I've got Trad.ov2 nontrad.ov2 found.ov2 You then have 3 different bmps ( to indicate the type ) Trad.bmp nontrad.bmp found.bmp On the tomtom go to preferences and somewhere you can show certain types of POIs , tick em and Bob's ya uncle !!
  3. After some ideas for some new caches. What are the most amusing/different caches ( either the most amusing find method , or most amusing cache/location ) you've found ( don't want the waypoints for them, just how they were executed ). I'm new ( 3 months ) and have hidden six, but want to do something different for the "older" caches to do for some payback :-) Thanks in advanced. Cheers. p.s. just thought the older cachers probably frequent here too, so perhaps you can PM them to me
  4. Being camera shy, there won't be a photo of me ( and well may you be thankful for that). It's the middle of winter down south here in Hobart Tasmania but while cold, the days are still pretty clear and beautiful. Nice enough to zap out at lunch and do a bit of caching. Found Meltdown #30 down on the banks of the River Derwent. Here's a photo of of him from the cache site with the Hobart's "iconic" Tasmanian Bridge in the background Since he wasn't too close to the water, took his "wetsuit" off for the photo As you can see, the weather is still pretty good, if only the temperature was a little bit warmer . Moving him on from "sea" to "summit" ( Just noticed that even though there's no photo of me, there's a fingerprint on him. You "septics" can't take the photo, blow up the picture, run the print till you find a match like on all those US Crime shows can you ) (p.s. Just noticed that Mr Jiffy is actually Canadian....... there goes my chances of winning anything )
  5. What happens when you change a cache's name after it's been listed and ppls have found ?? I've just done it to mine but then thought what are the consequences ???? What happens to the listing on their finds etc ?? Have I done a silly thing ???
  6. It can be done. Here's how I've done it. 1. Become premium member 2. Download caches GPX files into GSAK 3. What I've done is filtered into traditional caches, then create a TOMTOM Poi file using export called TRADGEO.OV2 , I've created a BMP based on the GC Logo ( TRADGEO.BMP ). 4. Create a non-tradtional cache TOMOM POI using export called NONTRAD.OV2 and created a different BMP NONTRAD.OV2 ( it's the same logo with a yellow quadrant ) rather than a green one. 4a. Multi/puzzle etc are a bit hard to do on the fly as you normally need the information from the listing but sometimes......... 5. Copy these files to ( and I'm going by memory ) /maps/country ( you'll be able to see the normal OV2 files there ). You then at least have a copy of waypoints with the name of the cache ( though the name is only available via browse map not from the navigation screen ). As you're navigating along ( I normally do in 2d mode if I'm caching ) you'll be able to see caches as they're coming up. when you get near a cache, follow the arrow till you're close to the cache symbol and then go to the browse map mode, use the blue arrow in the top RH of the screen to keep track of where you are. Once you're on top of the cache, find it If you having problems, then go back to the navigation screen, press on the satellite signal and then on the battery indicator and you'll get large lat/long reading. You can then match it up either with the details you've already prepared or the waypoint from the browse map screen. Works fine for me when I haven't got my Ipaq/Navman combo with me. You won't get any clues or anything like that, but for a quick and dirty traditional cache it works pretty well. i know it sounds complicated but I've found a few cache just using the Tomtom on the spur of the moment. Hope this helps. p.s make the on the go waypoint a favourite is one way round your issue
  7. Yes you can. Not as good as a "non-road" GPS but useable. Bit of work though. 1. Become a premium member on GC 2. Use Pocket Queries to download your GPX's into GSAK. 3. Create Tomtom POI files using GSAK. I've created a "traditional" and and "other" cache POI file with different POI symbols. 4. You can now drive along ( usually in 2d mode ) and see caches around you. 5. When you find a cache you want, go to it . Once you're close, use the "browse map" function to get close to the point. Push the blue arrow in the top right hand of the screen once and a while to update your position. You should be able to find a cache this way. 6. If you're still having problems, get close to the cache and then go back to the main screen, press the satellite section on the main screen then hit the battery part of the screen. This will give you lat/long in "large" text. You can move around till you get to the exact coordinates. Hope this all helps . Contact me if you need more assistance or help.
  8. Here you go Mizdeeds, fantastic job. I love it. No problems if I print off some sig stickers to put when I find caches ??? Thanks again. Fidjit
  9. Hokay My caching name is Fidjit, but truth is I don't even know how you'd represent a fidjit This nick started when I started baiting a 649er. Fidjit stood for F(*ken Idjit I didn't realise how seriously I'd get into caching when I signed up , but since I've found and hidden a few don't want to change my nick here. Normally my login would be Limbot ( Z80 inside ). What I'd like is a cartoon robot geocaching........ Anybody willing to give it a go ??
  10. Have a look at BeelineGPS. Holds all the cache info, hints and last few logs. Also can then do tracking/guidance to Waypoints. Only thing it doesn't support is topo maps as far as I can see. I'm mucking around with Oziexplorer for proper maps , then Beeline for waypoint/cache management. Cheers.
  11. Thanks guys, a bit counterintuitive ( or is it just me ). Figured you'd do everything to do with the trackables from the trackable item area. Noted that you can't place the geocoin when you edit an existing find ( I'd already logged the finds ), so had to put a new note. Thanks again.
  12. I've come across a few trackable geocoins which I've now logged under the trackables. I can find out to put an entry to retrieve the item but how do I put that I've placed in another cache. If I go to "Found it/Log it" again, the only options I get are "Write Note" or "Discovered it". How do I do <Finder> "placed it in " <cachename> Thanks in advanced....
  13. or Transylvania I've had a couple of offers for help from members. I'm about to contact them to see what we can organise . Thanks for all the help all
  14. As they say, it's not the destination, but the journey. After further reading wondering if a travel bug might be a better option. Cheaper outlay and less "collectable" ;D If I can find somebody who is willing to help, might assist to have a tag added to the bug or coin saying " Destination Tasmania Australia GCXXXX". Would love to put on the trackable description where it's going and perhaps have people take a picture of it with them near a prominent landmark for their area............ Anybody out there willing to help ?????
  15. Just had a thought while reading through the geocoin threads. Has anybody done this before ?? ( Sorry I'm a bit of a newbie at this ) I'd like to buy a geocoin from overseas ( not in Australia ) and have it delivered via Geocaching. So seller gives me the tracking number and I log, the seller puts it in a cache and (hopefully ) eventually it gets to me in one of my caches here in Tasmania Australia ?? Saves me on shipping fees which can prohibitive Done before ?? Good idea ??? Anyone wanna help
  16. You need to download Activesync from Microsofts website if you're running XP Pro. If you're running Vista you need Windows Mobile Device centre. Again available from Microsofts download web site. This becomes the "conduit" for loading programs like Cachemate for offline cache information. You run the cachemate executeable and then when you connect your Ipaq, Activesync/Mobile Centre will synchronise Cachemate to your Ipaq. Hope this helps.
  17. Dunno if this helps you but here's my take on the Tom Tom One 3rd http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=190086 Hope it helps !
  18. I received a Tomtom One 3rd Edition as a sales reward recently. I don't really need it for street navigation very often so was trying to "justify" keeping it. I remember reading about Geocaching and came across this site :-) However, after reading all the Tomtom One 3rd edition threads here , it appear that a majority of people "poo pooed" this unit for caching. Undetered, I set about trying the unit out on a couple of caches today. If it didn't work, I'd whack in ebay and buy an Etrex or Gecko. The result, two found caches this morning. One was quite easy and about 20 m off a road, one was deep in the bush. Don't know if this procedure will help anybody, but looks like I'll be keeping this one: 1. Use geocache to find the relevant cache 2. Go to "other conversions" 3. Go to "Google maps" 4. Press "Send" to "GPS" ( assuming you've installed Tomtom Home ) 5. Choose " Save as Favourite" 6. Navigate to/near the site. 7. Go to "Browse Map" 8. "Find" 9. "Favourite" 10. Choose the cache your looking for. 11. Pretty much follow the arrow till you're on the yellow star that marks the cache. 12. Once you're on the yellow star then press "Done" and go to the default 3D view 13. Press the GPS Signal section of the Screen 14. Press the GPS/Battery section of the Screen 15. Walk around till the (large ) on screen co-ords match. 16. Find the cache :-) This probably isn't the best way of doing it, but it appears to work. Hopefully this might help people use the 3rd for caching. Note that the unit I'm using is the Australian one. YMMV !
