  1. Thank you Mimhs and Brevetoskylo. I'll use the information you have provided to make a good geocaching walk for Sunday afternoon and evening and one for monday evening incase I happend to get some spare time. Thanks also for clarifying about the metro.
  2. Next month I'll be visiting Athens on a short business trip and would like to log a few caches in this extremely important city throughout our history. I'm not hunting nubers and rather spend time around a few good caches than hunting as many as possible while in Athens. I'll be staying close to the Metro-station Syntagma but don't know anything about getting around in Athens. Is there any "good" caches within walking distance (1-2 km) worth visiting. Is the metro system easy to use? In that case are there other good caches reachable via metro? Is there any day or week passes and do they allow travel to and from the airport? I'll be visiting Athens 22nd to 24th September but will probably only be able to geocache on the afternoon / evening of the 22nd. I hope someone is kind and answers some of my questions.
  3. I know this is an old thread but I thought I should let people reading this thread know that I have tried to write down what geocaching has done for me and my son who is suffering from severe autistic spectrum disorder. If you want to check it out go to http://shadowcacher.wordpress.com and I recomend starting at the first post if you want the history from when we received his diagnose.
  4. Thanks Keystone. That was more or less what I was looking for.
  5. Hello, Behind this nickname you find me and my son. We have been around for 3 years now but never done a proper introduction. I think this part from another thread says the most about us: One of my goals with geocaching is to show my son as much as possible of the world while my body is strong so I plan on 2-4 weeks traveling with him each year to new destinations every time.
  6. Can you do the same operation on you "1001-cache" to switch their places again?
  7. Last year I bought a ride that wont be used for anything else than my and my sons geocaching trips. Last year I went over all metal and mechanical parts. This year I'll get a kitchen and 2 beds in it and if time is on my side I'll have it repainted. It's a 1972 VW type 2 panel bus with "low" mileage.
  8. Geocaches with assigned favorite points has of course higher possibility to be a “must visit” cache but I see in my town how caches close to tourist attractions get a lot of favorite points from tourists but non from locals.
  9. I'm at the moment looking at different ways of making this happen. First "beta" solution would be a free forum hosting service where ambassadors may post under appropriate category and other users may contact them through pm, that way there is no need to give out the e-mail address of ambassadors unless they want to do it themselves. Keeping it simple in the beginning is a must. Is Travel Agency for Geocachers a good forum name?
  10. This will be a longer post than normal as I’m still trying to gather my thoughts in the subject. I’m a father of a severely autistic son that loves following me out on a drive or a hike in the woods and this made us pick up geocaching a few years ago as our hobby. This also made me make an promise to show my son as much as possible of the world while my body is fit enough to handle the adventures so lately I’ve started planning on a few weeks of travel a year with geocaching (quality not quantity) as the main objective. Traveling with my son requires quite a bit of planning to keep the trip within his comfort-zone and as I’m less interested in the typical tourist places I started to look after Geocaching Ambassadors or “Travel Agency for Geocachers” but I’m not having any luck finding what I’m looking for. One other community I’m member of has “break-down” lists with people spread nationwide with access to tools, garage or knowledge incase others in the community would have an break-down when running around in our vehicles. Another community has Ambassadors world-wide that I can take contact with if I wish to have a guided tour of their “neighborhood”. So I was thinking about Geocaching Ambassadors (sorry if this has been trademarked for something else) that you could find by sorting on language spoken (eng, fra, spa) – continent – county / state and then “home coordinates” with a “operational range” who has volunteered to provide simple help to out of town people. I’m thinking about services like (but not limited to) recommending “must visit” caches / places, coordinates to grocery store, coordinates to suitable camping / RV parking, links to webpage about busses and trains in the area and in worst case help with local authorities if needed. I know there probably is this kind of lists in local / national geocaching communities but I really have a hard time finding them and when I find them they are likely to be in a language I don’t understand. It would be easy to put up a forum with ambassadors if people seem to like the concept but would be worthless if people don’t use it. I know my need of planning is a bit too much for most people but am I the only one that would use that kind of service? Or have I just missed one that is available online? Comments?
  11. Some of the scenery me and my autistic son have found while out geocaching.
  12. I'm geocaching with my seriously autistic son and there is more or less 2 reasons. The short term gain is that he really enjoys going for walks in the woods as well as riding around in the car and we have discovered that these trips tends to keep him pleased and he is sleeping much better after an evening of caching. In other words, it brings a piece of tranquility to the family. The long term gain is that we are all the time trying new things and pushing the boundary futher away from the life in the livingroom. I've noticed a significant change in how he observes things out in the nature, it has become much easier to enter unknown places, out in the nature he may even try food he has never tased before. We have "evolved" from trips no more than 30 minutes from the safty of home to 8 days long trips in the mountains and sleeping in tents. 3 years ago we would never have concidered flying with my son and now we have booked a 12 hour long flight to the sun next winter
  13. I've been cecking out my caches today efter the winter to make sure they are in good condition and in one I found this : http://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/c157af...82484e373c8.jpg The cache is located in a tranquil area and the pipe was put in the plastic bag together with some chocolate in wraps that I didn't even bother examining. I guess a non-geocacher wanted to share ...
  14. This is a crosspost from the swedish forum so if you are frequent visitor there it's no use continuing reading. I'm geocaching together with my autistic son and it has been a complete success giving both him and me qualities in life that noone could guess would be possible so I have been asked to hold a lecture for a group of fathers to autistic children. The problem is the lack of time as I have my hands full at work and verry little time over at the evenings after the kids go to bed to organize this as good as I wish it will be. So I'm asking the comunity for contributions and I'm thankfull for every little help I might get. I'm looking for links to good sites, geocaching articles, pictures with the "soul" of geocaching, notes from previous lectures ... anything you can think of that could help me fill 30-40 minutes with good, fun, inspiring materials about this lovely game. Thanks in advance, Galdrin
  15. I had a fast look at his/her finds, and what strikes me is why haven't he logged more finds if he only sits at home and logs the caches with a cut and paste frase? Could it be that he actually does visit GZ but doesn't bother with looking for the cache? In my oppinion he or she still misses the "treasure" part of the hunt, but then again maybee he thinks that the view at GZ is more of a treasure?
  16. Never mind. I got the answer from an other forum. It's an kinder egg toy with a serialnumber on it That one really fooled me for a month...
  17. Is this a geocoin or any other trackable in any way? It has a 6 digit serial on it but I can't seem to log it anywhere. If anyone has seen something like this before please let me know what it is. Thanks in advance /Galdrin Edit: Sorry about the fast post, should ofcourse have been in the GC part of the forum, could an admin please move it?
