Last I saw in a news group, this fellow by the handle of 'matrix' was working on it. Had replaced a chip with a 128meg chip which worked but will need to work on the software as it appeared to be internally fixed at the 19meg point(not checking available memory in the V). He was supposed to return from a 3 week vacation a day or two ago. Haven't seen anything since he left on vacation. Bill

  3. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky:That really isnt the point....I would like to have the whole route in the thing just in case....I dont need the CS maps for the local stuff for me but as I explained, it seems that when I try to load the route I have created in the CS software, the V wants to recalculate regardless of the fact that I am using major roads in that "standard" map set.... "It's about 1 mile from here as the crow flies.....2 miles by car.....3 miles if you are using a GPS...." I'm afraid that is the way it works. You need to do your routing using the V, not the CS software in your computer - unless you have room to load all the maps used in the auto-routing. I believe that is what various ones have been saying - do your routing in the V by selecting New, Manual. Then enter the waypoints. It will use CS where available in the V, and use Basemap otherwise. But if you use waypoints within the Basemap portion, those points have got to be available within the Basemap. Maybe the best way would be to make waypoints along the Basemap portion of trip using only the V. Then you know they are available. Bill
  4. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky:I am hoping that by placing the waypoints on the large highways on the sections where I could not load a map I can make it work...it is uploading now... "It's about 1 mile from here as the crow flies.....2 miles by car.....3 miles if you are using a GPS...." It should work. I plan trips from N.Texas to Memphis. I could load all maps needed but only use my departure map and the Memphis map and route the trip Manually on the V. I don't need waypoints on the Interstate but they don't interfere with anything. I use the CitySelect maps to get me to the Interstate(70 miles from home) and get me to house address on other end...but I cannot plan and download an Autoroute from CitySelect computer program to GPS V and have it go as I desire unless all maps along the route are included. Matter of fact a good test is to download all maps required (assuming you have the memory for this). Then route the trip on the V. Check the mileage and route. Then start unchecking (in the V) various maps inbetween the start point and end point and comparing it to your original by having it figure the navigation again each time. I actually only need 3 maps for the 500 mile trip which I found by doing the above. BTW, you can put waypoints in the CitySelect computer software and just download the waypoints to the V without having to download all the maps again. Takes maybe 10 seconds for the transfer. 5. It may be that hard! It appears you cannot plan AND download an autoroute unless all maps used during the routing are included...at least that has also been my experience. Even if you download the starting and ending maps, autoroute won't go the way you planned from the MapSource computer program. But, if you do as you indicate and download waypoints, then do a Manual Route on the V using those waypoints, it will go the way you intend. So, if anyone has a better solution, please let us know. 19Meg memory for maps IS a headache! Bill

  7. Made two separate purchases within the past month. One for the V, and the other for an additional dash mount. Service was extremely fast and accurate. Only worked thru the web, did not phone. Bill

  9. quote:Originally posted by robertlipe:Let me turn the question back to you, though - If you have a V, does the laptop/routing thing really buy you much? No, not really. The V is just about perfect size, easy to read and really functional. Guess I just feel I must help keep the economy moving P.S. After 10 minutes thinking about it, you are correct. I am not getting one. The economy will have to do the best it can! Bill
  10. Been playing with my GPS V past two days to determine what having a laptop might offer in keeping up with one's position while driving. Being new to this GPS stuff, I wondered how close to the highway the GPSr would keep you using a laptop and software. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you can simulate driving a route by putting the V in the Indoor mode, choosing a route, telling it to Navigate that route, and to Simulate driving it as you might do normally and it would track your progress on the computer. I had a really old "Street Atlas 7" version and connected the V to it. I made an identical route in the computer software (SA & MapSource). It tracked right along the route and gave voice commands as to distance to turn and speed as if really driving the route. I then did the same with MapSource City Select and it did the same, but with no voice. So, I determined that should I get a laptop, the hookup will work as desired. Not sure whether the latest Street Atlas or the MS Streets and Trips would be better for driving. I could not find out on the Microsoft website if the S&T gave voice commands as there was nothing mentioned in Requirements that Sound was necessary for Voice, but the Delorme website did mention it. Could someone fill me in on this. In doing the simulation, the only thing needed to make sure you stayed on the roads was to have your starting position accurate. Maybe telling the V your location initially would do, but I had it in Outdoor mode until I got a 3D lockon, then switched to the Indoor mode. Bill
  11. quote:Originally posted by Wilderboys:Just received my V. Won it on E-bay. NIB and has all the bells and whistles of the deluxe except I was not able to unlock but 1 region. Thanks If you bid on the GPS V Deluxe, my understanding is that it should have had the Unlock codes for entire CitySelect CD. Mine did (from a dealer), but part of it being called Deluxe is the unlock code. eBay is good, but a lot of times what is NOT described is as important as what IS described. That's when an email question to the seller is warranted. If seller doesn't respond (because he didn't like your question), find another deal. Matter of fact there are about a dozen Street Pilot III Deluxe up for bid right now. He tells you a lot, but doesn't say if they are New, have a warranty, refurbished or what. He says the CitySelect CD in included but doesn't say if the Unlock code is included. I emailed question on what was NOT said. I got a one-word response, "new". So much for that! Bill
  12. Realize I'm not a guru. But, not using that internal modem I would take it out. I would do this by going to MyComputer, Control Panel, Modems, highlight the internal modem (if it shows up) and click Remove. Then I would shut down the computer and physically remove the modem card. Upon reboot the modem will not be there. But in the Device Manager (Right-click MyComputer, Properties, Device Manager. You should be able to scroll down to where it says "Ports (Comm & LPT). Click on the "+" sign to expand it. You should have your available Comm & LPT ports listed there if they are set up in your BIOS. IF there is NO conflict in your hardware/software setup there should be no "X" or "?" there beside the Port we are talking about. You can click (highlight) that Port, then click on Properties. A screen should popup and under the General Tab it should say, "This device is working properly". And at the bottom should be a check mark beside "Exists in all hardware profiles." If we can nail down this much, it will be a good starting point. I use WinME but the above should work about the same. Bill
  13. I think it would help those attempting to help you if you would tell us what presents itself when you right-click on MyComputer, Properties. What is shown for Comm ports? An "X", a "?", nothing, or does it show Comm ports OK? Bill
  14. The latest version of MeMap uses it's own configuration file (extension .cfg) which has the default lines and spaces. Rename that cfg file to bak or whatever. Now when you run MeMap instead of the default Search, type in "Do not attempt" (without quotes-case matters). It will find the Garmin warning and you will have over 200 characters (as I recall) which you can type in. Which is enough for most any message. However, since you already have entered your own message, search for a few words of it. Now replace with whatever you like. Or, could start from scratch with the original Garmin .rng file Bill
  15. I'd say that like most things, you'll start off small (inexpensive) but get hooked, then move up to more expensive model. Can save that step by buying what you really want to use one for right at the beginning. Bill
  16. The Garmin car mount which has both permanent and temporary pads. I use the temp pads and it holds the unit securely. I have moved the mount several times within the vehicle and into other vechicle. No residue remaining...however, I don't press down on the mount hard - no need to. Bill
  17. I wonder if a cloth with static electricity wouldn't pull the spec over to the side and out of the way? Bill
  18. quote:Originally posted by Brian - Team A.I.:I recall the V giving you notice of an upcoming turn at .1 miles, not 1.5. At least that's when it beeps. Brian Team A.I. It may have something to do with speed (time to turn) as I have had it beep 1.5 miles from turn at 70 mph, then another set of beeps within a few hundred feet of turn. Also at about 30 mph it has beeped about .25 miles (maybe less) from turn. I'll check it out next drive. Bill
  19. I came across a tip for making waypoints on the V from Waypoints using the V map page. I had fooled with trying to make waypoints using the map page for hours and had concluded that it couldn't be done (except present position, of course, or projected). "If you move the rocker to a new position to mark a waypoint, press Enter and the Screen will give your location. Press the menu instead of Ok and it will save the waypoint as the name on the arrow you can then change the name if you so wish." Bill
  20. quote:Originally posted by chiro: BTW, my wife no longer thinks of it as a toy or a fun gadget. She plainly stated after getting back to the hotel the first night, "We would have been screwed without this thing." We are both looking forward to our first geocaching trip, hopefully this weekend. Thanks for all your help. Good experience for you! I can relate to the 'wife' portion as well. When my V arrived (without mentioning to wife of the order) she was a little perturbed. I soothed her somewhat by saying if I didn't like it, I could sell it on eBay. Well, after the first trip her words were, "I'm glad I lived long enough to see something like this available." As we are both nearing age 70, I also reminded her that 'old folks' need this to find their way to grocery store and back! Bill
  21. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky:Is there a way to display the "driections" when doing a route like this on the V (to be shown on the V itself, not on the PC)...? There is a place in MapSource City Select where you uncheck the AutoRouting and select Direct routing. This will download each waypoint to the V and download as a manual route. Then in the V, when you select the route, it will be listed as a Manual route. Click Navigate, it will ask if you want to Follow Roads. Click Yes for the auto-routing. Now, if it is taking weird roads can check which waypoint is causing the error and edit as necessary. Also, once you have loaded a map section, you can reroute, new route, make waypoints, etc. without having to download the map section again. This only takes about 8 or 10 seconds. And it doesn't erase your previous routes/waypoints in the V. Bill
  22. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky:Have any of you found the accuracy of autorouting to be way off soemtimes??? I just got my V a few days ago, and I am hoping it is user error... Not knowing your route of course, it is hard to say other than I wonder about your waypoints. How about using City Select so you can see them much clearly and marking waypoints that way. Download and check it out. Maybe, also, check Direct Route in City Select and it will download as a manual route and you will be able to see the waypoints when Route clicked on. I have found in my plotting that waypoints are written in stone! If I click a waypoint thinking it is the Hiway I'm traveling, but it turns out to be a Ramp, then the auto-routing will do a clover leaf in order to get me back on my route...my bad! Other than that, my V follows the waypoints I tell it to - if the waypoint is indeed a road, etc. and not in the boondocks somewhere where auto-routing can't get to. Bill

I learned two things...one being the Page key for O.K., the other when using the City Select software to plan a route one can tell it to use Direct routing and it will download as a Manual route. 24. I was pleasantly surprised when loading a new set of maps from CitySelect that my previous waypoints and routes in the GPSr were not erased...the admonishment about everything but the Basemap would be erased, etc. Bill
