You shouldn't take things too seriously, this is just a hobby for both cache makers and finders.

It's a requirement for Earthcaches to be translated to the local language. So locals should be able to read them right? Not everyone speaks several languages. Hence the requirement.

I contacted the owner of the Earthcache in question and offered to provide a better translation which they accepted. It was easy for me to send a message. I'm not sure why reaching out to a local to proofread is so difficult. Any other vacation cache requires reaching out to a local.

It just seems like the right thing to do so the people you're trying to educate with an Earthcache can understand what you're educating them about.

  2. I know it is a requirement for Earthcaches to be translated into a local language. I fully support that, I speak two languages and take care to be accurate with my Earthcaches in both languages.

I came across an Earthcache while browsing where the description and even the questions were so badly translated that it changed what was being said and taught. It was obvious that Google had done the entire translation.

I propose that especially vacation Earthcaches, require a real person who speaks the local language to at minimum proofread an Earthcache description to ensure its accuracy.

    What does everyone else think?

Some COs have set 10s and even 100s of EarthCaches, which tells you straight away that they have no real interest in the answers people send in.

I am one of the Earthcache owners with lots of Earthcaches, 77 currently. I reply to everyone. I track everyone who logs one with a spreadsheet. Most of my Earthcaches are not in areas frequented by lots of cachers, so it's not difficult for me.

I mostly agree with archiving Earthcaches with inactive owners.

I also think that vacation Earthcaches should be more heavily monitored, especially in places where a translation to another language is required. I've seen several badly translated Earthcaches where even the questions differ from the original English.

  4. I'm working on publishing my last two Earthcaches in before Earthcache day. Hopefully I get more visitors than I normally do. Most years I might get one log on one of my Earthcaches on Earthcache Day.

As for what I will log myself, I'm moving to a new country a few days before Earthcache day, so I have hundreds of new Earthcaches to choose from. I'm excited. I usually have to drive 200km to log an Earthcache that day.

Would it be okay to remind seekers of a geocache not to collect samples or otherwise damage the site, with the caveat that CITO is always acceptable if they find trash left by others?

I have two Earthcaches where I remind geocachers not to collect rocks from the area as it is illegal in those two places. It passed by my geoaware without issue. I didn't mention CITO, just local laws so tourists would be aware.

  7. Hello, I am the geocaching community volunteer translator for the Korean language. I live in South Korea.

There appears to be a French geocacher who has created an AL in Pyongyang against Geocaching, Adventure Lab, and regional guidelines. There are also a multitude of obvious spoofers who have logged it. I have reported the AL. I would like to ask others to report this AL as well to make sure that it is deleted by HQ. Thanks

  8. I recently tested an adventure lab for a friend. I had previously given them advice that they should stick to the two hours, but that spots could be further away.

Then I tested the lab. It took almost exactly two hours and had me riding public transportation most of the time. While I enjoyed the places he highlited in his lab, it was quite tedious traveling so much. I changed my recommendations to him to make it quicker and more walkable, or out of town cachers probably wouldn't bother with several of the stops. Furthermore, If they don't complete the adventure at this time, a cacher can't leave feedback.

I also own an AL that can be finished in about 30 minutes by walking. It's a place I enjoy walking around a lot. Friends have also enjoyed it.

They're at it again: balozu burvis logged one of our coins, which again (s)he can't have seen. Code was posted two days ago on the infamous FB group, which still exists. Deleted log and locked tb.

This same account just logged one of my coins that they had never seen with a log that just says "Check"

I really don't won't to get into emergency services way or cause additional burden to them.

But, how does hiking get in their way?

Essentially the hospitals are already overloaded in much of the world, and any injury, (hiking related injuries, getting lost or stuck, broken or injured bones, car accidents) is going to go untreated for an extended and possibly life threatening amount of time. Hospitals are also afraid that anyone showing up with a non-corona related medical issue may walk away from an emergency room with Corona. Really, it's just better to follow regional guidelines and medical experts advice.

I'm in Korea and we've been dealing with the Corona Virus fora while. I'm glad that the Korean government took things seriously here early on and have "flattened the curve." We're almost through this here.

Going back to the original topic. I think that disabling caches should be up to the owner and their regional advice, some areas may need it, some may not.

Definitely, Insadong is very central for exploring; it's "temple & palace central".  Narrow streets, lots of walkers, and I'm not sure, but it seems walkers have right of way over the few vehicles.  I've stayed at Bibimbap Guesthouse (ondol style, futon + heated floors), also Top Hotel & Residence (standard but compact hotel room), both recommendable and right in the heart of it.  But there are tons of choices.

Bukhansan, yes, a wonderful hike with many caches, and cat, yes cats, on the summit.  Transportation might be tricky; it was lucky for me:

I'm excited for you.  Already I'm aching to go back a third time.

Agreed, Insadong has a great cache too with all the touristy stuff anyone would want. Most of the area is off limits to cars, not sure why anyone would want to drive through there anyway.

I know you hiked Gwanaksan too, did you see the cats there? Actually, cats are on most mountains in Korea. I always found that interesting too.

Next time you come back let one of the locals know and we can try showing you some more remote mountains or regions in the country.

Seoul booked for autumn. Glad I remembered there was a good deal a few days ago. Caching there looks great: just simple traditionals without masses of multies and mysteries. Nice.

Seoul has great caching. Hopefully things with the virus clear up and borders start opening up again. Before you come, if you want to send me a message I can give you recommendations on some of the best caches in the area.

Namsan in the center of the city and following the path of the three virtuals is what most tourists do. I've set up the first Adventure Lab in the city in a nice historic district too. There's so much in Seoul to enjoy. Seven years in and I'm still finding new and amazing places.
