Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I finally got it working. I actually went through 2 more cables. The one that finally worked was a plug and play from Dynex that I bought at BestBuy.

I did get the converter cable working as a COM port. But it couldn't detect the GPS unit once I plugged it in from there. COM3? Do I need to be connected to/as a COM3? Now that I'm thinking about that I don't think the cable registered as a COM3. Thanks Red90.

I have an etrex legend. Everything was working fine as far as uploading coordinates from the cache pages. I bought a laptop without the serial port. I tried to connect using a converter cable but I couldn't get it to connect to my gps. Are there any known issues to cause this that I can fix? My thoughts so far are... 1. The converter cable didn't work. I did take it back and plan on picking a different one up on the way home from work. 2. The converter cable won't work with the garmin unit? (This is my biggest concern because there would be no fix) 3. There is a problem with the garmin website for downloading the driver. 4. I did read about trying Firefox instead of IE7, I will try that when I get home. Anything else? Thanks for your help. Angie

Just a thought. Maybe the mystery coiner doesn't want a "return" that is why they chose to remain anonymous. Maybe a "Pay it Forward" of some sort would be more appropriate. Other than that, I think it's a great idea.

Another lurker here. I'm not usually a lurker on forums, but I am just new to geocaching so I really don't have anything to add to threads already started. I'm also so new, I don't even know even know what questions to ask. I guarantee once I get my feet wet, I'll be posting with a frenzy. Thanks for the intro thread. I couldn't even find this. HA!
