  1. Thanks for the suggestion. In the map60C there is only the internal memory, which is not visible or accessible. If it's loose, I'd have to rip the whole thing open to check, and I don't feel like risking that!
  2. Thanks; I have tried detail set to Most/More and that doesn't add any roads beyond the main highways.
  3. I have a Garmin GPSmap60C that I have used without any trouble for a few years, often loading/changing the maps I use depending on where I go. A few weeks ago I went to LA, and when I got there found that none of my maps would display at all (except for the basemap). The maps appear to be loaded, and I can enable/disable them on the device, but nothing I do makes any map detail appear. The GPSr is otherwise working fine: my waypoints appear, and I can set routes & see how far I am from my waypoints. Last week I went to Las Vegas, after loading new maps, and again had the same problem. Tomorrow I'm off to Mexico (yes, pity me for all the fun travelling I'm doing this month), and after loading the Mexico Atlas for the trip, again find that no map detail is visible except for the basemap. Has anyone seen this problem before? I just downloaded the latest versions of both MapSource and the unit software, and then downloaded my map again, but that didn't help. Thanks for any suggestions.
  4. Very cool; I had no idea my GPSr could do this. Is this information also available for Canada, or only for the USA? thx

    Toronto Caches

One of my favourites is this multicache in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery: A Monumental Quest It's a really nice stroll, and you will learn a lot about some prominent Canadians who, um, reside there.
  6. I have MG4 Canada and I love it. I'm getting the Topo one because when I'm going hiking some places, I'll really enjoy seeing the details of the elevation as I go. Who knows, perhaps it will even come in handy when geocaching, to figure out the best route to a cache! The other nice thing about the Topo maps is that land relief features change less rapidly than the Points of Interest database (e.g. restaurants) does!
  7. The contour lines are the main thing of value, along with rivers. What else would you be looking for in a topo product? I think there is a lot of value in this as it is.
  8. Holy moley. I just ordered this, and can't wait to have it for my trip out east this summer.
  9. I have been very happy with this one; the detail right across the country is excellent. The only down side is that it uses a ton of memory for the larger cities. Perhaps not a problem for you (you seem to be in Saskatchewan, which requires < 20MB for the entire province; even with a Legend you could cover a lot of ground around Saskatoon).
  10. I have a GPS60C; I wasn't assuming I could fit the whole country in the GPSr at one time! I certainly do hope the maps are downloadable; the choice of words in the announcement just made me cautious about it. We shall see soon enough!
  11. GPS City has a slightly lower price ($153.95) and a more specific availability date (May 21st). But I am wondering if this will allow us to download the topo maps to our GPSrs, or only use them in Mapsource on the PC to plan routes, and download those. Phrases such as: "The user has the ability to pre plan their daily adventures from the comfort of their own home, using MapSource on the PC." and "Let MapSource TOPO Canada help plan your next outdoor adventure!" (emphasis added) make me think this, as does the repeated mention of the maps being vector-based. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, and thinking that having the whole country on my GPSr in topo form (at 1:50,000 scale) is too good to be true. We should know more soon, if the product is really coming out in a month and a half.
  12. I also loved my Legend, which I recently sold after upgrading to a 60C. The mapping capability is terrific, as long as the 8MB is enough to store the maps you'll need to keep loaded in it. If you think you'll use the mapping capability over alarge area without quick access to a PC/laptop, or if you live somewhere like LA, where the maps take up a huge amount of memory, you should be fine. I think this is a great time to look for a used Legend, as a lot of folks like me are selling used ones to upgrade to the new 60C/CS.
  13. I am very happy with mine. The display is nice, and I love the ability to download maps in a minute via USB instead of waiting forever for the serial transfer. I have only tried the autorouting twice (and it wasn't one of the reasons I upgraded from my Legend), and both times it produced a very stupid route. It seemed to have much too strong a preference for "highways", diverting me a few km out of my way, and forcing me down Yonge Street (the "main drag" in Toronto, officially Highway 11, but usually a street to avoid if you're trying to go a fair distance across town). I just tried doing one of them in Mapsource on my PC, and got a less stupid route, so it does seem there is something a little wonky about the autorouting. But my experience may be a local little glitch.
  14. Sold, for $CDN 160, to a nice couple who drove in today from St. Catherines!
  15. See my posting: here regarding Mapsource Metroguide version 3.02, whose memory consumption profile is more suitable to a Legend. The Garmin viewer can be used to see how much detail exists in the areas you cares about. Note that the Enhanced basemap provides the most detail in some areas! I am not in New Brunswick (I'm in Toronto), but I'll be passing through on my way to Cape Breton in July...
  16. I like the one with the trillium. As we say in the software business: "Ship it!"
  17. Lots of views of this topic, but no replies. Perhaps $CDN 200 (roughly $US 150 today) is more than I can expect (though I did say "or best offer"...)? I am not fixated on selling this locally, though that would still be the most convenient. I have one offer from before I posted; any one else want to speak up?
  18. I have the newer (and more bloated) version 4, and just got my new 60C with the memory to handle it, so my older (now discontinued) V3.02 of Mapsource Metroguide Canada with Roads and Recreation is up for sale. You can find details of what this is at Garmin's website: The older version might be preferable for those with less memory in their units, for example an eTrex Legend. Hey, I have one of those for sale too; see my other posting today in this forum! I could bundle the two items together if you're interested. I would prefer to sell this to someone near me (I'm in Toronto) to avoid the complications of currency conversion and cross-border shipping. Hey, maybe we could meet at a cache and avoid the shipping! I paid $CDN 130 for this in August. Given that it's discontinued/replaced by the newer version, I'll take a fair bit less than that. I'm looking for $CDN80 or best offer. Send me an email if you are interested.
  19. My 60C arrived today, so my trusty Legend is now officially for sale. Lightly used to find 64 caches since August! Includes the wriststrap I never used, and the serial cable for downloading. I would prefer to sell this to someone near me (I'm in Toronto) to avoid the complications of currency conversion and cross-border shipping. Hey, maybe we could meet at a cache and avoid the shipping! I paid $CDN 270 in August for this, and am hoping to recover $CDN 200 of that, or best offer. Send me an email if you are interested. See another post in this forum for details of Mapsource Metroguide Canada version 3.02, which I am also selling, and will bundle with this unit.
  20. I've been very happy with my MG4 on my Legend, and will be trying out the autorouting features as soon as my 60C arrives (Thursday?!?). The detail seems complete, as far as I can tell. I can't think of a reason to get any other street software for Canada. Now if they finally come out with high-detail topo maps...
  21. It seemed to me in Mapsource that the "extra" ones are mostly hospitals, so maybe they show as airports because they have helipads on their roofs?
  22. Hi MMAD, I'm planning to upgrade my Legend to a GPS60C within the next 2 months, and sell my Legend. I have both version 3 and 4 of Mapsource Canada. If I don't wind up selling my V3 as a package with my Legend, I'll drop you a line (if you can wait a bit). I'll be asking much less than that price on eBay (which is about the same as what you would pay for V4...) From a look at the caches you have found so far, I'm guessing you're close enough to where I live (Toronto) that we could meet at a cache one day to complete the transaction (I have done 2 of the caches you've done)! cheers j144
  23. Here are the details for the Golden Horseshoe area: Dunnville, Ontario 419 KB St. Catharines, Ontario 734 KB Grimsby, Ontario 163 KB Hamilton, Ontario 0.99 MB Delhi, Ontario 788 KB Guelph, Ontario 1.75 MB Milton, Ontario 945 KB These 7 maps sections total 7.28 MB, and will fit in a Legend. This is with the routing info turned off. These 7 map sections cover all of the Golden Horseshoe from the US border, including: - all of Hamilton and Burlington, - all of Kitchener/Waterloo, but NOT any of the following: - Oakville - Brittania - Halton Hills - Mono Centre - Orchardville - Palmerston - Port Burwell (I chose those 7 towns to outline the border outside the selected map sections, as the shape is irregular). I don't think there is any direct correlation of area to memory needed; it depends on the amount of detail (streets, features, points of interest), so densely populated areas use lots more.
  24. I can answer that! Here are the sizes for the 2 map regions around Ottawa in Metroguide 4.0: Kemptville, Ontario MetroGuide Canada v4.0 1.31 MB L'Ange-Gardien, Quebec MetroGuide Canada v4.0 2.06 MB these two surround all of the city of Ottawa and Hull; the boundary between the two is awkward; it's rectangular, rather than following the river, so you'll need both. Still, it easily fits into your Legend, and covers the area west-to-east: Almonte to Cote St-Pierre, and south-to-north: Jasper to Bowman.
  25. I recently took advantage of a generous offer from Garmin to buy Metroguide V4 at a very reduced rate, because I had just bought version 3.01 a few weeks earlier. I have not explored it in its entirety yet,but I have noticed the following: - V 3.01 only had detail for Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver. V4 has excruciating detail for every city I have looked at (Calgary, Halifax, Dawson City, to name a few). It has every road I have been on in the vicinity of Horseshoe Valley/Orillia, where I take my kids on vacation often. I am impressed with how much detail is available across the country, and for this reaosn alone I am very happy I got the new one. - The tradeoff for this is that the maps in V4 take up a lot more memory. In V3.01 I could have all of Toronto and surrounding cities (anywhere I would likely go caching without much advanced peraration) in my Legend with its 8MB. With V4 I don't think I can even fit all of the megacity of Toronto, so I will need to plan ahead a bit more. If you're planning on one of the new 51MB units, you'll probably be fine - One nice surprise is that the 2 versions coexist just fine within MapSource on my PC. It appears that I have my choice to use either, or perhaps even mix & match map sections from both (I have not actually tried this yet!). I had expected V4 to just replace V3.02 once I installed it, but they appear to have distinct product codes. That makes it very easy to do side by side comparisons of the detail, and if it does allow mix/match on the GPSr, more flexibility in what I choose to download. - Because the new maps are from a different source, they are not in every case better. My impression is that overall they are much better, but I have already noticed one case where the new ones are missing info available in the old ones. So there may be significant areas where this would matter to you. Check out Garmin's preview viewer to make sure for areas you care about (but be patient, because the online viewer is designed to be slow and annoying, so you won't really rely on it for anything more than a quick look-see). I'm jealous about your plan to get one of the new GPSmap60CS units. I just got my Legend in August, and it'll be a long while before I can justify an upgrade!
