  1. I rarely trade. Never really have. I do need to refresh my "swag bag," however, as I sometimes like to just drop things in the cache for the sake of doing so. I do trade for signature items. I'll leave mine and take one if there are good ones. I also will leave my signature item at caches that they can be left in and ones I really enjoy. I know people who trade a lot and others who don't. If I see something of interest, I'll trade, but it's rare outside of the sig items.
  2. Since yesterday. It's not just mine, either. Every TB I go and check shows no mileage anywhere, just an overall. When I put some in I grabbed yesterday and dropped, it didn't show any mileage, either. So if I move it from point A to point B, it doesn't show that it's 123.4 miles away. Wondering if it's a system problem right now. I see that mine is still the same.
  3. I have a personal TB that I drop and pull from every cache I go to to keep personal mileage. All of a sudden, it's not keeping mileage or showing mileage in between caches. It hasn't added to the total and if I "recalculate" it doesn't seem to work well. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?
  4. Whew. I have found these to be tougher than I thought. Trying to do some research and hoping I can get back up to the park again soon to do some peeking around and such. Seems like geology on this park is tough to find (history and all). I know there's something with the large lake that comes to the park, a pond inside the park and countless other things... it's just finding. Argh. Hopefully I can find something soon. I am really into doing one or two in this park!
  5. *duplicate at different times. Interesting. Got an error message, came back and re-posted and the first showed up.*
  6. This is killing me and hopefully someone can help me. I created a route via Google Earth. I saved it. I uploaded it. I ran the PQ and am peeking at the route and it's all set up like a normal PQ -- it seems in random order. I'm trying to figure out how the heck I can put this into a google map and scroll along and see what the heck I have to do to be able to use a normal google map (like on the geocaching site) and scroll along to look at this route? Thanks for any help!
  7. So, I want to work on putting a few Earthcaches out there. I really enjoy doing them and want to be able to place a few as well (and of course, work my way up the masters program!) Anyway, I have a few places I'd like to do them. One is in a state park where there's probably the possibility of doing one or two. The park manager has already said he'd approve it, but now comes the work. I'm just trying to figure out how to go about starting, finding something good to do the Earthcache with etc. There's a lake, a pond, many nature trails and countless miles of woods etc. There's a ton of stuff, but as someone who is still just learning Earthcaches and the "lessons," I'm a little overwhelmed trying to figure out how to go about beginning. So, I guess I'm just hoping to find some good info on learning how to start the process, finding info and all that. I'm not afraid of research and work, I just want to make sure I'm going down the right path so I don't do a ton of work and find out I really went the wrong way!
  8. Sweet. I'll be looking forward to these. I know I'll be looking to buy one!
  9. Ha! I know that feeling. We went for a caching day Saturday and when we were done, one person said that it wasn't a real day because I wasn't bleeding! Outstanding!
  10. Guess I can be added to the list. Clicked it a bunch last night and got nothing. Went to bed and just tried it a few times now and still nothing. Disappointing. Hopefully it's fixed or Groundspeak can tell us what's going on soon.
  11. Seeing as we're kind of in the middle of everywhere else, we've created a new club called the "Stuck in the Middle Cachers," which basically covers Delaware County, Otsego County and some surrounding communities in New York. Feel free to come and join us: Stuck in the middle cachers!
  12. I don't think it's kosher, but as with other screwy things that people come up with, i don't lose any sleep over it. It's kinda like having caches held until the day of an event where the event attendeess are the only ones who know about the caches and can therefore be the only ones to claim an ftf. I still haven't figured out why doing it this way is fun for people... To me, that's totally different than someone giving coords to a buddy before the cache is published. People reward the group that attends the event with the new permanent caches. As for the "and can therefore be the only ones to claim an ftf." In the end, again, who cares? I've had a bunch of FTFs. Is it neat? Sure. I don't go rushing out to get them though. I did that once -- kind of. When one came out several months ago, I made sure to go find that one the day it came out. It was my first FTF and I wanted to have one. Since then, I've had a bunch more. Most have come the day or two -- or more -- after the cache has been placed. It's neat to have, but it's not life or death. If you want a chance at an FTF at an event -- go to the event and get the coords. If not, it's all part of how the game is played by some.
  13. In the end, though, who cares? You found the cache. That pretty good in its own right. I have a slew of FTFs -- and a bunch of them have come with the cache out for a week or more. It's kind of cool to get them, but if someone has already signed the log -- I don't care what the date is -- I'm not the FTF. Just my two cents.
  14. Thanks for the notes and advice! I'm trying to now figure the best places to take photos from. I know I want to take night images of the Brooklyn Bridge and possibly Coney Island (well the Cyclone and maybe a couple of others). Definitely want night shots of Times Square. Anyone have any ideas on tripod use in these places? People usually just ignore you if you do these things? I'll have to hit up a couple of my photo forums.
  15. Hi all. I'm debating a daytrip to Brooklyn this weekend. Alas, it's not really for a caching day, more of a photo day. I've wanted to shoot Brooklyn/Coney Island for a while, especially at night. I'm also planning on heading over to Times Square at night to do some night shooting. All this caching has cut into my photography! I know the two can go hand-in-hand, but when I go out planning to shoot photos, I don't like to worry about doing other things. And at times, carrying my equipment to take photos when caching becomes tough. That being said, if I am going to be in Brooklyn and the Times Square area and can grab a few quick caches to help with the county challenge and DeLorme, I wouldn't mind. So, I come to the Mid-Atlantic crew hoping people might be able to point me in the right direction to find a couple easy ones -- even virtual. In fact, I'd almost prefer them because the people I'll likely be going with aren't really cachers, so virtual ones wouldn't be too bad. I wouldn't mind a real one or two, either, only for the fact that I could drop a coin or two or a sig item somewhere in the travel. Just looking for suggestions from anyone who knows the area. I'm going to be around the Brooklyn Bridge area and Coney Island and that area. (Mmmmm.... Nathan's Hot Dogs...). I believe we're parking somewhere and taking the train in (as long as it goes all night so we don't get stuck in the city after we're done -- I want some night shots!). Thanks for any help!
  16. Anyone know how hard it would be to figure out how to get one of those macros with New York and the DeLorme challenge? I don't know much about macros, but it would be nice to see one of them for NY!
  17. This has become quite the interesting debate. I look at it this way -- and this is the personal way I do it. If I go to search for the cache and actually physically spend time looking and everything else at GZ, I post a DNF or found log. Easy enough. If I start to hike toward a cache and was still 500 feet or more from it or something and had to turn around because of something else? I wouldn't DNF it because I didn't search for it. That's no different than driving 5 miles toward a cache 6 miles away and getting a call and having to turn around and then DNFng it. However, I might post a note if it merits (ie: the other day I went for a cache we had DNFd before and it was filled with muggles, I posted a note saying we were going for it again and we couldn't go there because of the overflow of people). This, of course, is my personal preference. I would rather people DNF when they actually look for it, not just because they got close and something else came up or things like that. That's a note in my eyes. However, if someone does search and doesn't find, I wish they would ALWAYS post some sort of a DNF. It really does help people. I have friends who I have been trying to encourage to post DNFs. They feel bad about it, which I can't understand. It helps people and owners.
  18. I always log DNFs as long as I've searched for them. Some of my best logs are DNFs.
  19. You start your response by saying "Americans and their ego getting to much again." Then you go on a diatribe about Americans and caching and generalize a whole country. So, I'll use your rationalization and logic. YOU should not judge all Americans based on the post of one person and how we as a whole play the game. Everyone plays it differently. America is much bigger than one post or person and we are all NOT the same, just as I wouldn't generaliz about every South African person based on one post. What's good for one American isn't always the same for another, just the same as what is good for one Canadian, Irishman, Russian or South African isn't always the same as another. We all do things different. This whole post is judgmental and makes no sense based on the original posters work. I don't usually jump into things like this, but to group a whole country together because of one post and how you read into it is quite irrational.
  20. It's a shame there doesn't seem to be a Delorme challenge grid map for New York on GSAK. Argh! That would make my life easier as I am trying to find the next grid to get!
  21. I know there's the DeLorme Challenge in New York and I'm slowly starting to look into doing this one. Might take a year or more, but I want to eventually complete it. Just wondering if there is a county challenge in New York, too? For that matter, are there any other challenges people know in New York? I wouldn't mind looking into them as I start doing the DeLorme one. Thanks!
  22. As long as I end up back in Montreal as planned this summer, this one might be just what I need to do! Outstanding idea, thanks!
  23. Thanks for all the ideas. I appreciate them. And keep 'em coming. I just am ordering a few extra travel bugs today and am hoping to stop by a few stores in the next day or so to find some interesting things to attach them to. Then from there, hopefully I can get some bugs going around the world. I like the idea of having the person do something with their pick-up logs. I think I might just try several different things and see what works! Keep the ideas coming though.
