We are planning a trip to the southwest mid April to mid May.
Any advise for hiking with a dog, she's a 75lb 11 month old Chessie, in rattlesnake country would be appreciated.
I have outlined our basic trip in another thread which I started today.
Thanks
We keep our dog on a leash at all times. But a bigger problem for dogs in the SW is the thorns--either they get stuck all in the fur or worse in the pads. They are not thorny bushes, they are either lose or very small things littering the whole area.

Can't say much about scenery, but here are some nice caches in Las Vegas:

I don't know if you'll be able to see this.
It shows a baby rattler, curled up against one of the Rt66 film can caches. It curls up within the same height as the film can! Be sure to look well before you reach for the cache!
-
I posted this in the shout box of the nevadageocaching.com site. More locals may see it. I'm avoiding the area after I saw a baby rattlesnake picture (down on route 66 trail), but nonetheless I will wait for winter again.

Glad they had fun!

Once you get to a cache page, click on "View Larger Map" and it should open an overview map of caches for you to look at.
GC16647 THE SKULL (Sunset Park)
GC2NN71 JAR OF SECRETS (trail along 215) (also close to B&BNV caches on the overview map, caches with "Horizon" in the name)
not sure about the mountain type of caches...
-
I also posted this to FB so perhaps some other cachers may see it and chime in for you.
-
Although not in Henderson, perhaps Sunset Park geocaches could fit the bill for you. There's a small string of caches between Gibson and Stephanie on the trail that runs parallel to the 215. You could post on nevadageocaching.com as well. There are cachers there that live in Henderson. I'm on the West side and not partial to "hike up mountain" type of caches so they may be able to help more.

Is anyone else having this problem? I create a route of our trip south and save the route then create pocket query using the route which works fine but when I try to map it the route is completely wrong. The caches displayed are correct and on route but the blue line is way out. Tried it with a different route and exactly the same problem. Any ideas? Please feel free to move this if it's in the wrong section.
Thanks
S
Yes, I have the same problem (bug?). I'm doing Henderson, NV to Laughlin, NV and the line goes the opposite way to Mt Charleston. This is in the pocket query map view. The line is correct inside the route pocket query setup page. Like you say the caches are correct.

Here's our dog Papi. He was a rescue and absolutely does NOT want to be left alone so we take him everywhere we go or we don't go at all.
He's NO help in geocaching, except for the company and the occasional muggle diversion.
-
Is this happening to anyone else?
Oregon 550t
software 3.40
city navigator micro sd card installed and this map is enabled
The problem happens sometimes
I think it would reproduce if I could catch the right steps/timing of steps, as the problem has occurred quite a number of times now
I think it has something to do with the steps I take while routing to caches
I route to a cache (auto) by hitting green Go!
We start to move but do not follow the route it has just calculated
the unit turns itself off
I route to a cache (auto) by hitting green Go!
Perhaps I start this process while it's "calculating"
I back out of the map, I hit Where to?, I hit recalculate offroad
meanwhile we have started to drive
unit turns itself off
I know it's important to get the reproducible steps, but every time it happens, I'm trying to turn on the unit and get back to the cache we are already trying to drive to
Thanks.

Hey y'all,
Headed out to visit Vegas sometime next month. What are some "must see" and "must do" caches in Vegas, preferably near the strip?
I'm also planning to rent a car for one day -- I'd love to get at least one cache in AZ and CA since I'll be so (relatively) close!
Thanks!
I recently liked:
Penn and Teller
If you haven't done it, then the cache at the drive up wedding chapel.

All of these caches should be archived for breaking geocaching.com rules, right now. In the description for every single cache (which are all the same) they tell the cacher to go to the Little A'LeInn, a local restaurant and gift shop. These break the rule against commercial caches:
"Commercial Caches
Commercial caches will not be published on geocaching.com without prior approval from Groundspeak. A commercial cache is a geocache listing or geocache which is perceived by Groundspeak, Groundspeak's employees, or the Volunteer Geocache Reviewers as having been submitted to geocaching.com with the principal or substantial intent of soliciting customers or generating commercial gain. The geocache is presumed to be commercial if the finder is required to go inside a business, interact with employees, and/or purchase a product or service, or if the cache listing has overtones of advertising, marketing, or promotion.
Additionally, links to businesses, commercial advertisers, charities, political or social agendas, or the inclusion of their associated logos are not permitted on cache descriptions without prior permission from Groundspeak." (www.geocaching.com)
Because of the overtones of advertising and promotion, every single one of these caches are illegal and should be archived. No exceptions.
I think the mention of the Inn is good for survival info. There is NOTHING around, but that Inn. You have no cell coverage, you have cows crossing in front of you (the dead cows along the road and the destroyed truck would suggest it is not a rare event, not to mention it almost happened to us), you have deadly snakes, and badgers around. That Inn would be your nearest spot for a working phone. If you didn't bring any food, that's the only food around once you get on the trail too.
I can see if there were two places and the caches only mentioned one, but the Inn is the ONLY place I saw while on the trail.
I can't speak for the road after the inn, but I didn't see anything past it, but more road and open range.

Thank you very much for these pages. They were very helpful. I had one question.
http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/tips.html
On this page, on the detailed page of SwordsTower, there is a green right pointing arrow at the top left. I accidently held down on this button and it honked at me and turned it into a red square and I couldn't change it back. What is the meaning of this?
thanks,

Hi,
I was considering on buying this for my friend for her birthday.
Does it have a page where it just lists the lat and long coordinates where you are currently at, like:
N 36° 03.702 W 115° 14.621
http://www.rei.com/product/752637
I was searching online and I can't see such a page in the user guide or screen shots posted online.
I have a 60csx and the coords are right on the default page. That's what I'm used to.
thanks,
kris

The whole system seems to be running like pond water. Click-wait five minutes, click again and wait. Not sure what's going on.......
I'm having the same problem. I haven't been able to load a page for at least the last hour (currently 12:58p pacific time).

Sorry to hear that tigerboys. Bummer. I believe that's the feeling I'm trying to avoid with my coin copies.
Regarding "get the icon", I believe I was screwed by the owner of the first coin I retrieved (or there's a bug in way they apply the icons). The owner deleted my retrieved it log since I didn't know what I was doing and put the actual number in my log. I don't see the icon for this coin on my profile. It also screwed up my other lists. I could not then re-do my retrieved it log. All I could do was drop it off even though technically I hadn't retrieved it. Dropping it off did not put the icon in my profile.
So since my profile is already incorrect, I'm finding it hard to get excited about "getting the icon" for anything else I'm coming across--real or copy. The OCD in me I suppose... :>
-
OHHHHHH!!!! I get it now. I was on the travel bug logs page. Thanks!
-
Hmm, that's weird. Even for the coins I've retrieved and dropped off in a cache, the icon I have looks like a travel bug--the bug icon.
Other people are seeing actual little icons on a list???

Hi,
I have just released copies of my first geocoins into caches. I've read some of the threads.
One thing I didn't understand was "get the icon"--what does that mean? I know that the coins come with a little icon on their page, but on all my lists for my profile (I've found two geocoins at least), I don't see a page showing all the icons on one page. So I was confused at what this meant. What am I missing?
Results so far--one person thought the copy was a great idea, one seemed disappointed, but yet retrieved it and took it from the cache it was in, and one that discovered it and left it in the cache, yet said it was a nice coin. That covers quite a spectrum.
I think people seem to cache for different reasons and enjoy different facets more than others so you can't make everyone happy. The "collector" in me (for example, sports cards) absolutely does not allow me to deface my coins in any way and send them out.
Every time I've retrieved a coin (and a TB), I've felt very responsible for it. Trying to find caches that were relatively safe as I could find. If I found a paper coin, I would feel less pressure, but still responsbile for it.
Well, anyway, was just trying to find out what "get the icon" meant?
thanks,
kris

Hi,
I'm also new to these pocket queries.
I have no idea if this will help or not. But I had the same problem. I flipped it to search by zip code instead of from home coordinates and checked the preview list and it found stuff. Then I flipped it back to home coordinates and it found stuff. I have no idea why it started working.
Also make sure your selections do not cancel each other out.

I forgot to add that I closed IE and re-opened, still have the problem.
I have logged out of the geocaching.com website and logged back in, still have the problem.

Hi,
The cache, Prize Lake, is missing from my 30 day quick view list. It is there in my found cache list. Why isn't it showing in my 30 day quick view list?

http://members.cox.net/kmayeda\logs.gif
I'm using IE7 (version 7.0.5730.11). Windows XP Professional.
Here's the log entry itself, I have edited it:

Hmm, this log entry won't go into my list for today, just trying to nudge it on there!
FINALLY!!! The coords were off for us, but the hint was right on.
5/16/08:
Couldn't find it...again!
4/20/08:
Couldn't find it...yet.

No, I don't think so. I don't even use the navigation part of the GPS. I just use it to get the coordinates.

When we left in our rented RV to make the trip up to WA, this cache was still active. Then found out at GC HQ yesterday, that it had been archived! It was a big bummer. I hope bad karma gets heaped upon the person who took the cache.
