  1. quote:Originally posted by Maeglin:Version 2.3 of http://www.smittyware.com/palm/cachemate/ was released today <big snip>. Thank you for your outstanding support and frequent upgrades. This program has really added to my fun factor of caching, which is the whole point!
  2. quote:Originally posted by robertlipe:Is it your intent to have both on the same physical port and just select both software and hardware (via cable insertion or switchbox) when you want to change? Yes, that will work. Thanks, this is the option I would use. Since posting this (and a little before) I searched and read more forums regarding Garmin and Magellan. It seems for every six that swear by Garmin, a half dozen like Magellan. It also appears that the eTek line, and maybe Vista in particular have what might be some quality control issues. One unit works fine, the next is problem plagued. Generally I've had good luck with "remanufactured" electronics, including my first StreetPilot. But this Vista is problem plagued, nevertheless, I will wait for a Garmin response-- hopefully they do respond to email inquiries-- before making the new purchase. And I also see that there is an option for a hard reset. And I can upgrade my firmware. So I am learning. Thanks for your reply and Mike's too.
  3. I have a Garmin StreetPilot that I use in my car and on my motorcycle. Last summer I bought a remanufactured eTrek Vista and subsequently discovered geocaching. The eTrek now seems to be failing-- terrible accuracy compared to other people I have cached with and it shuts it self off every few minutes. The electronic compass is basically useless even with recalibration often. It never seemed very accurate compared to a Magellan. Those problems, mushy buttons, clik stick that is weird, and no response from Garmin have soured me on the unit. Now color in the Magellan line have me considering one. I definitely will keep the Streetpilot and the Mapsource software. What I want to know is will a Magellan and Garmin work together on the same PC in terms of serial ports, etc. I know I can select different GPSr in the EasyGPS software so I think it should be okay. But I was interested to know if anyone has actually done it. Thanks.
  4. quote:Originally posted by Kealia:<Snip> BTW, I saw the stick you did for Marky today at an Event Cache. VERY IMPRESSIVE I agree that it is a first class walking stick. I tried to abscond with it by Marky was keeping a close eye out. But I did rest my tired weary old guy bones on it for a while after the GPS games. BTW, the picnic was a great success and it was wonderful to meet so many involved in geocaching. Now if I could have just gotten away with that walking stick....
  5. Solution: Reinstall Windows 98SE. Also cleared up some other problems. Thanks for the ideas.
  6. Disabled VirusScan and Zone Alarm. Same error message. Disabled all running processes that I could-- no error message, but MS installer would not run. Tried to run in Safe Mode, but remembered that the CD is not recognized. USB does work on Win 98. Even back to Win 95SE or whatever they called it. Still stuck.
  7. I checed with Palm, they referred me to Microsoft. I tried using its knowledge base, but got no where. I figure this is kid's play for someone on this forum. When I try to install the Palm desktop program from the CD that came with my Zire 71, I get the error: Fatal Exception 06 @ 0028:00000075. I also get the same error when I try to install the latest version from the Palm site. I have Win 98SE with 256 mg ram on a 5 year old HP Pavilion 6860C. I've kept it up to date with the MS and VirusScan updates. I had Palm 4.1 on the machine, but when I tried to install the program from the CD the error consistently shows up. I've uninstalled the program, and edited the registry to take out leftovers. I've run a bunch of utilities off the web and the machine returns no errors for memory or disk. Sure would appreciate some assistance fixing this. Thanks. [This message was edited by MotorBug on October 01, 2003 at 04:39 PM.]
  8. quote:Originally posted by RobAGD:Robert, This goes again to UI. <quote>I have no idea why I keep seeing recepies this complicated. With only trivial scripting, you can combine many of these things into one command of arbitrary complexity - and even if you couldn't, GPSBabel can write multiple files in one shot. So you could write a batch file that spun a GPX file to Mapsource, S&T, give everything sensible names, and even do the serial upload all in one shot if that's your gig.</quote> Rember that over 90% of computer users are windows users and have no idea how to manipulate a CLI. Some dont want to, some dont know how, some just dont liek screwing with it. -Robert Robert (ROB AGD) sums it up. At one time I could write a decent batch file in DOS-- even liked it and passed on Win 3.1. Finally got Win 95 when it was that or get off the world. Lately I borrowed a batch file from Marky to modify. I just don't remember all the commands and parameters for this stuff. Have to dig out a dusty book I guess. I also see that I will have to read the directions on these programs. Amazing what is in there! Thanks for all the hints and help!
  9. This is something I've been looking to do, but am unable to make it work as suggested. I have MS Street & Trips 2001. I've not "upgraded" as the 2002 version dropped my home street. (Haven't checked since.) But I wonder if that might be the problem of not being able to import a .csv file. Or is there another format I should use in gpsbabel? I'm also wondering how all the programs fit together... 1. use a pocket query and get a gpx file. 2. use watcher (or Utopia?) to open them on my PC. Still struggling with changing things there. Is there a preference of programs for this portion? Some how the waypoints have gone away and all I have are abbreviations. That's sorta okay, but sometimes difficult to find a cache page with just the abbreviation. 3. I use CacheMate to open the gpx on my Palm. This is a real nice solution for the Palm. 4. Run the flie through spinner (Not sure why) 5.Run the spinner file through gps babel to get it to a MS S&T, Mapsource, etc format? By now the file is much smaller than the gpx file, so I wonder what is lost. So far, I've had to get the file to MapSource by uploading from my eTrek. Must be a better way. What I really would like to do is get waypoints into S&T. Thanks for any help with my obvious confusion. 90 caches in one month and luvin' everything except the poison oak
  10. Thanks for your quick turnaround on updates. Truly an amazing service for seven bucks!
  11. Thanks for all the input. I went back and changed the DNF I had changed to a found back to a DNF and logged a new entry. Geeze, its great not to be perfect!
  12. Its probably covered elsewhere, but I didn't find it here or in the Getting Started forum. What is the geo-etiquette for logging a find on a previous logged DNF? Change the previous DNF entry (a few days ago) to a find, or make a new entry? [This message was edited by MotorBug on September 14, 2003 at 10:09 PM.]
  13. quote:Originally posted by Maeglin:Using the Find dialog, you mean? That's a Palm OS bug, fixed in 4.0 and later... not much I can do about it. Ah, well now I know. My OS version is 3.5 More reason to get that Zire 71!!!
  14. 4. Up to 5 is all that's in the GPX files :-) Oh, well, a bit confusing, as the CacheMate option can go to 10.
  15. And one more thing.... When I search the cache list by waypoint, it won't find it. I have to enter the name.
  16. As long as there is a "wish list" going... 1. Have the "Nearest Caches" search stay in the category selected, specifically "Not Found." 2. Make the scroll button (on my Palm IIIxe work in the nearest caches found section. 3. Return to nearest caches after looking at a cache found in that section. 4. When I select import 10 prior logs, it only imports 5. Thanks for all your work on this program.
  17. Magelin: I've run my first pocket query tonight. I made a query for the closest 400 "not found" caches. During the sync on my Palm IIIxe (with lots of memory left) it locks up when it gets to the screen that asks me where to file the "unfiled" caches. I select "not found" from the drop down list. As soon as I do that, he screen goes blank. Then I have to do a hard reset. The weird part is that the caches are then in the Not Found section. Another piece of the puzzle. If I close CacheMate and use some other application, when I come back it brings me to the screen wanting to know where I want to file the "unfiled" caches, and if I select Not Found, it repeats. If I cancel, the records go to "Not Found" as intended. But the records that were in "Owned" are now in "Not Found." Thanks for any hints.
  18. fizzymagic, The MS Streets & Trips coordinates did work okay. I had messed up putting them in, probably without a comma between. The format returned with the "location sensor" looks like 37.01234 North, 122.45678 West. The cursor works as the sensor, so you have to copy the numbers-- won't allow for a copy and paste, contrary to what I said originally. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks again.
  19. quote:Originally posted by fizzymagic: quote:Originally posted by MotorBug:I cut and paste coordinates into it and nothing happens. I tried the so-called solutions from the thread Getting Started:Address converts to coordinates. If I had the faintest idea what you are talking about, I would try to help. GeoCalc needs a single string containing coordinates in lat/long or UTM format. It doesn't do addresses. Sorry, I wasn't clear on what I was trying to do. In MS Streets & Trips, once I find an address, I use the location sensor feature to determine the coordinates. When I put those coordinates in GeoCal no conversion happened. Of course now it does work, so I was entering incorrectly. Thanks, great program!
  20. This lifetime I would like to have a FTF. I signed up for the New Cache Alert Service <ncas@rusticweb.com> but by the time I get the notice, someone has found it HOURS ago. How do they do that?
  21. This is the stuff promoted by Paul Harvey. I stopped in to get some, but it is $40 bucks! I can itch a bit for that. Has anyone tried it? Here is some info from paulharvey.com: Zanfel™ Poison Ivy Wash is a safe and effective topical solution for poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. It is the only product known to remove urushiol, the toxin responsible for the reaction, from the skin after bonding, enabling the affected area to immediately begin healing. After using Zanfel, the itching and pain are the first things to be relieved, usually within 30 seconds.
