  1. Paul, Can you tell me where I could find this coordinate search function you speak of? Thanks!
  2. It was very similar to the other benchmark disks I've seen except instead of the Geodetic Survey it is stamped with the US Geological Survey around the edge and 1941 under the GWM38. As far as coords go I didn't think to set my eTrex on it to get those (like I said I'm a newb) but the cache listing has coords of N 37° 01.989 W 119° 43.309. I have to assume those are pretty accurate but I can't vouch for them because the cache owner supplied them and I didn't have to break out the GPS to find the cache. The benchmark is literally four feet from the cache. Here's a link to the photo I took of it... Mystery USGS benchmark
  3. So I found cache GC1HN58 yesterday afternoon and within a few feet there is a benchmark. I'm really new to benchmarking so I'm not sure how to really look these up but when I click the "Find nearby benchmarks" link the closet on is almost two miles away so I don't know where to log this particular one. The benchmark disc has GWM38 stamped into it but I don't know what that means. I'm so confused!! Can someone please help me figure out what I'm doing and why I am an idiot?
  4. What is the difference between Travel Bugs and Travel Bugs for hitchikers? They seem to be pretty much the same thing to me. If this is a dumb question you can blame it on my newbness! Thanks!
  5. I think that would be hilarious but I'm a big fan of creepy crawlies and a chance encounter with a ticked off rattlesnake would not deter me too much. I'd keep my distance, realize it wasn't alive, then think "Hmm, fake snake very close to cache coordinates? Maybe I'll take a look!" It's the caches with things inside that move or jump out at you that get me. I almost ruined my pants at a rattlesnake themed cache where a springy, noise making snake jumped out of the pill bottle!
  6. The most valuable thing we (I cache with "shoot the zombie in the brain") have found was in a cache just last night. On our way to GCPZQA I got the "low battery" signal on my eTrex so I stopped in at a gas station to get a Gatorade and some double A's. A pair of Duracells were $5.99! When you need something, you need it, so I gripe to my buddy and drink my Gatorade to cool off. Five minutes later we find the cache and inside is a log, a shell, and two double A's! Not a super expensive item but it sure was frustrating to open that little box and see fresh batteries staring back at me!

    Newb

So I bought an eTrex Legend on Monday, found two caches last night and almost found another one. I say almost because we pretty much know where it is but need a raft to get there. We could swim but if you saw this water and all the dead things in it you would get a raft as well. Anyway, the way we're doing this is from the satellite screen, basically just driving towards the cache until the coordinates are close and then walking it. I don't have a computer with the right serial port to connect to the eTrex so I havn't even bothered figuring out how to download stuff into it. Is there a better way to do this than what we are already doing? Thanks!!
