Hello- I am thinking about the M Droid cell phone and the tech at verizon store did not have geo ? answers- anyone out there know if this could be used for our geocaching?? we curently use Garmin rino 530s' and what would the droid add to our adventures? thanx! :)

I just got a Droid and am playing around with geobeagle and cachemate. I'm using an additional program to cut down on the sensitivity of the compass and gps. Did my first caching with the droid last weekend. the cachemate compass brought me directly to 2 of the 3 caches, and off by about 2 yards on the third. Geobeagle was very close on all three.

The interface of both take a little bit to get used to, I plan on checking them out more this or next weekend depending on the weather.

Geobeagle and [removed] are free, cachemate is $8.00

[reference to unauthorized application removed by moderator.] Groundspeak is currently working on an app for the droid platform similar to the one that they have for the iphone. :)

  3. I have an eTrex Venture HC, but my husband has a HTC Droid Eris - they pair up great together, since my GPS and compas seems to be a bit more accurate, but with his, we can access the webpage and check for any hints while still going paperless. His GPS and compas is certainly accurate enough that we could cache with JUST it, too, but I like having my own toy.

We've tried several different programs - everything from a basic compas, to the more developed things like geobeagle (which we liked). None of them are perfect, and you'll have to play around to figure out which one you like, but there's about a dozen caching programs in the droid apps store, so you should be able to find something you like. Plus - I believe an official Groundspeak app for android is comming out in the next couple months.

I am using the moment....which runs on the android platform.....and I have tried geobeagle, cachemate and (removed) none of them are perfect....they get you in the area, but I am looking to buy a new gpsr to buddy up to my phone.....that. being said (reference to unauthorized application removed) has a great linkup to gc.com....and that is great!!!! And I wouldn't give up my Android for anything....you are gonna love the phone....

  5. After owning a Garmin Streetpilot 2620 GPS for my car for about 3 years or so, by accident I figured out I can manually add map coordinates into it. I also tried for the heck of it, hooking it up to my computer and can download cache locations into it to and they show up as waypoints, which is awesome. I also added maps to my GPSMap 60cxs.

So now I have the best of both worlds, I can load my days cache hunts to my car GPS, use it to get me to the general area, sometimes right to the cache if its roadside, and my handheld for the offroad caches once my car gps takes me to them.

Got to love undocumented features huh.

I have a 2610 that is just in storage and I use the rino 530 HCx for my caching- can u pm me some info on how to use the SP 2610 to ge me close on the streets then use the handheld for the find?? any tricks here??

  6. I do the same I load all caches near the area where I will be to my streetpilot 2610 and map76cs. Comes in handy since the streetpilot does a littl better job of getting you close on the street then use the handheld to walk the rest.

  7. I recently got 3 Rino 530 HCX and have several issues with them. The biggest issue is that they are easily 200 feet off and thus are unusable for Geocaching. I'm in contact with Garmin and have now tried several things that were suggested by them (autolocating, resetting). Normally I wouldn't look at my walking speed, but today I happened to look at it while testing the units again. I noticed that all three units were showing 0 for speed while my 60 CSx was showing between 1.7 and 2.3 miles/hour. During my 20 minute walk the Rinos would only from time to time (every 30-60 seconds) show a speed and then they would most often show a higher speed then the 60 CSx. Has anyone seen this before? Could that be related to the problem I'm having?

My wife and I both use the Rino 530 HCx and the kids have the etrex- our units are dead on 95% of the time and had no known problems since Feb 2008- I checked walking speed and both were good today- so yes there is hope- we love the units!

  8. You do it when logging the cache.

When you make the cache log, whether it's a Found It or a Note or whatever, there's a drop down box lower on the page where you can select the TB(s) to place at that time. It will automatically make a blank log on the TB page that it's been placed. You can then edit that blank log to add text if you'd like.

If you've already made your log for the cache, there isn't a way to put the TB in after the fact without making another log. When this happens, people just post a second note to the cache simply writing "Bug Drop" or something similar. If you want, you can delete that note afterwards and the TB will still be placed in the cache.

Thank you_ I'll check this out and appreciate the advice!! :)

Here is a questions for you; If you were Garmin, would you invest a ton of additional money into the Colorado when the next generation chip-set is already out or would you simply roll that money into the next generation GPSr?

Who knows? Maybe there will be a Colorado 300/400 "x" version in the future. Maybe it will offer more bang for the buck with enhanced and added features? Don't bet on Garmin adding all, or even any, of your wish list features. The Colorado is what it is. It all comes down to individual preferences. Are you willing to give up certain features for the new ones on the Colorado? If you answer yes, buy yourself a new Colorado and have fun. If your answer is no, stick with what you already have, or get a 60csx or one of the HCx's, and have fun.

If they simply abandon the CO and bring out a new model---would anyone even buy it considering the black eye that Garmin now bears?? Even early adopters are smarter than that. Fool me once................ This would be a good time for Magellan to bring out a killer model.

BTW, an hour after I sent my previous squawk about Garmin CO repair service (been 4 weeks without my CO and no feedback from service department), a new CO arrived on my front porch. I did an immediate battery life test with previously used batteries---the thing shut down at 2.56 volts! this means that the CO is still rejecting batteries with lots of remaining energy. This is a bad sign-- battery life is not likely to be any better than before. Looks like it will be going back to the dealer for a refund. Anybody want some full size SD cards?

You Can send those SD cards to me as I can use them in my new 530HCx- great unit! and in need of a card!!

  10. Is this tooo ancient or will the Palm 3 work for geocaching?? ;)

i have a palm IIIe and was wondering the same

Looks like we're in! Trailgators sent me to a site with lots of good info.- let me know if you get any more info and I'll do the same.

  11. Is this tooo ancient or will the Palm III work for geocaching-??
Nope, it has enough memory to do the job. If you are buying one then there are better options. If you already own it then it's not worth buying another one.

I had it stored in my desk collecting dust- and looked behind my screen and the cradle is still hooked up- need to dust it off and get new batteries but it's in great shape- what's my next step on learning?? thanx for your help.

Awesome! Here is a great site loaded with info!

Went to the site- thanx- it is filled with info!!

  13. It will work as long as you have a Serial Port on your computer. The Palm models, starting with the Palm m500 are better because most of those connect with USB. The Palm m500 can also have an SD card to hold even more data.

I have used Cachemate for more than three years and like it although others recommend Plucker.

Ok- thanx- this is hooked up to my computer- I was just sitting at work and thought that I still had this and yes it was in my desk and the cradle is still hooked up!! so I guess I should learn about this- need some new batteries and dust it off - any suggestions on where to learn?

  14. Press and hold the Mark button and then edit the coordinates for the waypoint you just created.

    GO$Rs

Thank you- just got done playing around and with the use of the remote it was easier to load- found out my touck screen needed reset- will be nice to use this then when close I'll turn on the new 530HCx

  15. I have a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 which I use to navigate by road to to either the general vacinity or parking coordinates and then use a 60CSx to hike to the cache.

Loading caches to the 2610 is done using Mapsource. You can upload .gpx PQ's into MS and then download them to the 2610 in the same way you would load a 60CSx or Vista.

    Does this help?

Yes and thank you- I'm learning!

  17. Hello- in a past discussion I read that someone would load coords into their pilot 2610 and use that-- then when close to location they would go to the handheld! I was on hold to long with Garmin- anyone that could explain how to load them on the pilot i would appreciate it!!
