  1. Operation Ice Walk 2007 Or you could try this! The sister event to this one has not been approved yet but will take place the next day 2 hours further south. Should be a fun weekend if you can get both events in!
  2. Had broken my side mirror on a tree driving to a cache. Among other things, it exposed a wire for the electronic movement of the mirror. Found a roll of electrical tape and a roll of duct tape in the cache. The electrical tape was an obvious grab, the duct tape was used to secure the mirror......for use!
  3. Gary's Hip This is one from a local cacher. We all Got a good laugh out of this one! I've tried the link several times and can't get it to work, so here is the story - A local cacher had a hip replacement, and as a joke another cacher made a metal "replica" hip bone and made it a TB. A third cacher had it with him at the airport (in a suitcase), apparently it looked like a gun under the xray, and it was confiscated! Edit: several times to try to fix the link.
  4. At a very tough cache in our area. People race to be the FTF. There should be a "B&G" below the arrow. For the name of the cache. By the way, the arrow is pointing in the wrong direction. Coincidence?
  5. Hope to add some perspective here. I have been a geocacher for more than three years. A friend told me about a newspaper article concerning a B-17 plane crash from 1944 in a state park. I immediatly began research because I am sort of an amatuer WWII historian and wanted to visit the site and I thought I would put a cache there. What I found was that not a lot of people were willing to give up the location. There are aviation archeology websites out there and the consensus(sp?) seems to be that if one wants to visit a crash site, one needs to do a lot of research, and should not be spoon fed coordinates. The thinking is, the more work put into it, the less likely you are to have bad motives. Do I agree with this? I don't know. It seems to me that most of the infamous crimes in the world require a lot of behind the scenes work, coordination, and planning. The head naturalist at the park has written a book about the park and mentions the crash (w/ pics) but does not give directions. When I talked with him, he was rather stand-offish and basically told me not to waste my time. After years of research, I talked with surviving crewmen and relatives, older locals, the museum, I even posted on the regional GC forums looking for cachers who might know something....I stumbled across a guy who had been there and he gave me coordinates. I visited the site this past May and stopped in the naturalists office, he was not happy that the coordinates were on the internet. However, when I told him of my plan to petition the state for a historical marker, he was a little bit more comfortable with (at least) my personal motives and he gave me copies of official park documents from the '40's, after I had shown him my extemsive packet of research and contacts. The crash being where it is (remote area, no trails) he still did not want to draw people to the site itself with a marker (hard to patrol) but he did think a marker reading "Ten miles south of here....blah, blah" was a good idea. Anyway, since the Michigan State Parks require a hefty permit fee for cache placement (along w/ other restrictions) I did not place a cache. The guy in charge did not want to draw more people there. When Waymarking came about, one of the first categories was crash sites....I voiced my opinions about not directing attention to them for moral, legal and other issues. Most times it is illegal to remove wreckage, and don't get caught with any weaponry from the wreck! I have seen the cache pages for the wrecksite caches, do you see the gallery pics of people in, on, or picking up pieces of the wreck? This is technically disturbing the site. In the wreck I researched, all crewman parachuted to safety (thankfully) in fatal crashes, it is usually impossible to locate the deceased. People find dog tags and bone fragments at these sites all the time. Put a cache there, and people will turn over every piece of wreckage looking for it. Even if you stae:" Cache is not located in the wreckage....people will still look for it there. Sorry for the long windedness, but I would opt for not placing the cache. Just my feelings as a cacher and a newbie wreck researcher.
  6. Just tuned into the forums after a brief hiatus and found this thread. The idea seems pretty cool but I have doubts about it getting done by ANYBODY. We are currently trying to just cache in all 50 states and it ain't easy. I read the idea of just finding any cache in a given state, I think that would be better than a specific cache in each state. Also a suggestion, if specific new caches are used, have them placed in border areas of the state. That way, as many as 4-5 could be gotten (is that a word?) in one trip. We plan our vacations in border areas so we can do just that now....caches in each state. We definately are not hitting some of the most picturesque or defining parts of some of these states, our routes are planned for proximity to our destination, 1 hour drives in all directions for the different states, proximity to major roads and yes, hate to admit it.......1/1's and/or park-and-grabs. Sorry for the lateness in my suggestions, good luck. All that being said, we would try our darndest to complete it!
  7. In order 1) Charlize Theron, 2) Diane Lane, 3) Martina McBride - fantasy Reality - Mrs. Geek is the only one for me! Edit; to add pic
  8. Osgood and Thor.......the cachehounds, they don't really find caches, (if they did, Thor would surely "mark" it, which would be bad. He is obsessed with marking, Ozzie will mark but not like Thor....sometimes I think nothing comes out....really funny! ) but they love to go with us.
  9. Our newest "thing" is to cache in all 50 states. For Thanksgiving, we went to vist relatives in NC. During that trip we hit caches in NC, SC, GA, VA, TN, and KY, but that wasn't really "just" for caching. This winter we drove from our home in Michigan to WV for a couple of caches, stayed over night, drove to Erie, PA so we could hit caches in PA, and NY, stayed over night, and drove home the next morning......all for caching!
  10. In Michigan's UP.......that water was very cold!!! Besides, Mrs. Geek understands about shrinkage..........alright, alright we'll stop there
  11. Here is a hot...eeerrrr, aaahhhh......well, it's a shot?! Too bad this prize belongs to Mrs. Geek......you'll have to fight her for it! That's just how I cache! Dutch Fred Lake Edit: I really am sorry for the HUGENESS of the pic. Couldn't figure out how to make it smaller
  12. There is one in the cabela's lot. "Tamarack(sp?)cache" is the name I believe. That is really the closest. The next closest ones are probably 5-10 miles.
  13. We have not been getting any notifications either. Our watchlist stuff (caches, TB's, etc.) doesn't notify like it used to either. HELP!
  14. This is not really that rare of a find. I find myself in basement/tunnel areas of many buildings in the metro Detroit area. We find the same stashes all the time. They really do have morphine and other drugs in them too! Yes, the H20 barrels are supposed to be used as a commode and the have special "attachments" to help the conversion. Yes.....I have tasted the crackers! Not very good, but they were meant to last for 50 years, so, what the heck! Plus, I was triple dog dared!
  15. DNF's are not the devil. Sometimes a DNF log is the funnest, and adds to the cache when it is finally found. Plus others can laugh at your travails when they walk right up to it! We approach every cache as if we aren't done until it is found, and we continue to log DNF's until we DF! I think it adds to the flavor of the particular cache. Just last week, we logged a find on a cache the we DNFed a couple of times......last year! Hey, we weren't thru lookin!
  16. We had this one make it! From this cache I think it is just random. I guy in these parts takes a pic at every cache and he has made the banner at least 5 times. Funny how this one didn't make it........ maybe it's not random! Edit: to add pics and links and such
  17. Stuck vehicles My favorite, the pics are great! We're in it twice, and I BUMPED it for good measure!
  18. BUMP!!!!!! I love this thread, and it is winter.......come on people where are your "stuck/accident" pics! By the way, I saw a new thread about "your favorite thread." Since this is my favorite thread, I just had to bump it! So you have them to blame! Also, we are in here twice!
  19. Lost Town of Fiborn This is just one of the classic examples. We have property in the area and have been going up there for at least ten years. Never knew this place existed! When we go on vacation to new places, we don't waste our time on tourism guides.....we look for caches!
  20. Only our secong cache ever! No camera and it wouldn't have mattered anyway, bear took off faster than I did......I actually froze. Mrs. Geek caught up to me and wondered what the heck I was doing!
  21. There is one by us that is actual stuffed blackbird on a tree limb. The cache is a lipstick tube in the birds **s.
  22. How about power line ROW's (for lack of a better term) that go through state parks, forests etc. You could place a cache there, provided you stay away from "equipment" and the DNR allows the placement of caches......which Michigan sometimes doesn't
