  1. I dont know if anyone else has discovered this bug but I have had a strange situation occur when I double click on a cache name. I get the error cannot find OziExplorer (probably because I dont use Ozi <G>) but once you clear the error GSAK locks up for about 30 seconds where you cannot do anything at all. Eventually it will return a second error of "Unable to communicate with OziExplorer, process aborted" The first few times this happened I thought GSAK had locked up entirely and went into Task manager to stop it. But I found that letting it sit eventually it will return the second error. Is there anyway of disabling the OziExplorer feature so I can eliminate this annoyance? Happy Caching! And many thanks, Logger
  2. I would love to know the steps you are using to automatically get your Personal queries into GSAK. I dont use Mapopolis so I wouldn't have to make that final one finger salute. I have both Outlook and Outlook Express. I prefer express if its possible to do it. Thanks Logger
  3. We are a two GPSr family, one is an Etrex Vista and the other is an Etrex Yellow. Having two GPSr's makes finding the cache a snap even on difficult ones. You start at different points and work your way to the cachewhere the paths cross thats where you start searching from. If one GPS dies you still have a second one to find your way out or finish finding the cache. When I head out I carry a load of equipment consisting of: 1 or 2 GPSr's 1 compass 1 pocket PC loaded with maps of the area I am caching in as well as 1000 caches in my area. 2 FRS radios (tuned to channel 2, the unofficial caching channel) 1 headband hiking lamp Small penlight flashlight 2 sets of spare rechargeable batteries (charged) 1 or 2 litres of water (on a long hike I take an extra 3 litre hydration pack) short length of rope bandages and insurance paper (you never know when nature will call) spare pen extra ziplock bag and log book collapsible hiking stick portable dog dish for my four legged companions Oh yeah and cache trade items! All of this fits into or on a hip pack so it really doesnt take up a lot of space. The moral of the story is you never know what can happen and if you are not prepared for as many situations as possible you can find yourself in a whole lot of trouble. Having a second GPS is not a necessity if you have a good sense of direction and a good compass, but having one as insurance sure beats getting lost in the middle of nowhere and hoping that someone will find you. 4. I'M A GEEK AND I'M PROUD!!!!! There I feel better already!!!!
  5. As I mentioned to you Annie I think a geek section would be great as well, review some of the software available for geocachers. Maybe explore the pros and cons of paperless caching or just a primer on how to do it. I would be willing to write up this section and if anyone has any suggestions on the geekier side of caching that they would like to persue, let me know. If I don't know it, I would love to research it... Yes I am a geek, there I've said it, maybe now I can start on the road to recovery. Happy Caching! Logger
  6. Right off the top I have to recommend GSAK for paperless or papered caching. It rocks! I was a Palm M125 user for quite a while. It was great to be able to carry 800+ cache sheets in the palm of your hand. Recently, I made a leap of faith to a Toshiba E750 PPC. I can tell you I hove not been disappointed! No more waiting for plucker. GSAK spits out either the html files or gpx files, sync it and out the door. Pocket Streets to help find the cache and WiFi logs it in the field. I use it to talk in our local on-line chat nights, even browse and respond to this forum while soaking in the tub. (Caching is hard work) Myself I would recommend the PPC after having used both. I will be adding an Otterbox to mine to make it waterproof and floating in the near future.
  7. Great pictures of a very memorable event. Thanks for posting them Kiwi! Logqer
  8. posted by Geosquid: Hey Squid I thought you lived in Thorold South so I think thats just as bad if not worse Happy Caching! Logger
  9. Hehehehe that would be down right cruel to hold an event cache. But knowing all good geocachers it wouldnt be hard to find a Tim Horton's with or without a GPS! Happy Caching Logger
  10. Funny, I didnt think anyone would admit to living in, or being in Wellandport. Only kidding! Happy caching! Logger
  11. I was looking at a Toshiba E750 to replace my M125 palm so I was just wondering how it stacks up for caching? Has anyone interfaced it directly to the Vista GPS? Can you transfer waypoints back and forth? Can I use it the same way I do now to carry all the caches around (Currently I use GSAK and plucker) The one advantage is I can finally run the copy of pocket streets I have had since I bought Streets & Trips. Any feedback positive or negative? Thanks for your help Happy Caching! Logger
  12. I thought of that but two things sort of scared me about doing it, Keith mentioned the first one , damaging the bladder. The second one is the water in the hose would freeze as well and in all likelyhood the hole to the hose would be frozen until the ice melted enough to let the water get through. I'll give it a try though, worst case scenario I would have to get a new bladder. Thanks for the tip Happy Caching! Logger
  13. Probably a combination of both. The cellphone link is relaying the data from the GPS in order for them to find you. Either that or the aliens are in on the deal, and they are really the ones tracking you
  14. It sure doesnt taste like tapioca :-) Besides it doesnt mix well with the rum mentioned earlier
  15. If I can make a suggestion, wash it out a few times before you use it. It took quite a few washes and rinses for me to get rid of the rubber taste. I filled it up with lukewarm water and soap, then shook it around drained some through the hose then rinsed it out with clear water. I had to do this 4 times to clean it out. I heard rinsing it with vinegar works but I was reluctant to try it. Oh one moe thing if you throw one or two of the small freezer packs in along side the bladder it seems to keep the water nice and cold for the better part of the day. Happy Caching! Logger
  16. Excellent news RM .... You might have a cottage industry started there Happy Caching! Logger
  17. If you think of all of the products that we purchase as a result of Geocaching the list is a long one. I'm sure that from that list there are many of the suppliers that would donate product to encourage us to buy more. Here's the list that I can think of off the top of my head. GPSr's and accesories (obvious) Hiking boots Hiking Clothing (socks, dry-wick shirts, hats, vests etc) Walking sticks backpacks, hippacks, slingpacks batteries (rechargeable and disposable) flashlights water bottles and hydration packs compasses (standard and electronic) Cache containers Insect repellent sunscreen cameras (film and digital) film for cameras or memory for digitals FRS radios Utility knives (never know when you will need one) First Aid kits Inverters (for those who like to bring along the laptop in the car) Binoculars software (streets and trips etc) If you break this list down into all of the possible manufacturers you can have a heyday arranging giveaway prizing. Just my .02 worth Happy Caching! Logger
  18. The problem with going with Topo only is that it doesnt provide POI (point of interest) database. Let me tell you its very handy to be able to locate the nearest gas station when your in the middle of nowhere or need the phone number and address of a local hospital. I use the POI's far more than the contours, besides if I am planning a cache outting I can go to Claimaps and get the contour maps for anywhere in Ontario prior to heading out. Also the trail support on Claimaps is far better than the Garmin Topo's. The Garmin Topo's are nothing more than MG4 with contour lines minus POI's. If you use your GPSr for driving MG4 is the way to go IMHO. Happy Caching! Logger
  19. Metro guide 4 is the way to go, unfortunately with 8 megs of ram if you do a lot of driving you will be changing maps often. I found that a combination of Metroguide 3 and 4 fits nicely into a Legend and gives you pretty good mapping power. Happy Caching Logger
  20. Coca Cola has announced a new contest called Unexpected Summer. Using a GPS can (combination cell phone and GPS ) Coke will try to locate you and deliver your prize to you. Sort of a moving cache Check it out at Unexpected Summer Neat concept, I hope it works out.... Logger
  21. Well Hard Oiler your not alone, I picked my first tick on Tuesday. They are here in Niagara as well. I was on the Welland / Niagara Falls border and only walked a distance of 10m. By the time I got home I found one.... I HATE TICKS!!! Last year I had so many of them while working outdoors, the doctor sent me out for Lymes testing. Bad enough I give blood to those little critters, but then I have to give it to the doctors as well. YECH! Logger
  22. Annie looks like Res is just about to take the lead but not quite there 999 to 975 I wonder if Nozzletime can pull off 25 caches in one day. (probably not, if he is trying to do BQ's blue box series) Good luck to both of you! Happy caching! Logger
  23. Welcome to geocaching ! Please make sure to stop by the lobby and purchase your supplies of necessities prior to embarking on this XXXXXXX (Select appropriate title HOBBY, LOVE, PASSION, OBSESSION, NIGHTMARE, INSANITY, ETC) In Order to be sucessful make sure to stock up with large supplies of Courage, Drive, Determination, Insect Repellent, waterproof socks, rain jacket, sunblocker, Rub A535, first aid kit (with extra bandages for thorn bushes), tomato juice (yes I have run into a skunk while caching), Good hiking shoes, Laundry detergent (for the apres cache) Did I mention insect repellent???? A good health insurance plan may also be advisable (in my case I am also investing in medical supply companies for Ail!) In all seriousness, you will probably never find a hobby that is so much fun to participate in, and that feels so rewarding. The group of people that you will meet caching are probably some of the greatest bunch that anyone could ever hope to meet in any sport. I can tell you from experience that the group that have replied previously are some of the highest in that group! So once again Welcome to Geocaching and hope to run into you somewhere down the line. Happy Caching! Logger
  24. Hi Number 6! I had the similar problem with my yellow way back when, it would just go off for no reason at all. It began to happen just after I started using Energizer rechargeables in it. Turns out the problem was the battery clips inside the battery compartment. I just moved them out very gently giving the batteries a tighter fit and havent had the problem since. Hope this helps Logger
  25. Well its Wednesday night once again, time for the weekly chat. Hope to see everyone there. I may not be able to attend depending on work schedule but figured I would remind others... Geocaching Chat Link Take Care Happy Caching! Logger
