  1. I wish the people hitting all their old caches with "ignore log - username change" would bother to read this! ..a
  2. I've thought about carrying several of the info sheets you find in caches (and can print from the gc web site when you place a cache) and handing them over if challenged. Never been challenged, though.. ..a
  3. Whatever you do, make sure you get the H version (Garmin).. I was lucky enough to be able to sell my old Cx for close to what I paid for a used HCx - the sensitivity is MASSIVELY improved, and around here, you can't swing a GPSr without hitting a nice, dense tree.. ..a
  4. For averaging, so what ao says although I like to put it down and walk away for a little while (less interfering with the signal). As to compass, if you're doesn't have one, nothing you can do, but if it does, there will be a 'calibrate' option in the menu when you are viewing it. My Vista HCx does, and I calibrate it *every* time I use it. It drifts between uses, no idea why but it takes 5 seconds to correct. ..a
  5. Glad I'm not the only one confused by that.. I went off searching for the term, thinking it was unique to caching! ..a
  6. Marietta. I've been caching a little while but not really active here on the forums before now. I see many familiar names on caches around here, but no sign of them on the forums either.. ..a
  7. .. that doesn't work on Verizon. A large part of the reason Blackberry is successful is that the OS is somewhat closed. The phones can't easily be hacked, for good or bad. So you make your choice when you purchase. I love my BB, but if Verizon supported the iPhone, I would probably switch. As is, I won't switch back to ATT.. ..a
  8. Found a direct link by searching for all references to 'clayjar', thx! I'd looked in the help and FAQ's both here and on geocaching.com.. It rates my planned cache hike as a 3.5, and I walk my dogs there every day.. ..a
  9. I've only a handful of caches to my name, but more than one has required calculating a location from bearing and distance. Just basic GPS stuff, in my opinion. My first cache will be using it.. ..a
  10. What is this 'clayjar' rating? I'm putting together a challenging hike multi, and want to know how to rate appropriately.. .. or just take a stab at it, and let the reviewer correct it? ..a
  11. There's a big difference between picking up a suspicious rock, and tugging on a piece of vegetation or tampering with a bird's nest.. ..a
  12. You are doing exactly what I would expect - marking an object as a cache so it does not have to be tampered with in order to determine whether it is the correct object. Many of the caches shown here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=62421 are designed as carefully as possible to *not* appear to be the correct object. I can see where this thread is heading, however.. ..a
  13. OK, so not everyone approaches this the same way I - and you - do. I can respect that, but things like even touching a bird box out in the woods would seem to be a direct violation of the spirit of this game (birds will often abandon a nest if tampered with) "scorched earth" - lol! ..a
  14. Regarding some of the really clever (and evil) caches I've seen here, and the "strong sense of community and support for the environment".. Relatively new at this, I've always shied away from tampering with anything that could be damaged through repeated attempts to access, or anything that would disturb nature. The last thing I would want is my actions to threaten a cache location. Yet I see bird box caches, fake door locks or security cameras that need to be opened or removed, fake power outlets, fake sprinkler heads, fake bolts that need to be removed from a sign post, even a birds-nest cache! I am in awe of the "cleverness" of some of these hides, but they appear to be directly in conflict with the "strong sense of community and support for the environment".. Am I off base? Are we expected to plod through cache locations pulling on or prying loose everything that could possibly hold a cache? ..a (flame suit on..)
  15. My local reviewer says it's fine to have a virtual stage within the park boundary. I'm basically looking to have people go for a hike thru the woods to gather clues to find the final cache, which will be outside the park. It's a beautiful park, I walk our dogs there every day that it's not raining.. ..a
  16. Friend mentioned it to my wife, she mentioned it to me. Looked it up, tried it, enjoy it! ..a
  17. Huh? It can give me bearing to two decimal places, and distance in any unit I please. How more accurate can you get? (coordinates in DD MM.MMM format are only accurate to ~5' or so anyway..)
  18. For only $15, I'll be putting some of this in the cabinet as well!
  19. Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but google earth will do it just fine too.. Just put in the complete coordinate (DDD MM.MMM format, just like on the cache pages) for each waypoint, then use the ruler to measure the two points - gives distance and bearing, in any unit you like! ..a
  20. In *my personal experience* the only way to get rid of it is to use a product like those I posted above. Nothing else cures it once you get it on the skin (and we've tried every remedy we could find on the internet), including isopropyl alcohol (we have a large bottle in the medicine cabinet) - although this will remove the oils from non-porous surfaces.. Perhaps if you're not sensitive to it, just about anything will remove it. If you react to the oils, however, you need "the good stuff".. ..a
  21. Butterfly Fox - thanks, that is sort of what I had in mind. A puzzle/multi where the first location gave you what you needed to get to the first spot in the park, which then leads you to the next, etc. Palmetto - thx - I was searching for that at the moment! ..a
  22. Edit: wow - I had no idea virtuals were no longer allowed. No problem, I prefer a physical cache as an end point anyway. I want to place a multi that requires visiting a wonderful local park. I know NPS cache's are prohibited (in general), but is that restricted to actual placement of the cache? I plan to either: - end with either clues obtained from the visit (virtual), (see edit, above) or - end with a cache located outside the park (but nearby.) What about the start point? Do I have to locate the start outside of the park as well? Searched here and monitored these discussions but can't find anything that really covers what I want to do. Thx! ..a
