  1. Nate - you can't log that here at geocaching.com and I'm not aware of any site where logging the find is an option except maybe Waymarking.com. Nontheless, it's a cool find. Check out this link... http://www.wintertime.com/OH/GC/Disney/disneymarks.html#MK
  2. Shrek - I can't tell you much about most of the software others have mentioned but I can tell you that, with GPSTuner, you can't really 'view' the .gpx file but you load them into a database and, just like your GPSr, you then set a waypoint as a 'target' and follow the arrow.... Check out the web site... www.gpstuner.com. There are some good screen shots on there that might clarify what I'm trying to explain. Check out MobiPocket at http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/...ReaderStep1.asp. There's a download for the 'free standard version' that works well with the .prc file included with your .gpx file. GPSTuner is installed only on the PPC and Mobi Pocket Reader is installed on both my iPaq and the PC although I only use the the iPaq version. When looking for a paperless solution myself I was overwhelmed but am happy with the way things are working now. Hope this helps! Chris
  3. Shrek - I have an iPAQ 3850 with a Navman GPS sleeve. The software I use for locating the cache is called GPSTuner. Being a premium member, I get the gpx files which are loaded into GPSTuner. I also have MobiPocketReader installed on the iPAQ for reading the .prc files that come along with the weekly .gpx files. That way, I have everything I need (waypoints, cache description and hints) in one unit. Happy caching! Chris
  4. You might have him press the power button continuously for a few seconds to see if that works. I'm thinking it takes 2-4 seconds for the unit to power up - it's not an 'instant on' kind of power button. Hope this helps.... !
  5. I use a Compaq iPAQ in conjuction with my eTrex Legend when going paperless. I download the datasheets for the desired county from the NGS website and use GSAK (search GC.com for more info) to convert the NGS pages to html files. I then load all of those into my iPAQ which creates a 'web page' for each PID. I then use ExpertGPS to load the waypoints (data sheets) into my Legend. The best thing I've found about benchmark hunting this way is that I can use the 'closest waypoint' feature of my GPSr rather than relying on the few sheets of paper I've chosen to take with me. I have all of the information for the PIDs in my area in web page format which shows everything the NGS data sheet shows (but a bi more readable). For example, I was driving in a nearby town that I'm not really familiar with looking for benchmarks. I had formulated a plan in order to look for the most in a circular route and was driving along. I came to a stop sign and used the 'nearest waypoint' feature of my Legend. What I found was this. Had I not been paperless, I'd have driven right by.

Thanks for GSAK - it's really robust and appears that it will take care of most of my BM hunting needs. I've been looking for a database program where I can keep up with my NGS DBs and log the finds/no finds. I was wondering if there are future plans to add the ability to attach photos to a record. There's no need to upload the photos to a PDA but it would be useful for personal logging and viewing on my PC. Thanks again for the program....
  7. I know this topic has probably been brought up before, but I couldn't come up with a good thread by doing a search so I thought I'd pose my ponderings to the experts in this forum. The reason I ask the NGS logging question is, until this weekend, I had never found a 'missing' benchmark GA1270. This got me to wondering about a couple of things... 1. Should I log it with the NGS so they'll know it's missing? 2. Will the remaining pin be good enough for surveying, etc.? 3. Does the NGS have plans to replace missing disks? I appreciate any insight that might be offered. I haven't found a ton of disks (as is evident by my profile), but the ones I have found have been in really good condition and, in some cases, reset when something such as a bridge, etc. has been changed or built.
  8. Tennessee's DOT Survey Manual can be found here. TN DOT
  9. Lurker here... Like the others of my lurker kin, I have chosen to remain mostly silent for a couple of reasons.... 1. Anything worth discussing at this point has been and a markwell exists.... 2. Have no desire to enter into the 'political arena' that seems to rear its ugly head regularly On the other hand, I've learned tremendous amounts of geo-related info by reading the forums and the cache logs and will continue to do so.... in lurker mode...
  10. E. I found myself reading all of the logs in the local caches - just to have a geocaching related activity to do while at (humppph) work...

Okay, I'm an idiot "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." John Muir Isn't "walking the tracks" illegal there? I believe that SP and UP here in California will arrest you for trespass. Many of their security officers are POST-certified and carry the same status in the eyes of the law as a police officer. OhNoMrBill (Bill Hudson, Gilroy CA) From CSX website... 'Train tracks are private property. 13. Probably around 45-50' high crossing a small creek.... Don't wanna hang around on there too long... "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." John Muir
  14. It seems like most of the BMs around here are along, or close by, RR tracks and count for most of my finds. In most cases, they're easily accessible even if one has to cross a trestle.... Invariably, I always approach from the wrong end.... That white speck on the other side is Snoop513 who wouldn't cross with me. At least one of us had some smarts that day... If the kids are along, McToy trading madness ensues, otherwise I've gotten to the point that I take nothing unless it's something extremely cool - like one of those electronic mosquito repellent thingies... 18. LJ - I also have the bike mount for my Venture and can say that, without a doubt, the GPSr will stay in there. I use mine for mountain biking and have crashed many times and ridden thru some rough terrain with no loosening of the unit. I have the lanyard attached to my GPSr and wrap that around the handlebars 'just in case' and to get it out of the way... Happy pedaling...
  19. This is a reply to an old post but I wanted to give my observations on this 'battery saver' mode error as well. I had this happen once when I had left the GPS (Garmin Venture) stuck in the dash mount in my vehicle during the day. I think I may have even seen an error saying something about 'switching from external power' when there was none. I attributed it to the direct sunlight/heat of the closed car because it (the GPS) was EXTREMELY hot to the touch. After holding it in front of the air conditioning vent for a couple of minutes, the funky messages went away and haven't returned. BTW, I've stopped leaving it in the dash mount during the day when the car is closed and not moving.... so far, no more strange errors other than that pesky 'lost satellite reception' just as I'm closing in on the cache.... Grrrrrrr.....
  20. I would like to see a geocaching club in E. TN but a little closer to the Tri-Cities (Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City). I'm not sure I could form a club, but I sure would be glad to help organize/promote/etc.
  21. My love for geocaching is second only to my love for mountain biking. Hence 'sprocketman' - the 927 is simply my b-day. And, no, I don't sing Elton John songs while riding...
