  1. One of our caches is relatively near the tracks and though you can get there otherwise, just about everyone has gotten to it by way of tracks. I am a bit skeptical of the 150' rule, or rather that it is a nationwide concept. The tracks run right through our town, and the old railway stration -- you got it -- next to the tracks.. so let's say, 5 feet, is a restaurant. Not to mention a load of other businesses within 100 feet of the tracks on all sides. More than that Patapsco Valley State Park in Md. (which is where our tracks are) basically runs down the tracks/river. An official trail map from the park service will show miles of trails which literally follow the tracks/river. So, at least in Maryland, the State of Maryland isn't doing much to keep people 150' from the tracks. In Sykesville, the river trail (the non-track way to get to our cache) will run down to the river and along the tracks, all paved, and back into town again -- when it is complete. Sorry to hear that people in California are more unreasonable, though they do have a big deficit to take care of... every $2030 counts.
  2. I too find letterboxing different, but equally as enjoyable as geocaching. We're not in to geocaching for the trading: our two year old is equally excited by random things in geocaches as getting a stamp on his hand (and arm, leg, and face). We geocache more than letterbox because there are more caches, and because we can tell where they are -- life surrounds the nap. I really like the compass and hints nature of letterboxing, which can get very sophisticated. Since we didn't know if we'd like letterboxing, we just picked up a stamp pad and small stamp at a local store and use that.
  3. Oy! Well, uh, I'd like to claim blindness, but I've had lasik. So, I'll just claim dumbness. thanks! quote:Originally posted by Team DEMP:Can't we do that already. On each cache page after the cache description and before the logged visits is: Find... ...other caches hidden or found by this user ...nearby caches of this type ...all nearby caches ...all nearby placenames ...all nearby benchmarks Or did I misunderstand your question?
  4. I'm sure I'm a long way from being the first to request this, but I couldn't find anything in a quick search... I would really like a button "Find Nearby Caches" to click from any cache page. When I find a cache of interest, I'd really like to immediately see the other caches in the area... this would be a great plus for us. thanks.
  5. We took the neighbor girls out today, making for four small kids hunting for boxes, when suddenly we lost all satellites. We've been in some pretty thick woods with our sportrak and never had any problems with reception. The only thing we could think was that we were in a depression and somehow the satelites weren't seeing us, which seems a bit odd. Even sitting in the middle of a field for 20 minutes, I got not a single satellite. My husband finally took the receiver up and well out of the depression, stood around for quite awhile and got a connection. We were eventually able to get it stable and brought it back down into the woods without issue. As you can imagine, not so fun with little kids. Any thoughts?

  7. Anyone else had a delayed response from them? They are clear to indicate that you will hear from them within 24 hours. It's been 3-4 days since I applied, and sent in my photo, and I haven't heard anything. Nor did they respond to a follow up email asking about the status. Perhaps they've been flooded by requests, but then I'd expect the site to update.
  8. I noticed on the guidelines for caches that they could not be placed on grounds run by the national park service. I was wondering if anyone knew the reasoning/history behind this. Not near railway stations is clear; not in national parks, not so clear. thanks!
