  1. Try GCZ4QV - that's close to where you'll be. If you have time, do GCKC9G - Ted the Boardwalk Beagle. That's within walking distance, and along the boardwalk, of where the cruise ships dock in Halifax (near Pier 21) and it will take you on a tour of the Halifax waterfront - Theodore Tugboat, the Historic Properties shopping area, the food court, etc. Look for caches near these two to start.
  2. Fathom it is. Take it away!
  3. If you hold your arms straight out to your sides, it is considered to be about six feet from fingertip to fingertip. What measurement term is traditionally measured this way?
  4. Long rope, knots tied approx every 47 feet, with a weight on the end. You throw the rope overboard, time the rope paying out for a set amount of time (I think half a minute), and count the number of knots that pay out in that time. Supposed to be roughly equivalent to your speed. Having 2 brothers, a sister, and a brother-in-law in the Navy (a daughter in the Army and a brother-in-law who oversees building big tugboats) you learn a few things by osmosis. Nothing that really matters, though
  5. That's the one. Hamgran and I were just discussing this cache last week! Over to you!
  6. I would never have remembered Schomberg. It's Friday, it's supposed to be a top-notch weekend weatherwise for caching, so I don't want to tie anyone down to their computers. An easy question: What's the name of the lowest (deepest? as in, altitude) geocache in existence?
  7. I think I was headed to CFB Borden to see my daughter's ceremonies. But the name of the town escapes me.
  8. I think it's in Ontario - I can see it, I just can't remember where I was!
  9. 2happy2gether and Landsharkz can duel it out - almost every minute of my time from 9 am today until sometime on Monday afternoon is spoken for.
  10. Actually, it was the Memorial Plaque from WWI, given by the King to the next-of-kin of service members of the British Commonwealth who died during the war. It was apparently taken to be an insult, so the award didn't last long - the families considered their sons' lives to be worth more than a penny, which was what this plaque looked like. There are a few in Canada in museums, probably more in private hands.
  11. I thought the military buffs would know this one easily. It's a slang term for a specific award, that no one wanted to receive .
  12. I'm looking for a specific item, not the general term.
  13. I don't think all five in Halifax still stand - I'm pretty sure that two by the harbour are long gone. And I'm almost sure there's one standing in NB as well. But, I'll take the baton and ask: What is the dead man's penny?
  14. They were built as fortifications for the military, but I don't think they were ever actually used for their intended purpose. (My brother, a Navy PO, claims they were used as "fornication" sites - but I never said he could spell! ) I'd have to google to find out how many are left, so this ends my answers. They're neat to see - I've been to the Prince of Wales one in Halifax.
  15. Kingston had 6. I only know this because they had one more than Halifax!
  16. As a quick note - Harvestfest would be scheduled for Saturday August 25th as that's the weekend of the Harvest Festival in town.
  17. We're starting to plan for this year's Harvestfest event, and have had some talk from various people that we should change a few things due to last year's accident. Hamgran and I have a difference of opinion on some of these things, so we're throwing the gauntlet down to other cachers for opinions. And please - we seriously want any and all opinions on this subject as we don't want to go through the work of plannng the event and have only half a dozen people show up due to being uncomfortable with the date/time/venue/location/memories. So - what do you think? If we plan it, will you come? Why or why not?
  18. OK, I'm going to list my 6 (even though that shot is over - some of us gotta work, y'know ). Lobster - Shediac NB Dinosaur - Drumheller ALTA Bee - Falher ALTA Easter egg - Vegreville ALTA Pirogy - Glendon ALTA Cuckoo clock - Kimberley BC And there's the nickle, the loonie, the toonie, the tomato, the elephant, the guitar.... You get the picture.
  19. I can name 6 more, and none of them duplicate these. What are the criteria for the question?
  20. One thing one of our local troops did was to approach a wholesaler that dealt in water softener salt, and work out an agreement with them to buy the salt at the wholesale price. They presold the salt for about the same price as the dealers do, with a delivery date scheduled, but the delivery included taking the bags right to the softener. They sold a lot of salt to the seniors in this town, and it was one of the most profitable ventures they tried.
  21. (I know this one, as I have cousins there that we tease about being airheads .) No idea on the elevation though, so I'm not telling.
  22. 3? Other than Mont Royal, I have no idea what they're called.

  24. I had only met Tony a couple of times, so I really didn't know him all that well. Still, Tony spent part of Harvestfest trying to convince me to come to GHAGAFAP next month. I told him I had already booked my flight for the Shellfish Festival in Charlottetown, and he replied that this wasn't a problem as I could go down to the waterfront on Saturday morning for a breakfast of clams and still make it to GHAGAFAP by supper! Always friendly, always with a twinkle in his eye. When I heard the news that the accident could have been him, I was so shocked and so sure it couldn't have been. Our prayers are with his family at this time. He will be sorely missed by everyone.
  25. Although there's no glow-in-the-dark tape, "Yggdrasil" (GCP7ZY) is a night cache that gets rave reviews (then again, I'm biased ).
