Help! Spherical Trigonometry To Find A Cache...
DubbleD70 replied to DubbleD70's topic in General geocaching topics
Well, we went and found it last Saturday, on the way to a local Geocaching Event!!! Easy find, once you solve it, just not an easy hike to the cache... High elevation and loose footing. We met the cache owners at the event and they spread it around that we had found it... Boy THAT felt good!!! Many kudos and pats on the back from fellow cachers at the event... I want to thank everybody again for their help!!! -
Thoughts On An Offset Cache Idea
DubbleD70 replied to DubbleD70's topic in General geocaching topics
I don't know if that would get approved. The other problem that comes to mind is DayLight Savings. That'd throw everything off for half the year. Not really... AZ doesn't do daylight savings... -
Thoughts On An Offset Cache Idea
DubbleD70 replied to DubbleD70's topic in General geocaching topics
Well crap!!! Would it be stupid to make the cache only available at a certain time of year? Like some kind of anniversary or birthday cache? -
In a given year, would the shadow of a flagpole differ too much at a given time to use it as an offset point? Hypothetically like this: coords take you to the base of a flagpole and the cache must be done at precisely 2:15pm... You then have to walk to the tip of the flagpole's shadow and find the cache within x number of feet from there... Or would it have more appeal (being that it can only be done on one day a year or only at a certain time of year)and cancel out the problem of shadow differences by time of year, like this: coords take you to the base of a flagpole and the cache must be done at precisely 2:15pm on December 31st... You then have to walk to the tip of the flagpole's shadow and find the cache within x number of feet from there...

Subscription Only Caches--grrrrrrrrrr!
DubbleD70 replied to Pinster56's topic in General geocaching topics
Not many MO caches within 100 miles of me, but I'm going to be forking over the dough on next payday. What people fail to realize about paying for the subscription is that it opens up aLOT of additional tools and features. Like being able to download the waypoints as .gpx files instead of .loc files... The loc files are barebones when it comes to details. I use GSAK to keep track of all of my caching and I have to manually input any detail right now. IT SUCKS!!! But this is just one reason for me to upgrade... -

I was wrong to begin with, when I said Nova Scotia... Someone else made the comment about the coords for the tower location being tricky... Bottom line is: The tower location is NOT in Nova Scotia. Not to mention that was the starting point for the whole equation. The final coords are in AZ, but that's all I'm gonna say. Canningclan, did you verify your final coordinates with the cache owner? -

So now I AM doing the HAPPY DANCE!!! I got an email from the cache owner this morning... The coords I emailed him for verification are within 12 feet of his actual placement!!! Thanks to everyone for their help... Especially Fizzy and Tiffany's Slaves!!! Without GeoCalc, I would have never gotten it. Oh yeah, thanks to VegasCacheHounds, who was basically bagging on me for asking for help in here... It spurred me on. I hate confrontation, but don't know why, as it always inspires me... Mtngoat50 and I were both working on it last night and I posted my findings, but have since edited the post so that those who took to the challenge of solving this puzzle could still do so... -

Did you? Read his description of the tower location again. Anyway, I used a different value. I haven't heard back. I may be wrong. Wouldn't the North pole and Prime Meridian each be 0? -

That's what the puzzle is about. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to solve it for you. I think that doing a Web search of celestial navigation will help you find the information you are looking for. GeoCalc will eliminate all the trigonometric calculations for you. Is this page what I'm looking for? http://www.themathpage.com/aTrig/arc-length.htm I don't want you to do the work for me, just hold my hand... -

Sorry. It's here. Figure out the arc length in radians, multiply by the radius of the Earth, and you have the distance to project. ...Annnnnnnnnnnd how do I find the arc length in radians? -
My new toy The company I work for just ordered 9 of these for key employees (Me included)... I wonder if there's some GPS software I can install on it... Hmmmm... Then I can use it to find my caches graphically, take pics while at the cache, then visit the GC website and log my finds and upload the pics. All from my cell...

It's called compromise and teamwork. I offered to do the literal legwork of going to get the cache and giving the mathematician due credit for his/her help. What's wrong with that? I have strengths and weaknesses... So do you. If people work together, utilizing each others' strengths to compensate for the weaknesses, I can't see what's wrong with that... -

DubbleD70 replied to DubbleD70's topic in General geocaching topics
Actually you have this The elevation angle converts handily to a distance (length). Subtract the elevation angle from 90, then multiply it by 60 nautical miles per degree and you have the distance in nautical miles. From there, divide by 6000 to get distance in feet and so on to get it in whatever units you want. Once Upon a time, Tiffany's Head Slave was a ship's navigator (with sextant) and had to learn all of this stuff. If you have more questions, i can try to look it up in some reference books that are at home. So, where does that put the coords to the cache I'm trying to find?!! -
